June to September 2014


WelcomeWelcome to the latest guide to What’s On at the Museum of Oxford, Gallery and Old Museum.

The Old Museum will showcase another exciting season of arts and heritage events, including Pre-Ashmolean Live Friday Boardgame Remix parties and Oxford Open Doors.

Explore Oxford continues to play host to brilliant family events, from ‘Amazing Archaeology’ to ‘Tudor Tunes’. Meanwhile, The Gallery will be exhibiting work from some of Oxford’s top artists and community groups and our popular Heritage Tours will explore the Town Hall’s hidden corners and stories.

We’re also delighted to be taking part in Oxford’s favourite summer events including the Lord Mayor’s Celebration, Mela and Alice’s Day with free talks, workshops and family activities.

We look forward to seeing you this summer in our three venues in Oxford’s historic Town Hall.


Regular EventsExplore OxfordVisit the Museum of Oxford’s interactive galleries located in the Town Hall opposite reception. This permanent exhibition tells visitors the fascinating story of Oxford and its people in two very different spaces.

Oxford Uncovered Family Trail Take a different look at the ‘Explore Oxford’ Galleries, discover some amazing artefacts and write a letter to the past. Suitable for all the family to do together. 50p from the Museum Gift Shop. Available 10am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday.

Community WorkshopsThe Museum of Oxford offers lots of beginners’ workshops for adults including Searchers, Creative Writing and Art For All. All workshops take place in the Heritage Learning Centre on weekdays during term time (see monthly listings for further details). They are aimed at beginners but all abilities are very welcome. Please contact Antonia Harland-Lang ([email protected]) to be added to the programme mailing list or just drop into a session.

Heritage Tours: Town HallJoin the Museum of Oxford as we take you on a tour around Oxford’s magnificent Town Hall.

Our Heritage Tours run twice a month so please see monthly listings for further details. We also offer bespoke tours for groups to suit your schedule, please email [email protected] or telephone 01865 252417 with your enquiry.

Gallery CorridorA new local artist exhibits their work in the Gallery Corridor every month so there is always something new and interesting to see. Check our listings for further details.

7 June – 6 September Alice 3.0: An Alternative Wonderland, FREE, Gallery and Gallery CorridorCan you imagine a girl falling down a hole and meeting a rabbit, a mad hatter, a bloodthirsty Queen of Hearts and a hookah-smoking caterpillar? Lewis Carroll could.

Now imagine that same girl 150 years on. The Alice 3.0: an Alternative Wonderland exhibition does just that.

From the abstract to the cartoon-like, from the intricate to the minimalist, 25 UK and international artists and children from Oxford High Junior School, Rose Hill Primary School and the Oxford Deaf Children’s Society present us with a unigue reworking of Carroll’s classic tale.

Welcome to the 21st century Wonderland.


7 JuneTuner of Oxford – A Talk by Jon Whitely, £3, 3pm–4.30pm, Council ChamberJon Whitely, honorary curator of the Ashmolean’s Western Art department, takes us on an exploration of Turner of Oxford and the artworks which now adorn the Council Chamber corridor in the Town Hall. 14 June Oxford Mela (Out & About) Find the Museum of Oxford’s activity stall out and about at Oxford’s 5th annual summer Mela in East Oxford. There will be Bollywood, Fusion and Bhangra dancing, live bands, games and activities for children and lots more entertainment. See www.oxfordhindutemple.org for further details and venue.

15 JuneLord Mayor’s Celebration, 12noon–5pm, FREE, Gloucester Green Join the new Lord Mayor of Oxford to celebrate all things Oxford this summer. Enjoy live music presented by BBC Introducing and Oxford Contemporary Music, a village of tasty local food stalls and free activities to keep all the family entertained – with cycle powered bubble machines, a family craft corner and stories around the straw bale circle. The Lord Mayor’s Celebration reflects Oxford’s diverse communities and global connections and will form part of this year’s Low Carbon Oxford Week.

26 July Amazing Archaeology Family Day, 10.30am–3.30pm, FREE, Heritage Learning CentreFun family archaeology activities in conjunction with the Council for British Archaeology’s Festival of Archaeology. Become an archaeologist for the day and find out more about what it really means to be one. Take part in a mini indoor dig discovering, examining and recording artefacts. Look at objects from the past and use your detective skills to find clues to piece together their stories.
