HuntEx – Voorspel tot die jagseisoen

HuntEx – The curtain raiser

The support that all firearm enthusiasts, sport shooters and hunters showed for the industry by attending HuntEx this year has signalled a new era for the South African hunting and firearms industry. 45 521 visitors attended this year’s show, which equated to 5 300 more visitors than last year and gave the industry a fantastic platform to exhibit their products and place the latest technology in the hands of all enthusiasts.

The HuntEx show has become the curtain raiser to the hunting season and Adriaan Woudstra and his team have successfully raised the level of excitement by enlisting radio stations like Groot FM and giving away great hampers on air and fantastic prizes via the HuntEx Lottery.

Wildland also had a stand at HuntEx this year and I would like to thank everyone who popped in to greet us and wish us well. I was truly humbled by all your words of encouragement and praise and we will continue to strive to bring you a publication that both entertains and educates you.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Café Enrista who made available a fantastic cup of coffee free of charge to all visitors at the show; I am sure it was greatly appreciated by all.

Adriaan Woudstra and his team deserve a round of applause from all of us for putting on a show that has put South Africa on the map and moved us into a league that can start competing with shows such as IWA and the Shot Show in Las Vegas.

In this month’s edition we have enclosed a free coffee sample from Koffiehuis. It is nice to see a

uniquely South African brand not being afraid to associate itself with the hunting industry and I call upon all of you to please support them.

The hunting season is in full swing and for all of you who have saved and worked hard to be able to participate in this year’s season I hope you enjoy every facet of the hunt and I wish you all the best of luck. Please take the time after your hunting trip to sit behind your laptop and record your experiences and send them through to us as we are always looking for exciting hunting stories to publish.

For those of you who have opted to sit out this season due to spiralling hunting costs please do not loose heart as we have all been there at some stage of our hunting careers and I am of the opinion that the bubble will burst and game prices will revert back to some level of affordability in the not too distant future.

With the new Leica Magnus 1.8–12x50 riflescopes, Leica Camera AG, Wetzlar, presents further new models in the successful Magnus line of riflescopes with the "Made in Germany" quality seal. A total of eight different versions of the Leica Magnus 1.8–12x50 will be available from March 2015.The new models expand the range that already includes the Leica Magnus 1-6.3x24, the Leica Magnus 1.5-10x42 and the Leica Magnus 2.4-16x56.

In the twilight hours and darkness, the large front lens diameter of 50 mm and a high transmission value of 92% ensure maximum performance and identification of details up to the last minutes of shooting light. The wide zoom range extends from 1.8x to 12x magnification. This maximises the versatility of the scope and makes it just as ideal for short hunts and long-distance shots. As Marcus Zeidler, product manager at Leica Camera

AG, explains, "Thanks to our Power-Zoom, we cover the entire spectrum of hunting needs and offer a distinct advantage over riflescopes with zoom ranges of only 4x and 5x."

With regard to its technical specifications, the Leica Magnus 1.8-12x50 is positioned between the Leica Magnus 1.5-10x42 and the Leica Magnus 2.4-16x56. In comparison with the Leica Magnus models with a 42 mm front lens, the new riflescope lets in around 40% more light. The new model is therefore ideal for hunting at night and in the twilight hours and simultaneously offers considerably more compact dimensions and is more lightweight than the Magnus 2.4-16x56.

''Here, we have brought together the best properties from two riflescopes. With the new Leica Magnus 1.8-12x50, we now offer a riflescope that may be considered

to be a reference product, particularly in European hunting circles. It is the perfect riflescope for customers who appreciate the versatility of the 42 mm Leica Magnus and simultaneously need a larger-diameter front lens, says Cyril Thomas, director of the Sport Optics business unit. ‘With the Leica Magnus 1.8-12x50, our experts in the technical development department have developed a riflescope that simultaneously offers hunters maximum versatility and maximum benefit.''

The Leica Magnus 1.8–12x50 will be available from March 2015 in eight different versions.
