OPEN HOUSE Staff and students of William of Orange Christian School cordially invite all parents and
grandparents to our annual Open House, January 25th from 9am - 12:05pm. The morning
will begin in the school gym with an assembly, including our annual spelling bee, followed
by refreshments in the library and mingling with students. After recess we will hold our
annual grade 6/7 badminton finals in the gym. Regular classes will then resume with the
opportunity for guests to wander through quietly and observe. We look forward to seeing
many of you on the 25th!
To cause as little disruption as possible to the learning and instruction, babysitting will be provided for all
babies and preschoolers in the Cloverdale church.
Grade 4/5 students are requested to bring baking for the Open House. Please bring the baking to the
gym kitchen in the morning before school begins.
SICKNESS Lately a significant number of students have succumbed to the flu, cold or the "winter vomiting
bug." For colds and flu, typically children are contagious on the day before symptoms manifest,
and about 5 to 7 days afterwards. Children don't need to stay home for the full period they are
contagious. However, if your child is sick, please consider not only their needs, but also whether
they are likely to pass on the bug to their school mates, especially with frequent coughing.
KINDERGARTEN FRIDAYS
A reminder that starting on February 3rd, Kindergarten students will be attending school on Fridays as
well as their regular Monday and Wednesday Kindergarten days.
ASSEMBLY CANCELLED Please note: The gr 6/7 assembly, scheduled for Feb 15th, has been cancelled for a variety of reasons.
Please remove it from your school calendar.

FSA’s
During the coming weeks, the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) will again be conducted at schools
across the province. The FSA is an annual province-wide assessment of our province’s students'
academic skills in grades 4 and 7, and provides a snapshot of how well BC students are learning
foundation skills in Reading Comprehension, Writing, and Numeracy. While statistically it may be
questionable to read too much into results for students in a particular (small) school, over time results
do give indicators of trends and overall strengths and weaknesses of an educational program. Not only
can the testing experience be a learning opportunity for students, but the tests also offer parents an
independent assessment of your child’s skills. Consequently, we’re happy to participate.
SPLITZ/TAEKWONDO/CURLING
As some of you have probably already heard, Splitz is no longer offering school fieldtrips. The staff has
been considering other options to replace the Splitz fieldtrips. Thanks to a parent’s suggestion, we have
scheduled Taekwondo classes for the grades K-5 students. Instructors from Chang’s Taekwondo will be
coming to our school on Wednesday afternoons, February 1st, 8th, & 15th, and providing each
division with a 45-minute instruction session in the school gym.
The grade 6/7 students will continue the tradition of curling lessons. They will be doing so on
February 20th, 27th, & March 6th at the Cloverdale Curling Rink. Further details and a permission
slip will be sent home at a later date.

PROBLEM OF THE WEEK:
Time for another logic problem:
Can You Compete?
Gregory, Adam and Paul are athletes who competed in the downhill skiing
event in the Winter Olympics. Gregory, Adam and Paul each finished in first, second or
third. There were no ties.
Each athlete is also from a different country. One is from Canada, one is from
France and one is from Japan.
Using the following clues, determine who placed first, second and third, and for
which country each athlete was competing.
1. Gregory was faster than Adam.
2. Gregory is not Canadian, and he did not finish in second place.
3. The Japanese athlete was faster than the French athlete.
4. Adam is not Japanese and he did not finish in third place.
5. The Canadian athlete was faster than the French athlete.

prepared to discuss the topic with your child as needed.

ART (LML) Beyond stickmen … more sculpture … Mr Wire Man
SCIENCE (BV) Chemistry – chemical and physical changes
S. STUDIES (KV) Continue with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a document that is
both a blessing and a curse for Canada. We will tie this into the Marooned unit and
come up with our own charter.

NOTE:
There is a basketball tournament for grade 6/7 with a few small Christian schools taking place at
Cornerstone Christian in Abbotsford (not the Lynden school) on February 17. We would like to have two
teams from W of O and therefore would need to have a parent/older teen coach the second team. If we
have a second coach we can have two teams. If not, well,....
