I don’t know about you…

but after some of these hot and hazy days of summer,

I am just about ready for the cooler, crisp days of the fall!

And what a wonderful time fall is. For the fall brings the return to age-old

routines and new opportunities. Many churches and organizations launch new

programs. The return to more regular work schedules means many evaluate

what is good and meaningful in their lives, and what they hope to newly

commit to as the season changes.

Below (and enclosed) are a few opportunities for you to take into consideration as you begin to think about the

changes that fall often brings! Enjoy also the celebration of our ministries and activities this summer. Peace.

2016 Appalachia Service Project Team

July 16th-23rd

Thank you. Two simple words which do not wholly express our thanks and

appreciation for your support of the volunteers who you, as a congregation, sent to

Blountville TN July 16-23. Our 20 volunteers worked in 3 smaller groups at two

different houses in the surrounding Appalachian Mountains of Sullivan County,

Tennessee. Our two homeowners were a single woman, working daily who we only

saw at the end of the week when our work was completed, and a single man who was

home daily when not at doctor appointments. Our first homeowner was

appreciative of all we accomplished and was very moved that we cared enough to

beautifully repair a stranger's home. Our second homeowner was not so moved by the

amount or quality/ quantity of our work as much as he was affected by our honest, caring, accepting and genuine

friendship offered to him, a total stranger. He said, "it had been a long time since I met good people".

Some of our volunteers may go on this trip for the opportunity to give back, to be in charge, to work hard, to learn

about something new or different, to help others, to get away and do something that gives their life meaning, or

simply they enjoy carpentry challenges. But sometimes, I wonder if we volunteers go on this ASP trip because "we

could not would not" ( Dr. Seuss) miss this event. The mission to "do" is a "pull" so strong that God speaks to us in

this tangible real way that we feel, but not necessarily recognize, as God's voice calling us to His service.

I am so proud of our 20-something young adults who are now mentoring teens who have joined our group. I saw

this mentoring in action, along with some group comradery, that encouraged those on the trip to be themselves, have

faith in their fellow volunteers, and fostered some amazing experiences that the teens (and adult newcomers) can't

help but share with others back home! I expect they cannot and will not miss WGUMC’s ASP 2017!

cant impact on the many it serves as well as those who go as part of the teams. Pictured

WGUMC Family Picnic & Friendship Meal Event Held Sunday, June 26, 2016, 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM

At Carson Simpson Farm (Graff Pavilion)

The church held its annual church-wide picnic on June 26th at Carson

Simpson Farm. The morning started off with a smaller group of folks setting up for

the day, both the picnic area as well as the worship area under the shade of the oak

tree. God bless the early-birds for their willingness to help out on this way. Other people began to gather,

bringing their food offerings to share as we readied ourselves for the morning worship service.

Worship was inspirationally led by Pastor Lorelei with special assistance from her children, Will & Emma, as well as

our own musician Rich Carley on the guitar. There was songs, prayers, scripture readings, an offering,

inspired message words, fresh air, a nice breeze, shade, fellowship, and the glory of God's world. After worship, it was

time to ready ourselves for what Methodists do quite often and that is to eat! The grillers started preparing the

delicious entrees (hamburgers and tube steaks), while all

the other pot-luck food was made ready on the serving

tables. We had baked beans, various salads, vegetables,

lasagna, sauerkraut, chips, and other delicious offerings. All

of this followed by the desserts, the best part of the meal!

It was a day full of sunshine, friends, fellowship, games,

outdoor air, and just plain fun! A day enjoyed by all who

could join us. See you there next year!

ANN (Bulmer) NEWBERRY (88 years) was born on March 18, 1928 in Atlantic City,

N.J. in the back room of a luncheonette.

While growing up, she and her younger sister, Barbara (Bulmer) Lamb spent a great deal of time on the Boardwalk at

Steel Pier, attending many events, including the Miss America Pageant. In 1939, Ann joined the Methodist Church in

Atlantic City. During her school years at Atlantic City Jr. High School (7th grade), she recalls her gym class being

held on the beach (weather permitting).

In 1940, her family moved to Philadelphia and her church membership letter was transferred to St. Luke’s Church at

Broad and Erie in Philadelphia. Ann graduated from Simon Gratz High School in 1946. She played clarinet in the

band while in high school and received an award at graduation for Best Musician. She wrote an essay “Extending

Friendship and Cooperation” which was read at her commencement exercises.

In 1947, Ann married William Newberry and they built their first home where she presently resides: 229 Brook Street,

Willow Grove. She and Bill have three children: William, Barbara, and Linda. They began attending Willow Grove

United Methodist Church in 1950 and Ann transferred her membership from St. Luke’s to Willow Grove UMC and

became active, along with all of their children. She and Bill have seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Over the years, Ann was active in many church activities and served on committees:

Leadership/Coordinator of 3rd and 4th grade children’s Sunday School classes Many years on the Finance Committee Coordinator of the Sunday Counting Teams Ann’s employment over the years included working at Burpee Seed Company, Warminster, and the former Grove Pharmacy in Willow Grove.

COMMITTEE AND MINISTRY NEWS AND NOTES

DOERS GROUP (By Blanche Erwin): The Doers will meet on Thursday, September 8 at 11:00am in the church

lounge. Devotions and a business meeting will be held followed by lunch and Bingo. Bring a sandwich or salad for

lunch. Beverage and dessert will be provided. The Doers meet on the second Thursday of each month. Visitors and

new members age 55 and older are always welcome. Please join us for fun and fellowship.

HOSPITALITY MINISTRY (By Marilu Skilton):

We will resume the Coffee Cart on September 11th at 10:00 am. Star t the church fall schedule by

joining other members of the church to share any news from the summer, or plans for the coming year.

A host-hostess sign up sheet will be in the narthex late in August.

FOOD MINISTRY (By Laura Daugherty and Kathy Harrod): On July 17th, we gathered in the Fellowship Hall to

enjoy summer and celebrate our country. There will be no Friendship Meal in August, but we will start again

September 18. All are welcome. Should we experience bad weather on any of these dates, cancellation will be

announced on KYW Newsradio and on the website CBSphilly.com.

We continue to have visitors from the various religious institutions in our area as they work toward providing a meal

for those who are food insecure. We recently received word that with the confidence and information that we have

provided two (2) area churches—Glenside UCC and Willow Grove Baptist—will begin new community meals

programs in August and September. We provide flyers on our 2nd floor bulletin board and a table in Fellowship Hall,

during our monthly meals, in order to spread the word that these meals are available.

Dates to remember for the 2016–2017 are:

September 18, October 16, November 20, December 18,

January 15, February 19, March 19, April 23 (Easter is

April 16), May 21, June date of church picnic and July 16.

Your donations of luscious food, love offerings, prayers

and your presence are what keep this ministry running.

We are a mission of the entire church body. Your

contributions are very much appreciated.

Our goal is to be of service to our neighbors. If you want

to have a positive effect on someone’s life, do something

rewarding, and also have fun, come and join our amazing,

talented, loving, fun crew! Other programs sponsored by

the Food Committee include Breakfast in a Bag (available

at the end of the Friendship Meal), Brown Bag Lunches

(distributed by the office staff), and the Friendship Freezer

(emergency meals for anyone who needs them.)

FINANCE COMMITTEE (By Dave Kistner): Mid-Year Finance Summary for WGUMC - The Finance Committee

would like to update the congregation on our mid-year financial status. Our total income through June 30 was

$122,777 while our total expenses were $128,807, resulting in a year to date General Fund deficit of $6,030.

Our income for the first half of 2016 was significantly boosted by the remainder of the Avery bequest ($12,595) and

the sale of the church van ($8,000). Please keep in mind that these 2 items are one-time events which we can’t count

on for the remainder of 2016 to meet our expenses. The Committee looks forward to a Stewardship Campaign planned

for this October that will allow us to better plan for 2017. The Committee thanks the congregation and asks for your

continued support.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN (By Blanche Erwin): The Susanna Circle will meet on third Monday of each month at 10:30am in the church lounge. Our first meeting for the fall will be Monday, September 19.

Reserve the Date. The women of our congregation are invited to the Supplee Presbyterian Church Ecumenical

Luncheon, Wednesday, October 12 at noon. Neill Har tley will present the program of his visit to “Sleepy

Hollow”. The information for luncheon reservations will be in the church bulletin in September.

Save Shoe Boxes for Operation Christmas Child - We need empty shoe boxes to pack the gifts. Shoe boxes are filled

with small gifts to bring joy and hope to children living in countries (including the United States) wracked with war,

poverty, and disaster. Shoe boxes can be left in Room 201.

TRUSTEE COMMITTEE (By John McCarthy and Kim Hunt): The Trustees have been busy at work this summer.

A major part of our time has been spent on preparing, moving, and relocating the Honeyland and Circle of Friends

childcare rooms, as described in the last edition of Fellowship News. In addition, other ongoing maintenance and

necessary repairs have been handled.

One significant "gift" and "moment of grace" was the complete donation, of approximately $1,400, of electrical parts

and labor to repair the organ. This donation was most graciously received, and we give thanks that we have been able

to continue using the organ, week-in and week-out, without even noticing how much repair work was necessary.

Thanks be to God for such generosity!

Other items that the Trustees have been working on include:

1.) Termite remediation in the Lounge (approx. $900)

2.) Toilets on 2nd and 3rd floors, and preliminary boiler repair (approx. $2000)

3.) Air Conditioner in Lounge has been repaired (approx. $750)

4.) Hallways on 2nd and 3rd floor and floors in rooms 204-206 and 304-306 have been stripped, sealed and waxed

5.) The carpets throughout all of the 1st and 2nd floor hallways have been professionally steam-cleaned (~ $400)

6.) Rooms 204-206 have been painted

7.) Window air-conditioner in room 206 has been replaced

8.) Circle of Friends has been relocated to rooms 304-306 and Honeyland has been relocated from 306 to 204-206

9.) Organ electrical issues have been repaired by gracious electrical contractor (GIFT!)

10.) The sale of the church van to Lehman UMC was completed

The Trustees are looking for additional members to serve in the upcoming year. Persons interested in offering their

assistance and expertise should contact Pastor Lorelei or John McCarthy.

MUSIC WORSHIP AND ARTS (By Gayle Wieand): “Summertime … and the living is easy.” So wrote Gershwin

in the first American opera, Porgy and Bess. For myself, I would edit that to “Summertime, and the living is …..

interesting.”

We hope you have found this summer’s music ministry to be interesting. At

WGUMC, the choir takes off for the summer. Kathy, our organist, and our

Pastors say that they miss the choir’s presence and musical leadership in the

Chancel. Choir members say that it’s fun to sit with the congregation where it

is much, much cooler!

Our musical offerings of praise are as varied as always, and we thank the

following choir members, WGUMC members and our friends for providing

the summer music ministry: Niasha Gwin (Youth), Linda Knauss, Diane

Dilks, Kenneth York, Barbara Staley, Chuck Staley, Dave Kistner, Maeve

Carmody (Youth), John Carmody (Youth), John Ekey, Rich Carley and

Marion Demcisak. And our flutist, Courtney Petrunis.

The Choir will return to the chancel on September 11th. Stay tuned for fir st rehearsal announcement.

Interim Custodian: The Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce the interim hiring of Genevieve

Montante to handle certain cleaning and organizing portions of the part time Custodial Position. Genevieve brings a

lifelong knowledge of WGUMC and its ministries, as well as a wonderful passion and problem solving spirit to the

position. Please welcome Genevieve, as SPRC, Chuck Staley, and Shirley Liddle continue to work to fill this vital

position and search for a good long-term and permanent hire. Members are also reminded to use the yellow Trustees'

Maintenance Repair slips, found on the bulletin board, to alert the Church Office to areas of concern, or in need of

attention.

Church Van Sold! The Trustees are pleased to announce on Wednesday, June 29, the sale of the church van to

Lehman Memorial UMC was completed, for a total donation of $8,000 to WGUMC. We are grateful to the

Cunningham Family and their friends for the donation of this van to the ministry of WGUMC for over 10 years, and

the ways it assisted former youth groups and many ASP trips. While our WGUMC ministry has been unable to make

regular use of the van most recently, we feel the sale of the van to Lehman Memorial UMC deeply honors the spirit of

this gift by the Cunninghams as it will continue in service to many youth and young adults through Lehman. The funds

from the sale of the church van will be used to assist in the general operating budget of the church, including

significant ongoing building maintenance work by the Trustees.

us. One Sunday a month we enjoy a “Hymn Sing” as our

hymns each have a message. All are warmly welcomed!

CALLING ALL FRIENDS AND FAMILY!

FAMILY JAMBOREE - We have our Family Jamboree over Labor Day Weekend,

Saturday, Sept 3rd (check-in begins at 10am) to Monday, Sept 5th (check-out begins at

2:30pm). This is a wonderful time for families to spend time together, to meet other

families who have a love for Innabah, and just to spend a few moments relaxing and

enjoying being disconnected from the world for a few days before the craziness of the

school year really gets into full swing. There are plenty of different lodging opportunities

available from rooms in Bethany Lodge, to Covenant or Goodwin Lodge, to cabins, to the

Outpost, or your own campers/tents. We will be getting more information posted about this

on our website within the next week or so, and this information will include prices. Registration for this event is

available online. You can also call the office for more information and/or to get your family reserved.

friends who are in need of special prayers due to illness, pain, loss,

tragedies, or other needs. We have a group of approximately 5

chains consisting of 3 names each. During the past year, we have

lost some of our members and are looking for new persons to fill the

chain. Are you willing to PRAY for those in need and be a part

of the PRAYER CHAIN? Please consider joining with us in this

important ministry.

If you are interested in joining the Prayer Chain or have questions, please call the church office or Blanche Erwin at

215-672-3675.

Also, please call the church office if you are in need of special prayer. Following your call, the prayer chain will be

put in action. The first name on each of the chain groups will call the next name in line and so forth. The Prayer

Chain is completed.

Our lives today center around the quick flashes of news that travel at the flick of a button

on computers and cell phones. This amazing technology has increased awareness of the

different cultures, values, and mores of many countries. We all have one thing in com-

mon: that is the importance of promoting respect and acceptance of one another. This is

easier said than done due to the various levels of maturity, family values and cultural

traditions.

Mental illness is still an ongoing stigma for our society. Many do not accept it as a disease process that affects all cul-

tures and families. The causes can be genetic, chemical, social and environmental. Nursing provides a way to build

awareness and educate individuals in how to approach, guide and refer families to seek help. Our legislative laws

were redirected in the 1960’s so many mentally ill individuals were discharged from hospitals with no follow-up sup-

portive measures. As a result, many have become homeless, and currently half the prison population is mentally ill.

Parish nurses see a lot of these clients in the center city areas. The legislative laws need updating to insure ongoing

treatment to help a person become stable and be guided to a better quality of life. The judicial and medical professions

need to work together to better evaluate competency and treatment. The end result would improve the life of the indi-

vidual and the wellbeing of the family.

Asbury UMC, and is a clinical instructor for crisis assessment and techniques at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown.

What Can Churches Do to Foster a Sense of Belonging for Those with Mental Illness?

(A Review by Sharon Hachtman, RN & Council Steering Comm. Member)

One of the best articles I’ve read recently on mental illness centers around the need for churches to take on the stigma

of mental illness through education and invitation. Dr. Michael Tanner writes that churches must begin by promoting

understanding. He reminds us that there is probably no family, church or community that is not affected by mental

illness, and yet “most churches go about their business oblivious to mental

illness and to the alienation and suffering….on their doorstep and in their

pews” (pg. 45). He gives some tips for every congregation to follow:

1. Pray for the “will to embrace” all

2. Educate clergy, staff, lay leaders and members

3. Regard people for who they are and whose they are, not for illness

they have or for disadvantage that illness has worked in their lives.

4. Invite and encourage full participation of people with mental illness in

church life and work

5. Enjoy friendship and fellowship with people who, among the many

other qualities of their lives, have a mental illness. Be transformed!
