A  note  from  the  Honorary  ZaCSA  President

The  Silent  Auction  for  the  East  Meets  West  Christmas  Tree  netted  $1200,  when  the  final  bid  and  donations

were  combined.  The  money  will  be  delivered  to  the  town  of  Ishinomaki  on  Friday  January  18,  2013.  I  would  like  to  invite  ZaCSA  members  to  continue  donating  funds  for  the  city  at  East  Meets  West  during  regular  shop  hours,  until  Thursday  January  17,  2013.

With  the  conclusion  of  the  Silent  Auction;  the  Christmas  Celebration  with  our  Friendship  Groups;  and  looking  forward  to  the  January  Luncheon  featuring  and  supporting  the  at-‐home  businesses  in  our  community,  I  continue  to  serve  ZaCSA  as  a  proud  member  who  is  grateful  for  every  ZaCSA  member  and  the  support  they  provide  each  other  and  our  Camp  Zama  Community.

The  newest  evolution  in  ZaCSA  group  activities  is  starting  under  the  coordination  of  Sylwia  Carter,  a  ZaCSA  members  who  enjoys  knitting.  Whether  learning  a  new  skill  or  sharing  an  old  passion,  the  fellowship  in  these  shared  interest  groups  knit  together  our  community.  Like  the  Piece  Makers,  who  typically  contribute  a  quilt  to  the  Basket  Auction  and  created  gift  bags  for  East  Meets  West  to  sale  this  season,  these  groups  have  the  creativity  and  power  to  provide  many  kinds  of  opportunities  for  our  community.  I  can't  wait  to  see  what  this  group  unravels.  More  information  can  be  found  on  page  10  of  the  Wind  Chimes.

My  final  entry  this  month  is  all  business.  Coordinating  the  ZaCSA  events  requires  the  time  of  volunteers  and  the  staff  of  the  facility  hosting  our  event.  Typically,  The  Camp  Zama  Community  Club  is  our  venue  and  planning  with  them  means  they  need  to  know  the  number  of  people  attending  and  what  they  will  be  eating  one  week  in  advance.  Deadlines  to  purchase  tickets  for  each  month's  event  can  be  found  in  the  Wind  Chimes  and  on  the  ZaCSA  Facebook  site.  Please  purchase  your  tickets  by  the  posted  event  deadline.

I  hope  2013  is  your  best  year  yet!

The  Wind  Chimes                       January  2013

A  note  from  the  ZaCSA  President

What  can  you  do  to  make  a  difference?    The  answer  is  so  simple.    REALLY!    Find  your  passion…find  others  who  share  your  views,

convince  one  person  to  share  your  dream,  and  EXECUTE.    I  often  hear  from  others  that,  “I  would  love  to  help,  but  I  just  can’t  find  the  time  right  now”  or  “I  just  do  not  know  where  I  fit.”    Well,  make  it  your  mission  to  find  the  time,  FIT,  and  make  a  difference  in  not  only  your  life,  but  in  the  lives  of  others  who  could  use  your  personal  expertise.

Those  who  know  me  best  know  that  I  am  the  consummate  organizer.    While  I  have  evolved  into  a  Program  Manager  by  trade,  I  am  a  planner  of  all  things  that  I  encounter.  My  job,  volunteer  endeavors,  my  poor  children,  and  yes…even  my  husband,  can  attest  to  being  “scheduled  and  coordinated”  to  the  point  of  ad  nauseum.    Those  with  no  time  find  more  time  where  there  is  no  time.  I  would  like  to  especially  thank  three  “ZaCSA  special  chairs”  for  their  unique  passion  and  for  stepping  up  to  take  on  the  challenges  and  tackling  three  time  consuming  events  for  this  ZaCSA  year:

1. Crystal  Ryan  –  ZaCSA  &  Friendship  Groups     Christmas  Party:  December  19,  2012  2. Darlene  Truesdell  –  Tri  Service  Luncheon:   February    26,  2013  3. Jill  Russell  –  Basket  Auction:       March  16,  2013

Crystal  has  poured  her  heart  and  soul  into  making  her  event  unique  and  special  for  both  our  Japanese  friendship  groups  and  our  organization’s  membership.    “Christmas”  for  each  ZaCSA  year  should  be  a  new  and  different  experience.  Crystal,  you  have  raised  the  bar  and  given  us  a  distinctive  “Tour  of  Christmas”  this  year.    Darlene,  I  so  hope  to  be  able  to  fit  into  my  “Little  Black  Dress”  and  represent  Zama’s  luncheon  theme  with  style!  And  to  Jill,  it  will  be  difficult  to  exceed  your  own  footprint,  but  we  look  forward  to  seeing  what  you  and  your  team  has  in  store  for  the  Zama  community  as  you  raise  the  bar  for  ZaCSA’s  2013  Basket  Auction  Scholarship  financial  fundraiser  to  new  heights.

Can  these  exceptional  ladies  use  your  help  with  upcoming  events…SURE  THEY  CAN!    The  time  for  you  to  find  your  passion  and  make  a  difference  is  now.    If  you  are  still  not  sure  where  you  can  best  utilize  your  talents?    Ask  me  or  our  President,  Beth  van  Kan  -‐  -‐  we  always  have  ideas.

Thank  you  ZaCSA  membership  for  a  great  2012!

An obon is 'a tray' to bring dishes or beverages from kitchen to table, typically made of wood or metal.

Obon come in many sizes; to carry individual tea cups and an accompanying snack or to larger obon to serve many people.

The obon featured in this photo appears to be made specifically for the retirement party of a Japanese soldier. The kanji on the helmet mean "Bravery" and "Courage", while a sentiment in hiragana conveys thanks for a job well done and wishes the soldier more peaceful days and a rest that is well deserved.
