Window on Windsor Hills
Exciting news for our friends who are not on-line!
Now you can simply dial a local phone number
302-6964
and listen to the most recent sermon and announcements,
to keep you connected to your church.
Tell us if you have friends who are not online, who are missing their church!
Feel free to share the number yourself, as well.
Stay Connected
As these difficult times continue, there are ways for us to stay connected to Windsor Hills
UMC life. See page 2 for further information about delaying in-person worship. Soon, small
groups can begin meeting with restrictions (also see page 2).
You can write an encouraging note to someone in the congregation, or make at least one
phone call a day to check in on a church member.
We are sending Children’s Worship Bulletins to parents with children. Encourage your
children to use them...and to participate in on-line worship, which includes a children’s
time.
Join in Wednesday morning Bible Study, and Wednesday Mornings Matter, through Zoom.
Go to our website, https://windsorhillsumc.org. The services will be posted soon after we
livestream on Facebook each Sunday afternoon on the homepage.
We are livestreaming on Facebook at https://Facebook.com/WindsorHillsChurchRoanoke/.
You do not need a Facebook account to watch. We are working to improve our technology
to better help us all to worship together.
Please continue to pray for one another and our world through this challenging time.
Required Health Acknowledgement Form
If you plan to attend an in-person meeting at the church (or on behalf of the church), you
will need to fill out a Health Acknowledgement Form (like you may do if you happen to
visit in a hospital or other medical facility). It must be filled out before you attend and
kept up to date for subsequent visits. For those who do not have internet access, they
may call the Church Office to give the information over the phone. It may be found at:

Delaying Our Return to In-Person Worship
Dear Friends,
We are delaying our tentative date of July 12 for re-opening for in-person worship to a date yet to be determined. Here’s why: As preparation for gathering for in-person worship again, we established a Healthy Church Team (HCT) to work on many of the protocols for gathering safely and smartly. We had tentatively set a date to begin in-person worship of July 12 and began working towards doing so.
In recent weeks, our guidelines for worship from the Annual Conference had been clarified, which noted that not only would congregational singing be prevented, but also there would be no special music with singing as well. Since music is such an integral part of our worship and praise, the HCT wrestled with whether the worship would be a one-note service, with only speakers. Face coverings are required for the pastor as well as anyone reading scripture or other parts of the worship service. Our current technology expertise and equipment falls short of providing good quality audio in both in-person and on-line gatherings.
The HCT decided to postpone our in-person gathering, while we worked on technology issues that would enable us to provide joyful worship in both the in-person and on-line gatherings. This may be later in the Virginia Conference’s Phase 2 or in Phase 3. Additionally, Roanoke is seeing a spike in new COVID-19 cases.
Meanwhile, the State of Virginia moved to Phase 3 in its re-opening process on Wednesday, July 1. We do not know when the Virginia Conference will follow suit. The move to Phase 2 had a little over a month lag.
Thus, we are postponing our tentative date for re-opening for in-person worship and the Healthy Church Team will revisit the best ways and dates for us to move forward. We will keep you informed as we go.
I hope that more and more of you will worship with us on-line (via Facebook) on Sundays at 11 am or anytime later...or to hear the sermon via telephone (302-6964)...or to gather your small group via Zoom (we can help with that). Soon, small groups can begin meeting under these safety precautions for individuals:
filling out a Health Acknowledgement Form online at https://www.evc.vaumc.org/open/worshipregistration/Index.cfm (or call the church office)
Wearing a mask Practicing social distancing
If any of you have technical expertise with video, sound, or computers and wish to be a part of an enhanced Tech team, please let us know right now!
I know that some of you may be disappointed, while others may be relieved. Yet, for all of us, we long for that day when we can gather in the Lord’s house and sing praise to God and hear the Word of God proclaimed. We have this hope.
Exciting Youth Ministry Changes
The Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce that we will be staffing our youth ministry in a different way. Heather Case, our Director of Ministries with Young People, will be spearheading the work with our youth, developing a program that will enhance our youth ministry overall. One noticeable change is that our youth will be in
partnership with the youth of Raleigh Court UMC, our nearest UM neighbor on Grandin Road. Heather will work in tandem with their Director of Next Generation Ministries, Eric Anderson, in order to enhance the youth ministry at both churches. Through district events and some other shared events, the youth at the two churches have been around one another a good bit already. When they are able to get together in person again, the new youth ministry will be a strong 20+ person group, which will make for a more lively and enjoyable experience for all of them. Thus, Heather’s job description is changing to reflect this new reality, in addition to her interests in programming beyond young people. The “Dopesick Book Study,” as well as the recreational initiatives (softball, bowling) have already shown her abilities and interests in the area of programming. Her new title, you may have noticed, is Director of Program Ministries, but you may still call her “Heather” and continue to pray for her as she recuperates from her surgeries.
Senior Adults—The SPRC may also have an announcement soon regarding
the vacant Director of Ministries with Senior Adults position.

Farewell to the Rodmans
Godspeed to our dear friends, Megan and Bill Rodman, Lola and Nixie, who are
moving to Florida, as Bill has taken a new job. Megan capably led our youth for a
year and a half. We will miss them enormously.
Megan is the daughter of Phyllis Prado and the sister of Krista Davidson, who
remain members at Windsor Hills and is the aunt of Krista and Colin’s children,
Kiera, Cody and Kai. Love to all of them in this time of transition.
Congratulations! Garland and Sandra Kidd are proud to announce the graduation of their grandson, Nicholas Harmon Kidd
from the Medical College of Virginia May 8, 2020 with an MD degree in family practice. He was awarded
an internship in Family Medicine at the University of Virginia Medical College and is now serving there.
He will complete his residency there as well. Nicholas is the son of Brian and Sharon Kidd of Salem, VA.

As we enter July we are continuing to find ways for our church family and friends to stay connected to Windsor Hills Church life and continue to support our important mission projects. It’s time for:
"Christmas in July" for Operation Christmas Child
This will be our 10th year changing children's lives all over the world in Jesus' name through the power of a simple gift with Operation Christmas Child.

Shop for items that will fit into a shoebox
A "Wow" Item: a medium size item that will capture the child's attention the instant they open
their shoe box. Ideas include: soccer ball (deflated) with pump, stuffed animal, toys (puppets,
trucks, etc.), doll (baby or Barbie, etc.), musical instrument, outfit, shoes. School Supplies: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons, markers, notebooks, paper, solar calcula-
tors, coloring and picture books, etc. Back to school sales are everywhere in July.
Accessories: T-shirts, socks, hats, sunglasses, hair clips, jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra
batteries), etc.
Toys: Include items that children will immediately embrace such as toy cars, yo-yos, jump ropes,
balls, toys that light up and make noise (with extra batteries), etc.

Because of Vacation Bible School being cancelled this year, we will not have all of the wonderful donations of
school supplies and toys from our VBS children that we have been blessed with in the past.

Do you have a collection of unused takeout utensil packets at home? Consider donating them to the
Rescue Mission!
Under the leadership of Suzanne Porterfield and her grandson, we are collecting unopened, wrapped
utensil packets that the Rescue Mission can use with the meals they provide for the hungry in our
community. This ensures dinner guests have sanitary utensils.
The church started the collection by donating 1,500 utensil packets. A plastic bin is available at the lower
level education door for you to drop off any donations of disposable utensil packets. Suzanne will deliver
them to the Rescue Mission periodically.
Thank you!
Overload
When life takes a turn for the worse
With wars, murders, and such
When bad news come on like a curse
It can all be way too much
When you feel like throwing up your hands
And giving in to crying and despair
When disasters end your beautiful plans
And you think that no one cares
I have learned to turn off the T.V.
And place my focus on God
He alone is the answer, you see
When life seems to be so hard
Have we ever known God to fail
He has the answer to everything
The Bible has good things to tell
God’s solutions to whatever life brings
So in these days of sorrow and woe
Let’s let Jesus be our friend
He’s the one who always knows
The beginning to the wonderful end!

† STEWARDSHIP † Volume 7
JULY 2020 ALWAYS STEWARDS
Thank you for your faithfulness in supporting the mission and ministries of your church in this unprecedented time, brought to us by the invading force of a virus. That’s what stewards do; they remain faithful when it is tempting to be less than faithful. In this time they remember their community of faith for they know church still needs to be the church even when worship is not hap-pening as usual. The writer Marva Dawn tells the story of helping her whining granddaughter get dressed on a Sun-day morning as she pined, “Why do we have to go to church? Why can’t we stay home so I can play with my friends?” Marva started to give her the usual narrative about church and how it is good for us, but she stopped, and her reply has been, for me, so instructive. She said, “We are not going to church, we are going to worship. We are the church!” (recalled from memory). Nothing has changed; we are still the church and we are still praying, teaching, supporting, and making sure people receive care. Some pastors report they are busier than ever. The consensus is that having a virtual sermon or bible study or meeting is more strenuous because we cannot really see the expressions on the faces of those to who we speak. Our eyes, our smiles, our frowns, our raised eyebrows are all communicating. The times call out from us a deeper faith and greater allegiance of our Lord. So being the church, being a steward, practicing generosity as we are able, are ways we say to the world that Jesus is Lord and we are his disciples! Say it – Jesus is Lord and we are his disciples! When we return to in-person, on-site worship, we will not be the same as we were before. This pandemic with its shelter-in-place instruction has changed us all to some degree or another. The warm affection of welcoming hugs may still be a way off yet. That day will come again. But the basic truths have not: Jesus is Lord and we are his disciples! As disciples, faithful stewardship and generosity are hallmarks of what it means to be a Christ-follower, in good times and tough times.
