His book also reveals that St. Lukes was also affiliated with a nearby school. Called St.Lukes School, it was a boarding school for boys that was located around Newtown Rdfrom the late1800's until at least the early 1900's. The boys from the school would cometo sing at services at St. Lukes , and participate in Morning and Evening Prayer in thechapel schoolroom(now the Church Office). The schools goal was to give young

boys a moral, Christian education in a healthy environment. It prided itself in having agymnasium for athletics, as well as being in the fields with ample grounds that werehealthy and malaria-free.Rev. Hotchkin was involved with this school during histime as Rector.

Rev. Hotchkin also wrote books about Germantown, Mt. Airy Fox Chase and ruralPennsylvania as well as books called The Unseen Christ and The Living Savior. He died in 1912 in Bustleton at 80 years old. A window (Gospel side , The GoodShepherd) in St. Lukes was dedicated in his memory in 1921, the 60th anniversary ofthe church.

Congratulations to our own Llyn Evans

Carter...from GFS Leader to Presidentof GFS/USA!

Interview with Llyn Carter from gfspa.org website:

Q:What got you started in GFS?A: I grew up in the Episcopal Church in Virginia anddid not know of GFS as a youth.I first heardabout it through a friend. We worked together toreactivate a chapter as St. Luke's.Q:What keeps you involved?A: I have a deep passion to support young girls torealize their potential, so they can succeed in

whatever they want to be.Q:What are the rewards?A: My reward comes from watching the girls in mybranch and throughout the Dioceses grow andsucceed. I attended World Council in Korea becausethe Senior girls in my branch were sodetermined to go. At GFS National Council, LauraKriss was selected as the GFS/USA JuniorDelegate. What neater reward could I have then toserve as GFS/USA President with a JuniorDelegate from my very own parish!Q:If you weren't in GFS growing up, were youin Scouting?

A: Not really. My interest in Scouting fizzled out afterBrownies. My brothers stayed involved inScouting. My experience has been that GFS and GirlScouts can coexist. Several girls in my branchhave done both successfully.Q:What is the benefit of GFS?A: For the Girls it is development spiritually whichenhances their character development andhopefully their commitment to our Christian tradition.ForParents it is to feel secure that their girlsare safe with GFS leadership. ForLeaders it is toinfluence the development of girls to becomespiritual and competent young ladies, better equippedto handle themselves in our complex, rapidly

changing world. Finally, as a Sponsor I get to supportthe branches and help perpetuate the GFStradition for generations.

    GFS NEWS

Speech given by Laura Kriss at 2010

ational Assembly. Laura has been selected

    at GFS Junior Delegate.

I affirm, when I honor my emergingpassions, I begin to blossom into who Imight be.What do you think of when youhear the word passion? When I hear theword passion I think of caring forsomeone or something in a very strongway. I started dance when I was 2 yearsold, had my first recital at 3 and can'timagine my life without it. I just finishedmy 16th year of dance and not come to

realize that it is something I don't want tostop doing.I have become aware of thepassion I have for dancing.I know I have the same passion for filmmaking. I was in the 7th grade when Iknew I wanted to make movies with therest of my life. I don't think that I couldsee myself doing anything else.I started GFS when I was 6 years old. Iwas so excited to join. My sister alwaystold me how much fun she had. I learned alot from GFS. When I was younger Ilearned how to do crafts, but as I got olderI learned important life lessons, make lifelong friends from all over the country andthe world and grew spiritually.I find myself constantly telling peopleabout all of the different things that I havedone with GFS. I know that my passionfor GFS has grown over the years and Iwant to share it with everyone.Korea opened many doors for me. Goingto Korea really opened my eyes andchanged my view of the world. Myexperience there had kindled my passionto pursue becoming the Junior Delegate.I continue to affirm when I honor my

emerging passions, I begin blossominginto who I will be.

To borrow a slogan, "What Can BrownDo for You?" , let's ask "What CanChurch Do For You?" Well, it can:

    Help you grow in faith

Connect you with a caring community

Give you a place of beauty to meditateand take time out from your busy life

Give you a place where you can work forthe common good

Give a free education on scripture andreligious teachings

Give you a new appreciation for song

and musicMake you part of something biggerthrough worship and communion.

I am sure this does not begin to cover it,and that you could add to this list.

Also, I know I am preaching to the choir(figuratively and literally- as I think thechoir will be reading this.) You alreadyknow what church can offer. Ill borrowanother slogan (that only those over acertain age will remember!): I told 2friends, and they told 2 friends, and soon and so on..

Can you tell 2 friends? Hopefully, theyll tell 2 friends. And so on and soon.

    Why go to church?

Perhaps you've asked this question yourself at onetime. Perhaps it was asked of you.

To be more specific, I am talking about those who donot go to church who ask, "Why go to church?" It isoften asked with a baffled or skeptical tone, as if tosay, "Now why would you do that? What for?" Isuspect the word "church" for such folks conjures upimages of a boring place they have to sit in whilelistening to something boring when they can doingsomething more to their liking like sleeping late orwatching TV on Sunday morning. Perhaps "church"for them is a place that their parents dragged them toin childhood, and all they got out of the experience

    was enduring some unwelcome chore.

There are those who say "Why go to church when Ican pray at home?" I have heard this firsthand from afew good people. My answer: "Well, why go seeyour favorite singer in concert when you can justlisten to him at home?" The reply will likely be"Because it is a different experience." Exactly. Thesame goes for praying at home versus at church. It isa different experience- it is prayer with moredimensions. This is not to discount praying at home,or praying privately. There's nothing wrong withthat. However, this is only one aspect of spiritual life

    and quite limiting.

I think some forget, or are just unaware of whatchurch can offer. Church, when it is marketed oftengoes to extremes from heavy-handed evangelism tovery little promotion at all, thus leading people to bemisinformed or simply turned off. "Oh, church is fullof narrow minded hypocrites! or "The church justwants your money." I can understand where they aregetting this impression. Church is publicized poorly.I think the last good PR person the church had wasPaul the Apostle. The Episcopal Church has madesome attempt at promotion with a full page ad inUSA Today not long ago. Though it was well done,it is not nearly enough.
