The Winged OxThe Winged Ox is the Ancient Symbol ofSt. Luke, the Beloved Physician

A Newsletter for the People of The Memorial

Church of St. Luke, the Beloved Physician September 2011 Issue 129

Jesus said Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,

    Physician, heal yourself(Luke 4:23).

Every now and again I bring up the subject of the future of St.

Lukes. I worry sometimes that the topic is introduced so

often that it may seem a little like crying wolf. That is,

everyone becomes accustomed to hearing the warning and yet,

despite all of the handwringing things go on as usual without the

anticipated catastrophe occurring. I understand that attitude. There is

a part of me that feels the same way. After all, we are not confrontedwith the immediate threat of financial collapse, our Sunday

attendance is only slightly less than acceptable, and we are

celebrating our 150th anniversary in less than two months. In

addition, despite its small size, St. Lukes is blessed with such

strong lay leadership; with parishioners who extend themselves over

and above the call of duty to see that we continue to reach out to the

larger community outside of St. Lukes; and with an outstanding

music program (and minister of music), despite our limited

resources. This is all good news and it is all evidence that St. Lukes

is contributing to the Good Newsthe Gospelof Jesus Christ.

    S

o whats the problem? Well there are a couple of big issues

that I alluded to above. First, our attendance is not what it

needs to be. I am not pointing fingers; things happen. Somework on Sundays and cannot make it out regularly; some are ill and

so cannot come out. Add to this vacations and trips, and so on, and

you have the stuff of life. It is all understandable, but the bottom line

is that we regularly fall below fifty on a Sunday, and with increasing

frequency we fall below forty. If we are honest with ourselves, we

can see that that number of parishioners on Sunday makes it difficult

to justify a physical plant that includes four buildings, not to

mention a fulltime priest. And of course there are financial issues as

well. I wont quote numbers (if you are interested you can speak to

Katherine Gibson or John Brambilla, who are St. Lukes financial

team) but we are, year in and year out, significantly in the red. Since

I have been here St. Lukes has been drawing down its endowment,

and there is no indication that we will turn that around anytime soon.

We are blessed with an endowment because of the generosity of

parishioners in the past, many of whom remember St. Lukes in the

    wills.

WELCOME VISITORS!Areyou a new reader? Come visit us! Were so glad thatyou picked up this publication; we hope you will findit interesting and worth your time and we hope you

will take the next step and worship with us sometime. If you are worshiping with us, we welcome you!Whatever your religious background, and howeveryou have come to be here, we welcome you to St.Lukes. Please let us know who you are by signingour guest book (by the door) or filling out a cardfound in the pews. You can hand your card to anusher, or put it in the collection plate when it comeslater.

    P.2

So what is the solution? Im not sure. I would like us to focus on these problems collectively in the

coming fall, winter and spring. We are in our 150th year. Can we foresee St. Lukes being in existence in

another 150 years? Can we even foresee St. Lukes being here in another 50 years? I urge you to think

about what we can do to attract more people and to increase our revenue. And if you have any ideas about

how we might affect such changes, I urge you to speak to me or to a member of the vestry so that they can

bring your ideas to the attention of St. Lukes governing body. One thing seems clear, however, we must

increase revenue and attendance or cut back on expenses (sorry that this sounds so familiar given the

recent crisis in Washington; Im sure that we can address these problems in a more mature manner than

    our political representatives did).

I began by quoting from the Gospel According to Luke. We should heed these words. We are the church

of St. Luke the Beloved Physician and it is up to us to make the changes necessary to ensure that St.

Lukes can survive and flourish in the future. I hope we can work together during the coming months to

    ensure that this will happen.

    God bless,

    Father Tim
