The Winged OxThe Winged Ox is the Ancient Symbol ofSt. Luke, the Beloved Physician

Church of St. Luke, the Beloved Physician May 2010, Issue 117

    The Beloved Physician

You all know, of course, that there is a tradition going all the

way back to the early church and the New Testament

according to which St. Luke, our patron, was a physician.

For this reason, a healing ministry of one sort or another has always

seemed appropriate. This was, in large part, my motivation for

making the Wednesday evening liturgy a healing liturgy. But this

idea was not new with me; early on in my time at St. Lukes Kathy

Truesdale had suggested the idea to me. Kathy told me that she

envisioned St. Lukes having a healing ministry to offer to thecommunity.

Over the years that idea has remained in my mind and I continued to

think it would be wonderful if we could offer a healing ministry to

the community. And then some time ago I heard the Center for

Human Integration (CHI), which offered a number of healing

programs and trainings to the Northeast was closing for various

reasons. CHI was a program of the Medical Mission Sisters, a

community of Roman Catholic women religious whose primary

ministry is health and healing. When CHI closed it left a void in this

part of the city, and many in the area who were involved in their

    ministry felt the loss.

Recently I was talking with Pat Khan, our yoga teacher (well she

doesnt really belong to us but she does teach yoga here on Saturday

mornings and she also encourages people looking for a spiritual

home to check out St. Lukes). Pat was formerly involved with CHI,

having taught there, and she put me in touch with some other

teachers from the Center. As a result, we have begun to make plans

to offer various courses and trainings in the parish hall. Although the

programs will not really begin until the fall, a couple of programs

    will be held in May.

The first program is a three hour workshop with SiriOm Singh, who

is a certified instructor of Kundalini yoga. In addition to yoga,

SiriOm is also a licensed Occupational Therapist, a musician and

singer. Kundalini yoga is a style of yoga that was taught by Yogi

Bhajan. Yogi Bhajan brought Kundalini yoga to the US in the 1960s

and 70s, and trained many teachers. This style of yoga differs insome significant ways from more traditional hatha yoga, which

emphasizes stretching and postures. In Kundalini yoga more

emphasis is placed on breathing and on the movement of energy in

the body. SiriOm is a very good teacher (I can say first hand): he is

gentle, knowledgeable and he has a great sense of humor.

WELCOME VISITORS!Areyou a new reader? Come visit us! Were so glad thatyou picked up this publication; we hope you will findit interesting and worth your time and we hope you

will take the next step and worship with us sometime. If you are worshiping with us, we welcome you!Whatever your religious background, and howeveryou have come to be here, we welcome you to St.Lukes. Please let us know who you are by signingour guest book (by the door) or filling out a cardfound in the pews. You can hand your card to anusher, or put it in the collection plate when it comeslater.

    P.2

I encourage you to sign up for the workshop is you can, (and dont think it will be too hard for you; like

Pat, SiriOm teaches in a way that makes it possible for people of all ages and degrees of fitness to practice

    and benefit).

The second event is a sort of introduction to Reiki. Reiki is a healing art that involves laying-on of hands

and movement of healing energy throughout the body. Reiki practitioners are trained in the art of moving

healing energy to various parts of the body to restore health and well-being. Mike Wanner, who is a

certified master in five styles of Reiki healing was an instructor at CHI and teaches around the greater

Philadelphia and tri-state area. He is well known among the healing community in this area, having

trained in Japan and taught at various places around the world. He is offering two programs during the

afternoon of May 22 and all proceeds from these events will be donated by Mike to St. Lukes. I hope you

will also support Mike and take advantage of this opportunity.

I see Gods hand in these things coming together. I believe that St. Lukes will have a more significant

healing ministry in the months ahead. I think this ministry will benefit the larger community around us,

and I think it will also benefit our community. As more people come to the events planned here and have

the opportunity to meet us and see our facility I am confident some will be drawn into the community. But

even if that does not happen we will be offering a valuable service to the community. This is a time when

so many of us feel the need for healing and a place to go where people care. I envision St. Lukes as just

such a place. I hope you will support these initiatives.

    God bless,

    Father Tim

P.S.- Harriet and I would like to thank all of you for your kindness, good wishes and participation in

the April 18th luncheon. It was a special occasion for us and you were gracious as you always are.

The bulletin coveryou have been enjoying for the last

few weeks was drawn by Joan Wilhite.

The Butterfly in Christian Art is a symbol of the

resurrection of Christ and in a general sense the

resurrection of all people; the meaning clearly derived

from the three stages of life: life, death and

    resurrection.

I have told my story many times

about how I was caught. But unlike

real fish, once we are caught, we arenot doomed to a death as somebody's

dinner or as a wall display. Quite the

opposite is true: we are to keep living

and growing and in turn, become a

"fisher of men" (and women).Interestingly, our stories about being

caught can be used as a way to

inspire and spread the word to new

    ears.

    Fishing has contributed some

    negative expressions into our lexicon

too. When we are fooled, it is saidthat we have taken the bait" or "got

reeled in. Both imply naivete and

foolishness. I do not think of myself

as someone who simply "took the

bait", but as someone who has made

an informed decision before I let

myself be caught. I hope you feel the

    same way.

    Another negative expression is the

phrase, "cold fish" or "like a dead

fish". I do not think I need to tell youthat this is something we dont want

to be, and that nobody wants to be

around cold or dead fish. You know

what happens to dead fish after

    awhile: they stink!

Are you ready to go fishing? Are you

    ready to tell your story?

    -submitted by Stacey Carmody

    Fishing Stories

We recently heard the story of Simon Peter-the

fisherman, and how he cast his net and caught

no fish at first, but on the next attempt, he got

    an abundant amount.

Fish and fishing are prevalent symbols in

Christianity. We have all seen the fish symbol

on cars and so forth. In Simon's story, catching

fish is a metaphor for catching people into thefaith. I have never actually gone fishing, but

from what I've been told a "good" fishing day is

part skill, but also part luck. A fisherman canspend a long day on a lake and not catch a

thing. Even commercial fisherman who are

experts have this experience. If you have ever

seen the TV series, "Deadliest Catch" you will

see that the crab fishing crew can sometimes

wind up with empty crab pots despite having

the latest technology and equipment at their

disposal. There are other times when the pots

are filled to the rims with crabs and we see the

crew rejoice with surprise and glee.

The same thing applies to catching new church

members. Sometimes you try like mad to fishfor some and do not succeed, and sometimesyou catch new members when you least expect

    it.

We actually are in both roles: we are both the

fishermen AND the caught fish. You can

probably tell a story about how St. Luke's

"caught" you. If you were not raised an

Episcopalian, you also have a story about how

the Episcopal Church caught you. (Speaking of

the national church, I find it very fitting that our

presiding bishop was literally fishing for aliving as a marine biologist before fishing for

members as an ordained leader of the Church.)
