Stewardship
It is that time of year again. We are nearing the end of Pentecost and the season of Advent. Since the church year begins
with Advent, this is the time of year when you are asked to consider stewardship; that is, what you can contribute to St. Lukes. And it isimportant to note that contribution here does not simply mean adollar amount, though thats important. In addition you are asked toconsider how much of your time and talent you can contribute as
well. Of course, only you can answer those questions. In a small parish such as St. Lukes one is certainly called upon to contributemore of ones time and talent to keep the church operating than inlarger parishes. That is just a reality of small parish life. Nor arethe financial burdens in a small parish minimized because although
the budget is smaller, the pool of contributors is smaller as well.
So those of us who prefer to worship in small parishes are aware thatdoing so often comes at the cost of greater commitments of our timeand talent ,and possibly our treasure as well.Thats one way to think about the subject of stewardship andon that calculation it might not seem like a very good deal. There is,however, another, and I think better, way of looking at the question
of stewardship. When we give to St Lukes we are giving not just
of our time, talent and treasurewe are giving tangible aspects of
ourselves to the flourishing of Gods Kingdom. On this reckoning,St. Lukes is more than just bricks and mortar; it is an outpost of Gods Kingdom and Gods presence in this world. And we aremembers of that Kingdom and participants in that presence. Sowhen we contribute to the life of St. Lukes, we are contributing toGods life and acting as shareholders in that life. Surely this is a soundinvestment ; it is an investment in God, and so an investment in
ourselves. Of course thats very abstract. On a more concrete level,St Lukes is a loving, open and welcoming parish with much to offer to the community in which it sits. It is blessed with a good buildings
and a lovely worship space. But more importantly, it is blessed withall of you, and that is what is most impressive about St. Lukes.

This is a community that manifests its love of God in the care and concern that you give to one another; inits is strong lay leadership that keeps it going, and in the commitment that you have to one another so that
you may continue to share your lives with one another and with God. When you look at St. Lukes in thisway, can you think of a better use of your time, talent and treasure?
So please reflect on what you can give to St. Lukes in the year ahead. I hope and pray that you will giveto St. Lukes what you can, and that you will always receive from St. Lukes what you need.
On another note: I would like to begin our adult forum on the third Monday in NovemberNovember 15.Our topic this time around is the Episcopal Church. The book we will use is Your Faith, Your Life: An

Sesquicentennial
On Oct.10, 2010 we held our first monthly planning meeting
for St. Luke's 150 celebration for Oct., 2011. We had a productive meeting in that many attended, shared ideas andsuggestions, and volunteered to help. It was decided that allactivities would be held on one day, either Oct.15 or Oct.22, 2011. Fr. Tim agreed to ask the bishop to attend. Thedate has been set for Oct.15, 2011. We decided on a catereddinner in the hall. Maria Gardiner offered to look into pricesfor 100 people. Tickets will have to be sold in advance dueto limited space. Guests, such as former members and past
priests will need to be contacted. Caroline Catugno and GailHair will work on invitations. We will need a presentationon St. Luke's history as well as programs and advertising.Stacey Carmody has agreed to work on these. Entertainmentwas discussed. It was decided that a slide show of our church would be shown. Lisa- Jo and Mark Kriss haveoffered to put that together on C.D. They will need
parishioners to submit pictures, labeled, so that they can getstarted as soon as possible. Jackie Oxenford will find thecost for renting the Phillie Phanatic. Halina and MichaelJones have offered to do a skit. Maria Gardiner and BarbaraKaufold will get prices on a D.J. Many suggestions weremade concerning a commemorative for the event. Somethings mentioned were pins, note cards, Christmasornaments, mug, bookmark, tote bag, and raffle items.Jackie Oxenford will pursue the possibilities. A book of
pictures of our stained glass windows and archive picturesare available for display. Decorations will be covered byStacey and Cheri Carmody, Joyce Glenn, and Mark Geiger. We discussed having a banner across Welsh Rd. Mark Geiger will get information on a possible permit and cost of a banner.
The next planning meeting will be held on Nov. 14 duringcoffee hour, at which time we hope to have progress reportson what was discussed at the previous meeting.

Perhaps the most simplest way tofollow the calendar of saints is to usea liturgical calendar, and then look up the saints' names to learn moreabout them. This is good habit to getinto, and can make the Church Year more interesting and inspiring. Learnwhich holy women and holy men"speak" to you and why. Think abouthow youd like to be like this saintand how you can do that.
And remember that you are a sainttoo. You may not make it onto thecalendar, but you are still importantnonetheless and part of thecommunion of saints, and called tolead by example. Sainthood does notimply living a flawless life, we areall humans and all have faults. But,we do have the potential to make adifference, and to live as an exampleof our faith.
-Submitted by Stacey Carmody
Sainthood Belongs to All of Us
Have you ever consider yourself a saint? Well, the Episcopal Church has. The Church holds the belief that all baptized Christians are saints of God and have the potential to be examples of faith to others. We probably often think of saints as people who have lead extraordinarylives of holiness who have been long gone fromthis earth. This view holds very true. On a more
personal level, we also think of saints as peoplewe've known personally who have made adifference in our lives and who have since haveleft this earth. We remember them at St. Luke's
on All Saints' Day. Some churches observe thiskind of remembrance on November 2- AllSouls' Day, which specifically honors the dead. The dead are prayed for and remembered in asolemn service.
I have heard some Christian traditionsmistakenly accuse others of "praying to saintsand engaging in idolatry." This is not the case.We do not pray to saints but we invoke them to
pray for us, and we pray for them. God alwayscomes first, and if you look at the collects for Holy Days in the Book of Common Prayer, youwill see they are prayers to God that ask us helpus live by the example of the saint we arehonoring that day. The calendar of saints for our Church is found in the book Lesser Feasts and
Fasts. Recently, this book was updated and isnow called Holy Women, Holy Men. These are
people from all walks of life and all faiths whohave somehow epitomized Christian values. Many of them have historic significance aswell.
These saints are also honored at out Wednesday7:30pm liturgy. If more than one saint ishonored that day (or week), the celebrantchooses which one to honor.

A Thanksgiving Poem
The year has turned its circle,The seasons come and go.
The harvest all is gathered inAnd chilly north winds blow.
Orchards have shared their treasures,The fields, their yellow grain,
So open wide the doorway,Thanksgiving comes again.
