Co-Chairs, WOCE DPC
WOCE ConferenceNovember 2002
All of it
Towards Quantitative Oceanography
1. 1995-1997 DAC web sites established
2. 1998 V1 CD-ROM Set (A first for oceanography!)
3. 2000 V2 CD-ROM Set
4. 2002 V3 DVD-ROM Set1. Complete integrated WOCE data
5. 2002 WOCE Data Server1. Online 1-stop node for WOCE data
Complete collection of data within DACs
An estimated 10% of WOCE data collected will never be subitted...
WOCE GLOBAL DATA V3
1. Goals-Continue emphasis on data assembly & QC
-Complete collection of data within DACs
-Include data orphans PALACE DATA
-Integrate the data
Integration
1. Features- Increased consistency in conventions
Time and space coordinates Variable labeling and attributes File structure and formatting
- Ease of access (netCDF and ASCII)- Data retrieval to include QC flags and metadata- Search tool
2. Product Strategy- Off-line (DVD’S)- On-line (DODS, DVD Mirrors)
Other Interfaces
1. Netcdf and DOD's compatible- Languages Fortran, C, C++, Java, Perl
- Packages Matlab, IDL, Ferret, ncTools
- Automatic methods for writing code
2. Platforms (accessible)- Windows
- Linux, Unix
- Mac OS
Searching
1. Query users for search criteria: Latitude range, longitude range, depth range Time range Presence of (some) variables Expo-code Observation platform (data stream)
2. Search results List of DVD-ROM files (for off-line extraction) List of DODS URL (for on-line extraction)
On-Line Home for WOCE Data
1. Goal is to keep WOCE data alive: - Established 3 mirror sites of V3- Established an update site at NODC- Established DODS servers (expect 3)- Want to exploit powerful capabilities of
DODS to search, subset, and extract to efficiently obtain data they want (extend capabilities of the V3 search tool.)
The WOCE archive at WDC-Oceanography (NODC)
1. All DACs providing data archive to NODC
2. DACs are submitting entire holdings to NODC
3. Each archive will be assigned an NODC accession identifier that reflects WOCE; e.g
WOCE Global Data: Current Meter Data, Version 3.0”
4. WHPO, UOT and cm data (and flags) are to be preserved in NODC databases.
