The situation at Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) Institute and the unavailability of critical vaccines has caused great concern, particularly in the wool industry,

which relies on exports. The industry knows very well what dire economic consequences disease outbreaks can have on wool exports.

Vaccines are critical to keep our livestock healthy and form the first line of defence to prevent and control disease outbreaks, such as the dreaded Rift Valley fever.

Farmers are worried since the rainy season is upon us and the vaccines will only be available in October. Members of the Animal Health Forum are furious because of the lack of communication from OBP,

despite numerous requests to the institute to keep the forum informed.

Early notice would have enabled the industry to look at alternatives, for instance the importation of vaccines. Unfortunately, it’s too late now.

Also, read more about the NWGA’s economic advisory service to farmers, which is aimed at informing producers about the latest technologies and farming methods to help them farm more economical and increase profitability.

The Animal Health Forum (AHF) has expressed serious concern about the shortages of vaccines for livestock at the Onderste-poort Biological Products (OBP) Institute.

Priority vaccines such as Brucella S19, Bluetongue, B-Phem-eral, African horsesickness (bottle 2) and Rift Valley fever (in-tact) are currently unavailable. This situation can have dire economic consequences for the livestock industry and rural communities.

The outbreak of Rift Valley fever in 2010 had serious con-sequences for the wool industry, resulting in significant animal losses, a decline in wool production and export problems when Chi-na placed a ban on the importation of all grease wool from South Africa.

According to a statement issued by OBP, the above-mentioned vaccines will only be available from October.

The AHF said it was also concerned about the fact that some batches of vaccines did not con-form to standards.

When a delegation of the AHF visited the facility on 1 August this year, all production had come to a standstill.

The AHF has requested OBP to communicate with the livestock industry regularly (at least once a week) regarding the availability of vaccines. This will enable the industry to investigate alternatives, such as the importation of critical vaccines, or requesting private institutions to manufacture vaccines.

In a statement, Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) Institute has apologised for

the inconvenience caused by its current up-grading and the unavailability of certain vac-

cines and said it was committed to producing quality vaccines.

The institute explained that it was undergoing recapitalisation to obtain

Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). National Treasury provided funding of R500 million for three years for this project,

which started in 2012/13. The project consists of three components:• upgrade and modernisation of the infrastructure and equipment

• improving production processes• training of staff.

The OBP has assured that the replacement of old equipment was almost complete and that the company was now reviewing and improving production processes to increase vaccine

yields. It said that the priority vaccines currently not available (Brucella S19, Bluetongue, B-Phemeral,

African horsesickness (bottle 2) and Rift Valley fever (intact)) would become available in October this year.

New Zealand sheep farmers will start voting in September on a proposal to reintroduce the compulsory levy on their wool, which they have stopped paying about five years ago.

A farmer and wool industry group behind the idea is proposing a charge of three cents per kilogram of wool, which would raise more than NZ$4,5 million (R40 million) a year.

The group’s chair, Saundra Faulkner, said NZ$2,7 million (R24 million) would go towards education, raising awareness and demand for wool. That would include the International Campaign for Wool, launched in 2010.

“The Campaign for Wool has had some phenomenal opportunities presented to them that they have been unable to take up here in New Zealand simply because they didn’t have the funding,” she said.

“Their focus is largely off-shore, but they’ve got some great ideas that could be done here as well.”

The levy contribution to the Campaign for Wool would replace a payment that currently comes from wool testing, she said.

Members of the NWGA already pay a voluntary levy to help fund South Africa’s contri-bution for the International Campaign for Wool and other campaigns to promote wool.

Since many novice farmers without practical experience or knowledge are entering the commercial and emerging sectors of the wool industry, the national executive of the NWGA has identified a need for short courses in sheep production.

Grootfontein has previously offered such three-month courses. The NWGA and the principal of Grootfontein Agricultural Institute, Strydom Schoonraad, recently met to discuss the possibility of once again presenting short courses.

Following the meeting, Grootfontein undertook to provide the NWGA with a list of potential courses, with the possibility of presenting some of the courses on-farm for groups of 10-20 people. Course fees will be applicable to cover the costs of courses.

Skakel Mariette Watson by 051 447 3023 vir navrae of bestellings. Skakel Tania Lusse by 073 037 7200 vir

Produsente moet betrokke raak by grondhervorming, sê Ernst Janofsky, hoof van Absa se landbou-eenheid.

[12] region 20 holds its annual congress

Approximately 500 farmers attended the 18th annual congress of region 20’s Woolgrowers’ Association at the Theko Fihla administrative area in the Centane district earlier this month.

The most important resolutions discussed included the genetic improvement programme, request for more infrastructure, land tenure and problem animals.

Because of the absence of top government officials, local departmental managers who attended the congress promised to submit the resolutions to their heads of departments.

The much-anticipated appearance of the Eastern Cape MEC of the Department of Rural Development and Argrarian Reform, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, did not materialise and Leon de Beer, general manager of the NWGA, was asked to deliver the keynote address.

A committee was elected to follow-up on the resolutions and monitor the progress of interventions. Members of Region 20 thanked the Mnquma Municipality, EC DRDAR, Zoetis, Molatek, BKB, CMW’s

Sinethemba Mafama, Talitha Pharma, Cowdens and Mtiza for their contributions to make the congress possible.

Students from the King Hintsa FET College in Centane who were invited attend the annual congress of Region 20. They said afterwards that they felt extremely privileged to be part of the congress and received valuable information from the NWGA as commodity organisation, the Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform and the many private companies. They said they would greatly benefit from what they have learnt and that it has stimulated their interest in agriculture and in the wool industry.
