The Access course opened doorways that I never dared dream of.

When I first enrolled I never imagined where it would lead; I wondered what I was doing there. I had this wild dream that I wanted to do a psychology degree but never imagined that I would achieve the results I required to get there.

I had been a carer for family members for 20 years. I had lost all confidence and had given up hope of a life for myself. At the beginning of the Access course I was in hospital, and had been for a month with a neurological illness, I thought all hope was lost. Fortunately I managed to start a week or two later. Newly disabled my confidence was at an all-time low.

To my amazement I completed the course in a year, gaining distinctions on all but one assignment.

The Access course opened a doorway. Not only a doorway to realising my own ability, but most importantly a doorway opened to me to begin to gain confidence and to dream and set goals for my future career.

Last summer, 2013, I graduated from the University of Wolverhampton. Not only did I achieve a First Class Honours in Psychology (Counselling Psychology) but also received three awards: the BPS Student of The Year (British Psychological Society), the Capero Prize for the highest overall grades in the School of Applied Sciences, and The Bernice McCorley Prize for the best dissertation. Never before had one person been awarded all three awards, and as the university structure has since changed it won’t happen again. I have since presented my research at three national conferences.

This year, 2014, I begin my professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology.

The seeds of hope were sown in the support and encouragement I received on the Access course.

Jimmy LannonAccess to Higher Education (Art and Design)

Prior to joining the course Jimmy was out of work on the sick, he had damaged his spine in an accident and was unable to work, unmotivated and stuck in a rut!

Jimmy decided that he needed to get back into society so joined a general art class. This gave him back the confidence he required to progress onto the next stage. It was suggested that he move onto the Access to Higher Education Diploma. Jimmy said “this was the best thing I ever did, it gave me the confidence boost I needed to get on and into college in order to actually do something with my life.

The course gave me the opportunity to live again, for me it was more like an Art for health thing; it got me out of the house and gave me back a passion to learn and the opportunity to get on. I feel I have learned so much and now I have achieved my dream and I am studying a B.A. Hons in Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton, it’s amazing.

Jimmy has now graduated and is looking at completing the Master of Arts at the University of Wolverhampton.

Jonathan JohnsonTraineeship

In July 2013 Jonathan came to AES with his father looking for a programme of learning to suit his needs and with appropriate support for his dyslexia. Jonathan admitted that he did not enjoy school and had not achieved any qualifications since then he had spent time trying out various building trades as his father owned a building company but he did not enjoy these either. After discussing his interests and working with Learning Services a programme was developed which included; general ICT, Webpage Design, Digital Imaging, British Sign Language (BSL), English and Maths. Later in the academic year it was suggested that Jonathan may like to become our first Traineeship and attended an interview at the Wolverhampton Science Park. He is now coming to the end of the work placement and has experience working with small businesses, supporting them by designing small pieces of equipment using the 3d printer and is now discussing how he can be supported to become self-employed. He has also achieved a full Level 2 ITQ certificate, Level 2 English and is awaiting results in maths and BSL.

Jonathan said coming to the Adult Education Service is the best thing he has ever done.

Barrie MartinMFL and CELTA Student

I first started as a student at WAES by taking an introductory course for Japanese in September 2011. I’d always wanted to learn the language so I continued with more advanced language classes at WAES through 2012 and 2013 when I took and gained a GCSE in Japanese. This also enabled me to take and pass the N5 and N4 levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test administered by the Japanese government.

I started volunteering in ESOL classes at WAES In November 2012 after seeing an advert on the WAES website. Being unemployed at the time I took the opportunity to gain some valuable experience. I continued to volunteer through 2013 and decided to enrol on the CELTA course in October 2013 so I could gain a professional qualification in teaching English as a foreign language. I continued to gained voluntary experience in classes while attending the course, finally completing it successfully in April 2014. Because of WAES I now have some valuable experience on my CV, a job as an ESOL teacher and foreign language skills.

BSL Level 2 student midwife, says“I know what it’s like to be Deaf as my hearing was damaged in an accident I had as a child. I’m learning BSL to complement my job so I can help Deaf families access midwifery services”

ESOL student 1, (Initials: US, Polish, been learning for 6 months)“I am working as a lunchtime supervisor at a local school and before I started I found it difficult to talk to and play with the children. After 5 months of class I feel happier and more confident with the children, teachers and my work friends.”

ESOL student 2, (Initials: NA, Sudanese)“I learnt ESOL at Entry 3 and decided that I wanted to do more courses but my English was not good then. Once I passed Entry 3 I wanted to carry on and do Level 1. It has given me confidence to enrol on another class. I am doing Numeracy with Adult Education and I think I might do some more courses in the future.”

Family Learning group, Woden Primary SchoolComments from the school:

Children are coming to school smiling, the attendance has improved and they’re more talkative. The course has helped the learners to integrate with other parents and improved their relationship with the school. Seeing parents learning and being involved in school life has motivated the children to try harder at school and improved their attendance and behaviour.
