On behalf of Women for Women International, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Women for Women International UK Gala.

It is a true honour that you have joined us for this special celebration. Tonight marks not only our annual Gala but also the launch of “Share” – Women for Women International’s recipe book featuring recipes from renowned international chefs such as Alice Waters, Maggie Beer and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and humanitarians such as Aung San Suu Kyi, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Emma Thompson, Annie Lennox, Richard Branson, Paul McCartney and Mia Farrow. Nothing conveys our interdependence more compellingly than the food we eat and as such the cookbook celebrates our common humanity.

I have travelled to countries affected by war and conflict, and met women who have been through unimaginable hardship and trauma. I have also seen how women are able to overcome these challenges, and with courage and resilience, rise up to create lasting change. It is connections with people like you that give them the strength and opportunity to rebuild their lives, and so tonight we are also celebrating our common humanity.

Through a holistic programme that combines direct financial aid, business skills training, vocational training and rights education, Women for Women International helps women in countries affected by war and conflict including Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Sudan.

Currently there are women waiting to enrol in our programme and tonight I hope that with your help we can raise funds to provide more women with the opportunity to rebuild their own lives and the lives of their families.

CHRIS JACKSONAfter visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2009, Chris returned with the aim of making more people aware of the ongoing conflict and its impact on women in the region. Bereft of anything other than a love of running to do this, he decided to throw on his trainers and attempt to run 12 marathons in 12 months to bring awareness of the conflict in the DRC to the UK. After running on roads and treadmills he went back to the DRC to run the first marathon there in an effort to share the stories of women in the DRC Women for Women International programme. With his legs exhausted he then attempted to complete the world’s longest kayak race, paddling over 750km in 70hrs. In 2011 he was named the Cosmopolitan ‘Ultimate Man of the Year’ in recognition of his efforts. Chris will be putting his running shoes back on this summer as he heads back to the DRC to visit the Women for Women International programme and keep the focus on the DRC and those affected by the conflict.

We are delighted that Chris is running his 13th marathon for Women for Women International here tonight.

JUNE SARPONG MBEJune has enjoyed a 15-year career which has already seen her become one of the most recognisable faces of British television, as well as being one of the UK’s most intelligent and dynamic young hosts. June is a media phenomenon and is the only host of her generation that is equally comfortable interviewing politicians, celebrities and members of the public.

June was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) on the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2007 for her services to broadcasting and charity, making her one of the youngest people to receive an MBE. June is the Co-Founder of the WIE Network (Women: Inspiration & Enterprise). WIE first launched in New York City in 2010 and is in its second year in the UK. This acclaimed conference has featured leading speakers from a gamut of industries, previous speakers include: Sarah Brown, Melinda Gates, Arianna Huffington, Donna Karan, Queen Rania, Nancy Pelosi, Iman and many more.

June’s latest endeavour Row6.com is a multiplatform anthropological project that aims to get the world talking through story telling.

Case Study

Although the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina ended in 1995, its catastrophic effect on the economy is still being felt today. It shattered lives and women in the region continue to struggle to heal wounds and rebuild communities. It was here, in 1993, that Zainab Salbi felt compelled to start Women for Women International, after she and her husband witnessed the devastation that the war had caused. Since then, over 34,000 women have been helped in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

‘When the Serbs came, we fled Srebrenica. The last memory I have of my home was looking at my sons under a tree in the front garden. My husband and boys ran into the woods and up into the mountains, and my daughter-in-law and I ran in the other direction. She and I survived; they didn’t. My sons were only 22 and 16 years old. The elder one was about to become a father. They haven’t found the bodies of either of them yet, or that of my husband – I hope that one day I will be able to bury them.

I came back to Srebrenica in 2000 to walk where my sons last walked. I had police protection, but just before we got to my house they told me that they would not go in with me and that if I went any further it was at my own risk. A Serb family was living there and when I knocked they did not open the door, though I knew they were in. I was not scared. I just wanted to see if there were any photos left of my family. Someone finally answered – they told me to go away and threatened to kill me if I came back, but they didn’t frighten me. In my mind I saw my sons standing there next to the tree where I had last seen them.

Then I found out about Women for Women International. Thanks to their microcredit programme I was able to get a loan and build a house for myself and my grandchildren. Through the skills training they offered I also learned about growing vegetables and rearing chickens, which I sell in the market. Just as importantly I met my friends, whose support is so vital to me: we understand each other.

Through the worst, I never lost hope that life would get better, and was inspired by words from a Bosnian song: ‘There is always enough space at the top when you start from the bottom.’ And so I realised that my life couldn’t get any worse – it could only get better, because I was starting from the bottom.’

After negotiating permission from her uncle to leave the house, Farida walked two hours to the community centre where she knew Women for Women International were enrolling women. Her neighbour had told her about the programme that would give her the skills, knowledge and opportunity to earn an income. After queuing with over 1,000 women, Farida waited and when her turn came, she was turned away. Women for Women International only had 500 places.

This was a dark day for Farida and a dark day for Women for Women International, who want to help more women.

In the spring of 2008, Women for Women International launched its first agribusiness initiative. Over the course of its first three years, the programme trained more than 3,000 women in how to use sustainable farming practices to grow crops that can be sold for profit in the local market, as well as providing food for their families. On average, women like Matilda are making twice the average per capita income in South Sudan. The farm has also contributed to restoring community in a region that has been riven with tribal violence in the last decade.

‘I grew up in a cattle camp where soldiers would stop to rest before returning to the battlefront. Girls in my camp had to carry the soldiers’ luggage and ammunition to the next station. Sometimes the soldiers would also “ask” us to sleep with them. There was no way to refuse.

Our home was burned by a militia, and we fled to Ethiopia. The refugee camp there was a town of tents sunk in the mud. There were beds for a lucky few, but most of us slept on the ground at night, and some slept standing up. Those with beds traded places with us – there were many kindnesses like this. We were surrounded by barbed wire and felt like we were in a cage. We tried to write to people. We wrote to government officials, UN officials, we wrote to NGOs, we wrote to whoever we knew, hoping that someone, anyone, would come, see what we were going through, and save us from this hell.

I have had much darkness but also much light in my life. After returning to my country, I met my husband Bakri and we now have three children, including our new baby Matak. I began working on the farm when it opened in 2008, cultivating six plots of kale, cow peas and okra. From these crops I now earn as much as 50 South Sudanese pounds per day – almost enough to support my family. In my Dinka community, most men take many wives, but I am Bakri’s only wife, and we love each other very much. When I cannot tend to the farm, he does it for me, and when I must work, he looks after our little boy. My prayers have been answered.’

Silent Auction Lot 17 - Salmon Fishing Frenzy• Kit: The kit includes a choice of an available bamboo fly rod from our workshops, a matching fly reel, leather rod tube, leather reel case and wooden presentation case. As each case is made to order the lead time for delivery will be 4-6 weeks. • Postage and insurance will be charged for deliveries within the UK and abroad and will be quoted at the time of shipping. • Any additional customisations including engraving, embossing and silk fly lines will be charged at the standard rates.

The items offered in this sale and listed in this catalogue will be sold by Women for Women International (UK), registered with the charity commissioners under number 1115109. Any questions in relation to the auction should be directed to Women for Women International (UK) and not to the auctioneer who serves merely as auctioneer for Women for Women International (UK) in conducting the sale and participates on the following terms and conditions which govern the sale of all the property offered (as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the auction):1. 5. Women for Women International (UK) has endeavoured to catalogue and describe the items and services correctly, but everything is sold “as is”. Certain auction items and/or services may have restrictive use or other qualifications which may affect value, application or use thereof.

6. Auctioned items including vacation homes are non-transferrable. Purchasers are bound by the precise restrictions specified by the donors. The terms are not negotiable. Please read the specifications and limitations carefully. Women for Women International (UK) and the donors reserve the right to impose such further restrictions as they deem reasonably appropriate in relation to the activities and/or properties auctioned here-in. Successful bidders agree that the property owners and Women for Women International (UK), their agents, and employees shall have no liability whatsoever arising from the use of the properties and their associated facilities by any occupant of the successful bidder and further agree, if requested, to sign an agreement to that effect. If requested by the property owners, successful bidders agree to sign an agreement indemnifying the property owners and Women for Women International (UK) for any losses or damages to the properties and their associated facilities caused by any occupant of the successful bidder.

7. Reservations for the use of property, tickets, etc. must be mutually arranged between the successful bidders and the donors unless otherwise specified.

8. Unless otherwise stated, dates and times are to be arranged at the mutual convenience of the donor and buyer.

9. Persons under the age of 21 may not bid in the auction.

10. Any lot or property may be withdrawn by Women for Women International (UK) or the auctioneer at any time before the actual sale.

11. Unless otherwise announced on the evening, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue.

Silent auction rules

12. The silent auction will begin at 8:00 pm. Closing times will be posted and announced during the course of the evening.

13. Bidding in the silent auction will be conducted on the IMLequipment provided. Instructions for the use of the IML equipment are located on page 51 of this programme.

14. The person offering the highest qualifying bid prior to theclose of bidding will be deemed the winner. Late bids will not be accepted. The decision of the person closing the auction is final. The winning bids will be displayed after closing.

Live auction rules

15. Women for Women International (UK) and /or the auctioneer reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the sale records of Women for Women International (UK) shall be conclusive in all respects.

16. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the property, he may reject the same and withdraw the property from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance.

17. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof, (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price.

Pledging rules

18. Pledging on Live Pledge will be conducted on the IML equipment provided. Instructions for use of the IML equipment are located on page 51 of this catalogue.

19. Pledges are binding commitments to pay the amount pledged and, once made, may not be withdrawn.

Payment rules

20. Women for Women International (UK) will not release a lot to a successful buyer until payment of the total amount due has been received by Women for Women International (UK) in cleared funds. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to Women for Women International (UK) by law including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, Women for Women International (UK), at its option, may either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any shortfall between the original sale price and the price achieved upon resale, all other charges due hereunder and any incidental damages.

21. Payments for purchases will be accepted in cash (GPB), by cheque (GPB or USD) or by all major credit cards, excluding AMEX. The exchange rate for USD transactions will be the exchange rates on 16 May 2013 as reported by the Federal Reserve Bank and the IMF. Payments should be made payable to Women for Women International (UK).

22. Payments can be made by cheque on the evening at the cashiers table. For those items present on the night, payment must be made at the cashiers table if the winning bidder intends to take their item. Alternatively you will be contacted following the event to make payment and arrange delivery.

23. In no circumstances will Women for Women International (UK) refund any purchase made or refund the amount paid in respect of any lot.

24. Neither shipping nor delivery costs are included in the price at which a lot is purchased.

25. These conditions of sale, as well as the purchaser’s and Women for Women International (UK)’s rights and obligations hereunder, shall be governed by and construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. The purchaser shall be deemed to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of courts of England and Wales.
