Web: Patriot League All*Access The top-seeded American University women’s basketball team will square off against fifth-seed Holy Cross on Monday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in the Patriot League Semifinals in Bender Arena. American (23-6, 14-0 PL) matched a program record with its 23rd victory of the season in Thursday’s 59-54 triumph over No. 8 Lafayette in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. It was far from easy for the Eagles to pick up their 15th win in a row as the Leopards hung around the entire game and even led by a point with just over five minutes to play. But AU rallied with a 7-0 spurt and closed the game on a 10-4 run to earn the five-point win, advancing to the semifinals for the third consecutive season and seventh time overall since joining the Patriot League in the 2001-02 season. Patriot League Player of the Year Lisa Strack led American with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 8-of-10 from the foul line. Her two free throws with 3.9 seconds left extended AU’s three point lead at the time and virtually iced the game. Fellow All- Patriot League First Team performer Alexis Dobbs added 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting and took a key charge on the defensive end with under a minute to play as AU held a three-point lead. AU’s 23 wins on the season match the program record, which was set by the 1997-98 team that finished with 23-7 overall record. The Eagles won 22 games in each of the last two seasons. Holy Cross (17-13, 7-7 PL), the fifth-seed in the tournament, defeated No. 4 Army, 59-50, on Thursday night in West Point, N.Y., to advance to Monday’s semifinals. Christine Ganser led the Crusaders with 17 points off the bench on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting. Holy Cross held Army’s All-Patriot League First Team performer Anna Simmers to 13 points on only 3-of-17 shooting. AU won both regular season matchups against the Crusaders, a 61-58 victory on January 14 in Worcester and a 67-47 triumph on February 11 in Bender Arena. The Eagles have won seven in a row and 10 of the last 11 against Holy Cross although the Crusaders lead the all- time series, 14-12. Record-Setting Conference RunThe Eagles fi nished the regular season with a 14-0 Patriot League record becoming the fi rst conference school to ever go undefeated in a 14-game league schedule (which began in 2001-02). Holy Cross fi nished at 12-0 in league play on two occasions (1990-91 and 1996-97) in a 12-game conference slate. The Eagles’ 14-0 record is one-game better than their previous best conference mark of 13-1 in the 2009-10 campaign.

20-20 VisionThe Eagles have now recorded three straight 20 win seasons and have matched the program record for victories with 23. This is the sixth time in program history that AU has hit the 20-win mark.

Another Regular Season Title...AU’s win at Navy on February 15 gave the

Eagles their third Patriot League regular season championship in a row and fourth in the last fi ve seasons.

...By Quite a MarginAmerican (14-0) fi nished league play with fi ve-game margin in the standings over second-place Lehigh (9-5), the largest margin between the top-two teams in conference history. Prior to this season, the largest gap between the top-two teams in conference history came in 1996-97 when Holy Cross (12-0) fi nished four games better than second-place Navy (8-4).

15 and CountingAmerican’s current 15-game winning streak is the longest in program history, breaking the previous mark of 11 which was set on two previous occasions. The Eagles ran off 11 wins in a row in the 2007-08 campaign as well as last season from November 28 through January 22.

D is KeyAmerican has won 18 of its last 20 games -- including 15 in a row -- after beginning the season with a 5-4 mark. Defense has been a key factor in the surge as they have held 13 of their opponents this year under 50 points with seven scoring at or below the 45-point mark. American is allowing 52.6 ppg this year, the 15th-best mark in the country. In conference play, AU gave up a conference-best 49.2 ppg.

Corkery Making HistoryHead Coach Matt Corkery, the 2012 Patriot League Coach of the Year, has accumulated a 86-37 record in four seasons at the helm at American, and his .699 winning percentage is the best in Patriot League history. Additionally, his .821 winning percentage in conference play (46-10) is also tops in history of the conference. Corkery has now earned conference Coach of the Year accolades in two of the last three seasons.

In Elite CompanySenior guard Lisa Strack was named the Patriot League Player of the Year, the second Eagle to ever earn the award. A two-time Patriot League Player of the Week this season, Strack leads the Patriot League in steals (2.7 spg) and is second in free throw percentage (78.0), eighth in scoring (11.6 ppg), eighth in assists (2.9 apg), and 11th in rebounding (5.6 rpg). On February 22 at Bucknell, she became the 15th student-athlete in program history to reach 1,000 career points and now has 1,049 points, 14th-most in AU history.

It’s Not All About the OffenseSenior guard Ebony Edwards picked up American’s fi rst Patriot League Defensive Player of the Award since the honor was created in 2004-05. She has recorded 2.0 steals per game, third-most in the conference, and improved her output to 2.2 steals per contest in league play. Her seven steals in AU’s win at Lehigh this year was the most by any Patriot League student-athlete this season.

All-Around Student-AthleteSophomore guard Alexis Dobbs was selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s basketball, becoming AU’s second student-athlete to ever earn the accolades. Dobbs was an All-Patriot League First Team selection on the court and in the classroom, the Biology major carries a 3.8 cumulative grade-point average. Liz Hayes is the only other AU women’s basketball student-athlete to pick up the award as she earned it in back-to-back seasons in 2007 and 2008.

No Freshman JittersFreshman guard Jen Dumiak’s role increased throughout the regular season as she fi nished as AU’s third-leading scorer with 7.1 ppg, including 9.2 ppg in conference play. As a result, she was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team, joining former honorees Edwards (2009), Strack (2009), and Dobbs (2011).

Enjoying the RoadWhile AU has homecourt advantage throughout the Patriot League Tournament, the Eagles had tremendous success away from home this season. American fi nished the regular season with a 12-1 record in games played away from home with nine true road victories and two neutral site wins. This matches the program record for most non-home wins, which was also accomplished in 1986-87, 1997-98, and 2010-11.

Grand TheftAU has recorded double-digit steals in 15 games this season, including a season-best 20 in the February 8 win at Lehigh, which was the eighth-most in a single game in program history. The Eagles lead the Patriot League with 10.7 steals per contest, while individually, Strack is tops in the conference with 2.7 spg. Edwards is third in the conference with 2.0 spg while Dobbs is fi fth with 1.9 spg.

Taking Care of the RockAU leads the Patriot League in turnover margin at +3.97 and is the only conference team to have a margin higher than +0.47 (AU is ranked 35th nationally in the statistic). In conference play, American’s turnover margin was a league-best +6.6.

60 is the NumberAU is 40-2 in its last 42 games when scoring at least 60 points. Last season, the Eagles fi nished last year a perfect 18-0 when reaching the 60-point mark, and are 9-2 this year. At one point, AU had a streak of 30 straight wins when scoring at least 60 during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.

Cleaning the GlassAU is 13-0 this season when outrebounding its opponent, and going back to last season, the Eagles have won 34 of their last 35 when holding an advantage on the glass (which dates back to the 2009-10 season).

Ready, Set, Go!When American gets off to a good start, they are proving to be a diffi cult team to beat. The Eagles are 20-0 this season in games where they lead at halftime.

A Little Help from Your FriendsA big reason for American’s success this season was the strong play of its bench. AU’s bench has outscored that of its opponents in 19 of its 29 games and is 16-3 in these contests.

Big Shot DobbsDobbs knocked down a game-winning three-pointer off a pass from Strack with 0.7 seconds remaining on February 22 at Bucknell, breaking a tie game and lifting the Eagles to a 62-59 win. This marked AU’s fi rst game-winning bucket in the fi nal fi ve seconds of a game since Chanel Hunt helped American win at Colgate on January 23, 2004.

Block PartyStephanie Anya put together a record-setting evening in the January 11 win over Lehigh with a program record seven blocked shots. The junior is third in the Patriot League with 1.7 bpg this year.

Big Expectations for 2011-12American was been picked fi rst in the Patriot League preseason poll, the second straight season the Eagles were selected to win the league. Strack, an All-Patriot League Second Team performer last year, was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

Prior Matchups vs. Holy Cross This YearAmerican swept the two regular season matchups against Holy Cross, posting a 61-58 victory on January 14 in Worcester and a 67-47 triumph on February 11 in Bender Arena.

American 61, Holy Cross, 58 - January 14, 2012 - Worcester, Mass.Lisa Strack recorded a game-high 17 points while Alexis Dobbs and

Jen Dumiak each added 10 as the Eagles escaped from Worcester, Mass., with a 61-58 victory. Strack’s 17-point output came on 6-of-11 from the fi eld, including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond-the-arc. Dobbs was 4-of-8 shooting and added fi ve assists while Dumiak was 5-of-10 from the fl oor. Geleisa George led AU on the glass with six rebounds and registered a game-best three steals. AU shot 44.1 percent from the fi eld in the contest, including a 50-percent clip in the second half. The Eagles were 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from deep and recorded 13 steals. Holy Cross, meanwhile, shot 40.4 percent and held a 43-29 rebounding advantage in the defeat.

American 69, Holy Cross, 49 - February 11, 2012 - Washington, D.C.The Eagles used a 22-4 second-half run to distance itself from Holy Cross en route to a 67-47 victory in Bender Arena. The win pushed the Eagles’ Patriot League record to 10-0 as they became the fi rst league school in seven years to begin conference play with 10 straight wins. Jen Dumiak led American with a team-high 14 points off the bench on 6-of-11 shooting while adding seven rebounds and four assists. Lisa Strack was also in double fi gures for AU with 13 points on 5-of-10 from the fi eld along with fi ve steals. The 2011-12 season is Matt Corkery’s fourth as the head coach at American University and his seventh overall on the staff. Corkery has accumulated a 86-37 career record at the helm in his four years, including

a 46-10 mark in Patriot League play.

In his four seasons, his squads have earned three Patriot League regular season championships, two appearances in the Patriot League Championship Game, two WNIT berths, and he was honored as the Patriot League Coach of the Year award in both 2010 and 2012. Corkery has coached two Patriot League Players of the Year, four Patriot League All-Rookie Team honorees, seven All-Patriot League selections, and 21 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll picks.

Corkery has already etched his place in the Patriot League record books with his .670 career winning percentage, which is second all-time in conference history (heading into this season). Kevin Morris, who coached at Fordham from 1993-95, owns the best career winning percentage in Patriot League history with his .678 mark. Additionally, with a victory over Brown last December 31, Corkery became the fastest coach in program history to reach the 50-win plateau as it took him only 76 total games to that point.

The 2010-11 season was a successful campaign for Corkery’s Eagles, as they earned a share of their second straight Patriot League regular season crown with a 10-4 record. AU reached the Patriot League Championship Game for the second straight season after winning at Lehigh, the league’s two-time defending champion, in an overtime thriller in the semifi nals. American fi nished with 22 victories on the season, matching the 2009-10 team for the second-most single-season wins in program history.

The 2010-11 squad also set history with its 11-game win streak from November 28, 2010 through January 29, 2011, which matched a program record. During that span, the Eagles captured the Hawk Holiday Classic with victories over Binghamton and Brown. AU also extended its home win streak to 14 games with a midseason victory over Holy

Cross, a mark that tied another program record.

The 2009-10 campaign, Corkery’s second as the head coach, was a historic season for the Eagles as they fi nished Patriot League play with a 13-1 Patriot League record, their best ever conference record. This 13-1 mark earned AU a share of the Patriot League regular season championship. American’s 22-10 overall record gave the Eagles only their fourth ever 20-win season, and the 22 triumphs were the second-most in school history. As a result, AU was rewarded with its program-record third straight postseason berth and

Corkery was tabbed as the conference’s coach of the year, American’s second-ever honoree.

In Corkery’s inaugural season of 2008-09, he led American to a 19-12 record, which included the program’s second consecutive postseason appearance. The Eagles’ 19 total victories were the most since the 1997-98 campaign. The Eagles defeated two NCAA Tournament teams, Drexel and Lehigh, during the season.

In addition to on-the-court success, Corkery has helped bring increased interest to the program. The Eagles have set

new attendance record in Bender Arena twice during his tenure, the fi rst time occuring on February 7, 2009, when 1,177 fans saw the Eagles defeat Lehigh, 65-56. A year later on February 13, 2010, 1,291 spectators came out to Bender to watch American roll 82-47 past Colgate.

“We are pleased with the progress that Matt and his staff have made with our women’s basketball program over the last three years both on and off the court,” commented Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill. “He is a great teacher of the game and his passion for this team will translate into continued success for this program. We’re excited for what this season and the future will bring.”

Corkery was named to his current position on May 19, 2008 after serving as AU’s associate head coach during the 2007-08 campaign, which saw the Eagles earn the program’s fi rst-ever Patriot League regular season championship and berth in the WNIT. In 2007, he was elevated from assistant coach/recruiting coordinator to associate head coach. With the promotion, Corkery assumed additional responsibilities both on and off the court.
