YEAR 8 GIRLS NETBALL STATE CHAMPIONS
Congratulations to our Year 8 Girls Net-ball team who, in in Term 3, were crowned State Champions. The team was looking to add to their Year 7 State Championship and was made to work very hard throughout the state finals. The girls represented Wonthaggi Sec-ondary College extremely well and we are proud of their effort and achieve-ment.
YEAR 12 EXAMS
Year 12 classes are rapidly coming to an end and our students are busily prepar-ing themselves for their exams. We would like to take this opportunity to encourage all of the Year 12 students to apply their best efforts over the next few weeks of study and wish them all the best for their exams.

Alannah Dean, Teisha Damman and Noah Anderson all went to the Wonthaggi Town Hall for the regional final of the Legacy Public Speaking Competition on Tuesday 19th July. For our five minute prepared speeches, Alan-nah spoke about the Homeless, Teisha spoke about Dis-crimination, and Noah spoke about Social Justice and War. We all signed up for this to get better at public speaking. We met students from other schools who also did a good job. We thought it was a great experience and would like to do it again. We also did a two-minute impromptu speech around the topic ‘RAINY DAYS AND HAPPY DAYS’.
We would all like to thank Legacy and the Bass Coast Shire Council for supporting this event.
Legacy Public Speaking Competition
On the 29th of July, two Muslim women, named Aneesa and Saara, presented an inspirational workshop called ‘Beards and Burkas’, to our Year 9 Girls English class. These two women were originally from Syria and New Zea-land but now they live in Melbourne with their families and work for the Benevolence Society, educating the gen-eral public about Islam and supporting Muslims.
This presentation was included in our curriculum to give us a better understanding of what being a Muslim is like. It also helped us to relate to the novel we are studying in class at the moment, ‘Does my head look big in this?’ by Randa Abdel Fattah. We gained a better understanding of Muslim religion, culture and beliefs, which was interest-ing to learn about.
They taught us lots of new facts about the way they live their lives. We learnt that we share the same god as them although Muslims just refer to him as ‘Allah’. They told us that Muslims don’t just come from the Middle East; they can come from other countries and backgrounds as well. You don’t have to be brought up in the religion; an-yone has the choice to be Muslim. Only 2.5% of Australia’s population is Muslim.
We now have a better understanding of a Muslim’s daily life and the struggles they may go through each day. They talked to us about some situations they have witnessed or experienced, which were quite sad to hear. It made us realise how much Muslims are discriminated against. They told us that sometimes they feel like ripping their hijabs off when going to the supermarket because they get sick of constantly being stared at and discriminat-ed against because of their appearance. Just because they wear different clothing to most people doesn’t mean that anyone has the right to treat them disrespectfully.
They also discussed with us how they felt about terrorists giving them a bad reputation and how it makes them so sick and sad that terrorists can do what they do and still call themselves Muslims. They said that it also makes them really angry and hurt that people then associate all Muslims with terrorists.
The message we can all take from this experience is that Muslims are no different to anyone else; they just want to live a normal life without any prejudice and discrimination. Muslims deserve the same respect as everyone else.

During science week (Aug15-19) the Dudley campus science
team offered a variety of activities to engage students in dif-
ferent fields of science. Our first challenge was to reconstruct a
cow from the bare bones, this resulted in some fairly imagina-
tive impressions of what was probably a ”cowasaur” from the
Jurassic period. Our hovercraft was given a workout with
teams of students competing to cover the course in the short-
est time.
The exploding science fair attracted a lot of interest, with one
demonstration hot enough to smelt iron from iron oxide. On
the final day our students were challenged to create the tallest
tower using marsh mellows and spaghetti.

Book Week Dress Up Day
To celebrate Book Week, the students and staff at Dudley Campus celebrated various works of fiction by dressing up as their favourite characters. Everyone was there including the Scooby-Doo gang, Thor, The Joker and Harley Quinn, as well as Kylo Ren, Princess Leia and various characters from Alice in Wonderland. The staff dressed up as characters from Harry Potter.
Well done to everyone who dressed up and put so much time and effort into their costumes. Everyone looked fan-tastic and we all ended up having a great day.

Rowville is a sport scholarship school and won the Year 8 state title last year, so the boys knew that their task
would be a tough one. And so it proved. Every possession was earned and every disposal came with extreme pres-
sure. There certainly was no time to assess options and take extra time when kicking or handballing. Rowville
were strong and aggressive in the clearances and their ball movement was outstanding. Cooper Smith, Jarrod An-
derson, and Josh Schulz made sure that the opposition didn’t have it all their own way with some exceptional tack-
ling and pressure. Cooper’s penetration with his kicking and Josh’s excellent decision making and ball use were
particularly outstanding. Zac Reid again tried hard all day and managed to find plenty of the ball. Rohan Slade
tried hard up forward and Lincoln Brock was in and under when he came on in the second half. Kye Benson pro-
vided the midfield class and grunt until concussed late in the first half.
All players gave a good effort against a class outfit to finish a strong showing in the 2016 School Football competi-
tion. Everyone should be proud of their achievement to become the top Year 8 state school football team in
Gippsland. It has been a real pleasure and a privilege to coach such an outstanding group of young men.
The McBride Breakfast Club has been running since early Term 1 this
year and provides students on Tuesday mornings the opportunity to
eat breakfast before they start the day at school. Doors open after
8am and students are welcome to come in and grab a bite of toast
and fruit or a hot drink in room 25 (dining room). Students regularly
use the space in the morning to have a chat or finish off homework
in groups as well as have a bite to eat. On Monday the 15th of Au-
gust, a group of McBride students attended a Rotary Club of Phillip
Island and San Remo meeting to thank them for a donation to the
Breakfast Club. Students involved were Jack Mendes, Elijah Gemmill
and Daniel Freeman, they presented to the meeting and discussed
the program with the group of around 30 members as well as an-
swering a variety of questions. All students spoke very well and rep-
resented the College brilliantly on the night. Not only did they pre-
sent to the meeting but also had a
delicious meal at the RSL in Cowes
also supplied by Rotary.

coming over and introducing the stu-
dent leaders on the night. We are
looking forward to the program contin-
uing bigger and better in 2017 and a
huge thank you to the Rotary Club of
Phillip Island and San Remo once
again.

Year 9 MIPS Day - Tuesday August 30
As part of the Year 9 Managed Individual Pathways program, all Year 9 students have been writing resumes and
job applications as well as studying interview techniques.
On August 30, all students attended a mock job interview at a business in Wonthaggi. Venues for the program this
year included Bunnings, Woolworths, Wonthaggi Newsagents, Big W, Coles, Wonthaggi Library, Wonthaggi Police
station, Bass Coast Shire Offices, Target, Bendigo Bank and the NAB. All students had prepared themselves well
and demonstrated a sound understanding of the process of applying for an advertised position and then attending
a formal interview. The feedback from those involved from the business community was outstanding and extreme-
ly complementary of our students’ preparation and professional presentation.
Other aspects of the day included course counselling at the Wonthaggi Town Hall with the College Principal team
and other McBride campus staff. Students were able to ask questions related to their subject pathways and career
directions.
At the Wonthaggi Arts Centre throughout the morning, students were presented with an array of speakers in the
Career Snapshot component of the day. Several professional people spoke for ten minutes at a time throughout
the morning on their chosen career pathways. All speakers were informative and enjoyable and provided students
with glimpses of various career choices and opportunities.
The Lions Club cooked up a delicious BBQ lunch for students and staff and, because we were blessed with great
weather, we sat in the sun to enjoy McBride campus as part of their transition process.
Our keynote speaker was Beau Vernon who spoke to all students at the Arts Centre after lunch on resilience. His
presentation was riveting.
It is a delight to work with such motivated and organised students who take great pride in themselves and their
various individual pursuits. Thanks very much to all staff who assisted with the various aspects of the day includ-
ing, interviewing, course counselling, food preparation, supervision, training of students for their interviews and
application writing. Well done! It was a huge and successful day and well worth the effort.
Spelling Bee
During Literacy and Numeracy Week, 30 students from Years 7-9 competed in the annual Wonthaggi Spelling Bee.
The crowd was on the edge of their seats as competitors dazzled the audience with their spelling prowess. Stu-
dents, both spellers and spectators, should be commended for their efforts and behaviour.
Overall, the day was a great success
and thank-you to all the students and
staff involved.

South Eastern Zone Clay Target Competition
On 4th August 14 students from across both cam-
puses travelled to Frankston Australia Clay Target
Club to compete in the South Eastern zone competi-
tion. Wonthaggi was second overall in the teams
event by 1 target. Students represented the school
extremely well and were competitive in a very
strong field. Dakota Suckling performed well in the
junior girl category finishing up third in an exciting
shoot off. Tom Eden shot competitively as always
and was calm in the shoot off finishing second in
the senior boys category.
Congratulations to both students who have now
qualified to go on and shoot at the Victorian School
Student's finale in Bendigo on the 5th of September.
The school wishes you both success in the upcoming competition.

HOCKEY PLAYERS, PARENTS AND FANS
Gippsland Bulls Hockey Club will be running a Term 4 hockey competition at Wonthaggi Secondary College, Dudley Campus, on Fridays from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
Starting October 7, finishing on Friday 9th December.
Costs will be $15 for ‘summer registration' with Hockey Victoria (i.e. insurance) plus $20 to cover the venue hire. If you are already registered with Hockey Victoria for 2016, you don’t need to pay the rego again. (We can do the paperwork when we see you on Friday.)
New players are always welcome - feel free to bring along a friend.
