And, due to the generosity of the Woodside Herald , a number of our neighborhood’s children were able to share in the fun and excitement of the circus. Because of the Herald’s assistance in providing (continued on page 5) vouchers, approximately thirty at- tendees from Cub Scout Pack 390 and their families enjoyed two hours of daredevil motorcycling stunts, death-defying trapeze art- ists, clowns just clowning around, not so pesky pachyderms and so much more. Pastor Margetson of Sunnyside Reform said “Joe really welcomed me to Sunnyside in 2009,” confiding in him his own experiences here. Joe was a member of the “Fab Five,” with clergymen Jon Storck, Josh Hallman, and Brian Dowd, who worked together to create events for the community (In another ripple in the religious waters of Sunnyside, Pastor Dowd of Queen of Angels had heart surgery, but was back to celebrate Easter to a relievedparish). But the luncheon was generally upbeat, and President Katz’s visit buoyed the everyone’s mood. FIRST CLASS FREE

LEASE TO LAGUARDIA

Governor Andrew M. Cuomoannounced that the comprehensiveredesign of LaGuardia Airport hastaken a major step forward, with acrucial approval vote by the PortAuthority of New York and NewJersey. The vote approves a leasewith LaGuardia Gateway Partnersto build and operate a new state-of-the-art Terminal B, with a centralhall and concourse that will, for thefirst time, create a unified airport aswell as the site for an air trainstation. The lease clears the wayfor the first phase of the Governor’sredesign plan, which will ultimatelytransform the aging facility into aworld-class transportation hub, equipped for the challenges anddemands of 21st century travel anddeserving of the state of New York.

The design and constructioncost of the project amounts to $4billion – two-thirds of which isfinanced by private funds and ex-isting passenger fees. Construc-tion will begin shortly, with sig-nificant completion of portions ofthe airport opening in 39 monthsafter the start of construction.

“This vote marks a critical stepforward in our effort to overhaulLaGuardia Airport,” said Gover-nor Cuomo. “Our plan will funda-mentally transform LaGuardia –replacing what is now an outdatedand poorly designed complex withthe world-class airport New York

has always deserved. This repre-sents a major milestone for theproject – the first of many – and Ilook forward to seeing construc-tion begin later this year.”

The redesign plan will com-pletely rebuild Terminal B, andconstruct a central hall and con-necting concourse that will turn theairport into a single, unified mainterminal with expanded transporta-tion access, significantly increasedtaxiway space and best-in-classpassenger amenities. The designreflects the recommendations fromthe Governor’s Airport AdvisoryPanel, including the new light-filledCentral Entry Hall, which will con-nect Terminals B and C and unifythe airport for the first time. Bymoving the terminal closer to theGrand Central Parkway, it will in-crease airport taxiways and reduceairport ground delays. In additionto the new terminal and CentralHall, LGP will also construct newroads, utilities, runway improve-ments, a new West Parking Garageand other supporting infrastructure.

Under an innovative public-

private partnership, two-thirds ofthe $4 billion design and con-struction cost will be paid for byprivate financing and existing pas-senger fees. A private consortium,LaGuardia Gateway Partners, willdesign, build, operate and main-tain the facility. The risk of costoverruns or schedule delays in theLaGuardia project will be trans-ferred from the Port Authority toLGP, a private airport developerselected and approved in May2015 by the Port Authority Boardafter a competitive request-for-proposals process.

LaGuardia’s modernizationwill be a major economic boon forthe region, generating $1.3 billionin wages and $5.2 billion in re-gional economic activity. Consis-tent with Governor Cuomo’s na-tion-leading goal of 30 percent par-ticipation of Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises, con-struction of the new Terminal Bproject will provide extensive eco-nomic opportunities for MWBEcontractors in the Borough ofQueens and the region.

FIRST FRIDAYS ONAPRIL FOOL’S DAY

by Peter Ross

April 1st may be April Fool’s Day but there is no joking aroundregarding the next Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside’s “First Fridays”monthly event. This month will see the local fundraising mixerbeing held at Malingo Restaurant and Bar, located at 43-16 QueensBoulevard in Sunnyside, from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Join your fellowSunnysiders, and those from beyond the neighborhood, as theyshare good times, a bite to eat and drink, and most importantlygather to help raise funds and non-perishable food items to supportthe local food pantry at St. Teresa’s Church, which assists aroundeighty families per week who are dealing with food insecurity. Itis believed there may also be some musical entertainment at theevent this month, courtesy of none other than Kiwanis’s duo of“Mike and Mike” (let’s hope this is not just an April Fool’s joke!).For our neighbors who may have a time challenge and are not ableto attend the event, but would like to show their support, pleasevisit www.sunnysidefirstfridays.org to make a contribution to thecause. All monies raised again go directly to the food pantry. Hopeto see you there for the “Madness at Malingo!” this April Fool’sDay (no kidding, your presence is desired).

WOODSIDE YOUTHEXTEND OPERATIONS

As another week of service to this entire zip code pressed aheadto neighboring ones, the sense of both accomplishment on thatachievement and worries over the vastness of the area of theirwork was best summed up by Tania Singh, 7th grade student at IS126, observing “We’re doing all sorts of things in Woodside,Sunnyside and Elmhurst, and it takes time to get to the place we’llbe working, but I’m proud of what we’ve done.”

The youth began to extend the western border of their missionon Thursday, March 24, as they crossed Queens Boulevard andarrived on the south side at 48th Street, a location made moreintriguing as, depending upon who one asks, it is either Sunnysideor Woodside. Given the zip code places it squarely in theWoodside area, the determination by the youth to finish whatthey’ve started years prior was only a matter of where to begin.

This advance unit removed more graffiti and performed therepainting at that position, then transited to Laurel Hill Boulevardat 48th Street for more of the same, all the while sizing up how theycould absorb more of this isolated enclave into their area ofoperations in the near future.

Saturday, March 26, a large assembly of youth and missionariesfrom The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dividedthemselves into two task-oriented teams, one arriving at 57th Streetand Roosevelt Avenue, the other at Jacobus Street near 76th Streetand Queens Boulevard, to perform cleaning and graffiti removal atboth sites, yet with the confidence that they could separate them-selves and fulfill their assignments without any concern.

Meanwhile, the afternoon brought another gathering of youthdrawn from the small hours to continue building on the workcompleted on March 24, cleaning and removing more graffitialong Laurel Hill Boulevard from 58th to 48th Streets, each itemrehabilitated leading to greater expectations that they could pro-ceed even farther west with ease.

A smaller group of youth made themselves available forcleaning and graffiti removal work on Tuesday, March 29,2016, between 58th and 72nd Streets along Woodside Avenue, with transit points at 61st Street & Roosevelt Avenue, TrimbleRoad and Hicks Drive, rounding out a weekend of actualtriumphs in both depth and scale of their work, which has noapparent second or equal.

Allison Ortiz, 7th grade student at St. Sebastian’s School, inhaving become an integral part of this extraordinary comingtogether of youth, reflected on the work she and the otherscompleted over many long hours of service, asserting “Well, I wastired, then my energy level comes up as the work moves ahead, andyou know you’ve done something that many don’t want to do.”

ObituaryFor Alice

and died in Sunnyside it was Alicewho suggested that I start a memo-rial.

Father Joseph Jerome of theAll Saints Church, who first sug-gested we hold a candlelight vigilin his churchyard. He also told meto speak to someone at CathyNolan’s office. That person wasAlice Cardona. Ms. Cardona wasa life-long jazz fan. When I toldher that I had recently learned thatBix lived and died in our neighbor-hood and 2001 was the 70th anni-versary of his death, it was Alicewho asked Assemblywomen Nolanto get involved. It was Alice, alongwith Diane Ballak, who found ahorn player to perform. It wasAlice who helped me promote theoriginal event. Alice also attendedthat first memorial. Alice contin-ued to attend every annual “BixSunnyside Memorial” until shebecame too ill to attend. Alicealways gave me her assistance anddonated her wisdom. In return Iwent to every event of her’s thatshe invited me to.

I am glad to see the street where

she lived is now named after her.Because she was very modest, Iimage Alice looking at that sign, smiling and saying, “I’m not spe-cial. I don’t deserve this.” How-ever, Alice Cardona was a veryspecial lady who helped many, many people.

Just talking with Alice was aneducation experience. Over theyears my wife, Aida, and myselfbecame very good friends withAlice. Alice’s sister, Diana Cruz, informed us, that having spent timewith her one day before her death,we were her very last visitors. Likemany people who knew her, westill miss Alice very much.

Dear Editor,I was very surprised, and

pleased, to read in the “WoodsideHerald” that part of 56th Streethas been renamed “AliceCardona Way”.

Alice was a lovely woman who,in addition to all her political activ-ism, was very involved in manyWoodside and Sunnyside events. Not many people realize that Alicewas very instrumental with the cre-ation of the annual “BixBeiderbecke Sunnyside MemorialConcert”. When, back in 2001, Ilearned that legendary jazz musi-cian Bix Beiderbecke had lived
