HOLY TOLEDO!6TH HONOREE PICKED

by Patricia Dorfman

Angel Gil Orrios has been se-lected as the 2016 Luke AdamsSunnysider of the Year, to benamed at the annual award gala, again held at Tangra Restaurant onTuesday, November 3rd. OguzhanTuran, the 2015 honoree, will be-stow the award to Orrios.

Orrios is the Artistic/Execu-tive Director of the Thalia SpanishTheatre, and he and thegroundbreaking theatre have ironi-cally often received more attentionoutside of Sunnyside. Our electedofficials are strong supporters ofthe Thalia, but many among us donot realize the treasure onGreenpoint Avenue where wecould be taking a seeing an origi-nal play for the first time in simul-taneous English and Spanish, ortaking an affordable tango class.

The Spanish-born Orrios is aninternationally renowned director, set and lighting designer, film-maker, reporter, translator, writerand producer, all bundled into oneenergetic, compassionate, andcharismatic fellow, and becomingeach day more of a household namein Sunnyside.

Rigoberto Cardoso, presidentof the Chamber, invited him torun for the Sunnyside Chamberboard, and reports, “Angel (pro-nounced oh-hel) is modest. Hesaid he was happy to be askedand acknowledged. He immedi-ately offered a $5 discount toChamber members and askedhow he could help local busi-ness.” Orrios and the Thalia haveheld free summer classes for chil-dren and performances forSunnysiders for 20 years.

Orrios has created over 150productions in the past 40 years invenues in France, Spain, SouthAmerica and the US, includingLincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.He was artistic director of the RoyalTheater of Spain. He has been hon-ored by Mayor Bloomberg, Ma-jority Leader Van Bramer, almostyearly by Hispanic Organizationof Latino Actors, and other US-based recognition, but he is morewidely recognized internationallyfor his pioneering dramatic work, including the Silver Medal of theFrench Academie des Arts-Sci-ences-Lettres.

Normally, such a person sonoted, is not the sort would expectto be picked for the more locallybased community service award.

“But a lot of us did not really knowwho he was or what he has beendoing here for others, “ said MannyGomez, president of SunnysideArtists and Chamber VP, whonominated him for the honor. “Weneed to acknowledge his local con-tributions not only for his sake butfor ours!”

Orrios has received an MFAin Spain, and has taught and lec-tured at Harvard University, NewYork University, Columbia Uni-versity, City University, and cul-tural centers all over the world. He is married to actress SoledadLopez, whom Angel says helpedhis career more than any other, and they have two children,Sebastian and Mariana, whomthey adopted from Guatemala.

As 2014 Luke AdamsSunnysider of the Year DonaldMcCallian put it, “No one is morequalified that Angel Gil Orrios. Not only has he given of himself tolocal children and causes, he hashelped our Sunnyside businessesand reputation! There is a line oflimos down Greenpoint withpeople who come to see his theaterand opera. Sometimes locals passby and we forget or do not realizethe treasure we have right here.”

The Luke Adams Sunnysiderof the Year is co-presented bySunnyside Chamber of Commerceand Sunnyside Artists and beganwhen Luke Adams, past Chamberleader, reluctantly accepted theeponymous honor for communityservice in 2011.

The award is given without re-gard to fundraising, politics or af-filiation and recipients may live orwork in the area. Last year, LukeAdams shocked the communitywhen he passed away a week afterthe ceremony, in which he seemedin relative good health.

Past recipients other thanAdams were Father Brian P.Dowd, Pastor of Queen of An-gels Church, Frances Schmidt,Lions Club and Community Vol-unteer, Donald McCallian, Presi-dent, United Forties, 108 Coun-cil, and Oguzhan Turan, VP,Turkish Cultural Center, Queens. The nominating committee con-sists of all living past recipients, the boards of Sunnyside Cham-ber of Commerce and SunnysideArtists, and all and both cast finalvotes on the nominees.

EYESORE INWOODSIDE

Dear Editor,I am writing this letter to

call attention to a building, which is fast becoming a neigh-

borhood eyesore. At one time abeautiful Greek OrthodoxChurch stood at the corner of44th Street and 48th Avenue inWoodside. The property hassince been sold with the inten-tion of building a Laundromatthere. The structure was put upin a timely fashion, but con-struction abruptly stopped andnow the building is dormant.

It has become an open in-vitation to graffiti artists whohave scribbled all over thewalls. In addition, people havetaken to dumping garbage andlittering on the sidewalk infront of the building. An oldrusty bicycle was recentlyspotted chained to the fenceoutside as well.

Dumping garbage there is aviolation of the city healthcodes. Let’s find out when thisproperty will be completed andmaintained. It has become anunpleasant quality of life forresidents who live on an other-wise lovely block.

Sincerely,Skandi Khan,

Woodside

LIC ARTIST’S WORK SHOWCASED

by Sharon Cadiz

Applebee’s is featuring the work of artist Eddie Cadiz who has captured the diversity andcivic pride of his beloved Astoria and Long Island City in photographs that are on displayat the restaurant on 35th Avenue. Residents and members of the fire department, police, alongwith parks and other points of interest have been presented in mounted reliefs depictingfamiliar community scenes. Other work by the artist can also be viewed at the Capital OneBank on 32nd Street and Broadway and at the Public Library on Steinway & Broadway.

Thus bringing an end to a summer wheretheir work was occurring almost to the tuneof daily, and on Saturday, September 12,this work led the youth to the remainingstreets they had not visited in their graffitiremoval and repainting efforts.

Many of the youth were reticent about theproject coming to an end, but were beingreminded often that the maintaining of thevast operational area of an entire zip codewould pose even greater challenges, and withthe greening and cleaning operations becom-ing more of a focal point during the colder

seasons, their spirits renewed, with MichaelMaye, 8th grade student at St. Sebastian andanother leader among leaders asserting “We’llalways find something to do.”

Their work weaved up and down crossstreets from 69th and 73rd Streets, ultimatelyhaving them facing the LIRR elevated trainline to their east, and with the various indi-vidual teams comprising missionaries fromthe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daySaints, and the youth of the various schoolsscattered over many blocks, it seemed theirother goal was exploring some of the 19th

century homes and relative quiet of the area, with Zak Pan, 9th grade at Francis LewisHigh School observing at the corner of 70Street and 50 Avenue “Look, there’s a wellpump in that garden. Who’d ever think therewas a well in Woodside!”
