1 World Trade Integrated Trade Solution2 Euromonitor Passport3 IMA Asia Asia Forecast Book Q3 2017 Forecasts to 2022 (Japan)

PROFILE AREA: 377,972 square kilometres

POPULATION: approximately 127 million

LANGUAGE: Japanese

CLIMATE: Japan has four distinct seasons with a climate ranging from subarctic in the north to subtropical in the south.

ECONOMY: The Japanese economy is improving at a modest pace. Real GDP will grow by 1.1% in 2018 after gains of 1.5% in 2017. At real prices, private final consumption rose by 0.9% in 2017 and it will increase by 1.0% in 2018.

CURRENCY: Japanese Yen ($100 USD to ¥10,554.84 JPY) as of 28 March 2018.

Japan remains an attractive market for Australian wool. After a series of economic setbacks, the consumption of fashion and luxury goods is steady, and Japan still represents one of the top markets for wool product, with a potential luxury market size of 80 million consumers.

Japan’s 127 million people are acknowledged for their importance in luxury goods consumption, and their understanding of quality, with the country also a popular shopping destination for luxury Chinese consumers. Wool continues to be an attractive proposition based on population, climate and affluence.

Increasingly, foreign brands are influencing domestic trends even in the more conservative markets. In 2017, the European Union and Japan struck a political agreement to enable a free-trade pact, which is expected to benefit the apparel and sportswear sectors. The deal paves the way for tariff-free trade between two of the world’s biggest economic areas, and should benefit a number of sectors including fashion.

Japan has a strong export market for trade in textiles and clothing, with its key buyer markets being China, Vietnam and the USA1.

Japan’s real GDP will grow by 1.1% in 2018 after gains of 1.5% in 2017. Consumer expenditure per capita correlates with this, with disposable income increasing by 0.9% in 2017. Manufacturing contributes an estimated 18.3% of GDP to Japan’s economy.

This sector employs 17.6% of the workforce2. Manufacturing is forecast, for the 2015-2020 year-period, to remain relatively stable. Japan is known to have high-quality manufacturing facilities3.

While apparel production has largely shifted to South-East Asia, Japan still presents a large variety of wool weaving and knitting factories that offer high-quality, creative and innovative products ranging from heavy garbardines to luxury hand-finished multi-layer wovens.

The Bishu area in particular, situated near the major city of Nagoya about 1.5 hours away west of Tokyo by bullet train, hosts a large concentration of mills. The fruit of strong expansion during the late 19th Century, the region - often compared to the Biella area in Italy or to Huddersfield in the United Kingdom - retains a unique craftsmanship heritage that attracts buyers and designers from across the world.

Japan’s major strengths, which make it a viable sourcing destination for textiles and garments, are:

• Political and social stability

• Long-standing, well-established, high quality textile manufacturing industry and infrastructure

• Large skilled workforce

• Trade access: Japan has 24 FTAs
