No sé si una imatge val més que mil paraules. Només puc assegurar que la fotografia -sigui quina sigui la seva motivació, objectiu o finali-tat- és, sense cap mena de dubte, un llenguatge. I, com a llenguatge, serveix per transmetre idees, des de les més elevades fins a les més mundanes. La seva particularitat, respecte al llenguatge oral o escrit, és que té més protagonistes: el subjecte retratat, sense el qual la imat-ge no existiria, el ‘lector’, que la mira, la interpreta segons una sèrie de valors, expectatives i condicionants culturals i, com a intermediari, el fotògraf, que acciona el disparador i, amb aixó, selecciona un moment, un escenari d’entre els infinits possibles.

És aquest un llenguatge de paraules fetes de llum, en el que tanta importància té qui les pronuncia com qui les escolta, així com el mitjà físic en es fixen. Així, aquesta selecció no és més que el pas necessari per a completar el procès natural d’aquestes imatges, sense el qual el fet de fotografiar no tindria sentit.

No sé si una imagen vale más que mil palabras. Sólo puedo asegurar que

la fotografía -cualquiera que sea su motivación, objetivo o finalidad- es,

sin lugar a dudas, un lenguaje. Y, como lenguaje, sirve para transmitir

ideas, desde las más elevadas hasta las más mundanas. Su particularidad,

respecto al lenguaje oral o escrito, es que tiene más protagonistas: el

sujeto retratado, sin el que la imagen no existiría, el ‘lector’, que la mira,

la interpreta según una serie de valores, expectativas y condicionantes

culturales y, como intermediario, el fotógrafo, que acciona el disparador

y, con ello, selecciona un momento, un escenario de entre los infinitos

posibles.

Es este un lenguaje de palabras hechas de luz, en el que tanta importan-

cia tiene quien las pronuncia como quien las escucha, así como el medio

físico en que se fijan. Así, esta selección no es más que el paso necesario

para completar el proceso natural de estas imagenes, sin el que el hecho

de fotografiar no tendria sentido.


I don’t know if a picture is worth a thousand words. I can only make sure that photography -whatever its motivation, objective or purpose- is, certainly, a language. And, as language, is used to convey ideas, from the highest to the more mundane. Its uniqueness, compared to oral or written language, is that it has more players: the subject portrayed, without which the image doesn’t exist, the ‘reader’, who looks at it, who construes it ac-cording to a range of values, expectations and cultural constraints and, as an intermediary, the photographer, which releases the shutter and, thereby, selects a moment, a scene among the infinite possible.

Is this a language of words made of light, where both speaker and listener are equally important, as well as the physical media in which they are fixed. Thus, this selection is just the necessary step to complete the natural process of these images, without which the fact of photographing made no sense.
