The Ample Sample Design Contest asked for innovative designs incorporating carpet samples. Designs were judged upon criteria of: aesthetics, purpose, ease of creation, creativity, durability, number/ volume of carpet sample used.

Finalists were promoted by Bentley Prince Street, Floor Focus magazine and Tricycle at NeoCon World's Trade Fair 2007, in Chicago's Merchandise Mart.

RUGBURM uses recycled objects from design firms. Rolling the carpet sample tiles to different diameters yields different comfort densities. Ergonometrics determines how to locate the rolled tiles. Tying the tiles and cardboard tubes like a "popcorn string" provides stability and comfort.

Japan Studio Final | student work

This was the final project for SCI-Arc’s semester in Japan in 2009. As the cummulation of a four month cultural emersion, the task was to design a Bunraku theater to be situated along the Dotombori River in Osaka, Japan.

This building was designed to breathe new life into the art of Bunraku (文楽 ). When attepmting to update or reinterpret something as long standing as Bunraku, I felt that to simply replace the old traditions would not be the correct solution. I saw this project as an opportunity for new and old to coexist. I sought to create a space for the gradual evolution of bunraku to spring up from traditional roots. I created a building that could house sevral modern auxillary theaters in addition to one traditional one, much like a tea house that contains multiple tea rooms.

One key feature of these new theaters would be the reconception of the backdrop. I oriented the auxillary theaters so that they could frame different views like the shakkei (借景) of the chaniwa (茶庭). The experience of traveling through garden spaces placed between the theaters would allow visitors to leave the outside behind them and prepare to watch the performances. The real life backdrops both take advantage of our unique site and serve to reconnect the theatrical performance with reality and the present.

The concept of sociology shaping architecture, has always fascinated me. Rather than basing my thesis explorations on a series of historical case studies, I chose to look at a more contemporary example of how people relate to one another and attempted to design a system for translating this into a three-dimensional form. I decided to take a clue from online networking.

If sociology is the study of how people inter-relate, then Sociological space is the place where these interactions occur. The big question is: can we script sociological space?

In an urban setting, the relationship between neighbors is intensified due to their close proximity. Traditional high density housing approaches all but ignore the potential factors of proximity, making it a conflictual liability instead of the pleasurable form of human connection it could, and should, be.

What concerns me most is that people, and the way they relate to each other, can often be defined solely, spatially. For example, “my upstairs neighbor” or “that man down the hall.” There often is no real community feeling amongst them. Interestingly, proximity-based relationships are increasingly apparent in the organization of online social networks. What i”m proposing is that perhaps if you allow established friendship circles to exist within a space first, you could create an architecture to house it.

The architectureal strategy is to generate a series of tools that translate user input into drivers of a live model. This is the benefit of the digital media of social networking in conjunction with the technology of parametric design. With a construction system that combines on-site pre-cast structurally integral modules and overlapping construction phases, a digitally conceptualized building can be constructed in a short time frame.
