August workshop with Nancy Brown had laughter, tracing, and concentrated hand sewing. Buddy the Dog and George the Labrador required much thought and wandering around to see what others had in their fabric displays. The point of this whole workshop was to see things in different colors and perspective as well as the uniqueness of non-perfection. We held fabric at arm’s

length, squinted, and found the altered texture appearance. The fabric design you thought wouldn’t

work, worked. What was feathers became fur; an amazing discovery to some of us. The whole project was

an eye opener and a learning experience.

Nancy talked about the pros and cons of thread. The sewer/quilter has to make choices and decisions. There are so many kinds of threads that are available from fiber content, weight, spinning, texture and the end use that it

can boggle the mind.

Vivian and Kathy from the South Bay Quilting Guild know Nancy and joined us for the workshop.

We all enjoyed a respite and break with the surprise and delightful appearance of Dean Lund with two dogs.

2009 Opportunity Quilt Sonia Das

Many thanks to Betsy Morgon for volunteering to help with the Quilt at meetings and for storing the Quilt in-between events. Sales of the 2009 Opportunity Quilt tickets are underway and we are actually printing additional tickets! The Underground Railroad

Quilt had its public debut at the International Quilt Festival and was well received. Since the drawing for the quilt is only a few months away (December 10, 2009), we are busy organizing dates and sites for the quilt to be displayed. We will also be contacting

QBS members who belong to other guilds to see if they can help by selling tickets at those guilds. As always, we are asking the membership to take envelopes of tickets to sell. Please see Betsy Morgon at the meeting if you would like to pick up your tickets.

Thank you in advance for helping your guild.

QBS ‘09 Annual Quilt Retreat Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center

www.vinalestonnac.com Cat Harris

Well, the retreat has come and gone, and my thanks to everyone who came and participated in the games and fun, and particularly the brown bag challenge. Our winner is Regina Lozano, who won the $50 gift certificate. She absolutely knocked everyone's socks off with her Quilter by Day, Diva by Night topsy-turvy doll. It's hard to describe, but she flipped it from one end to another to get two totally different looks -- humble quilter with patchwork skirt to racy diva in black satin. We were all impressed. And there really should have been runners-up, because there were several that were very close. Look for pictures in the newsletter or on the website soon. My compliments to all you talented, clever people.

Our president, Sonia, won the “guess how many Mike and Ike’s are in the jar” prize, which we referred to as a "boatload" of fat quarters generously donated by Scott's Sew 'n Vac. And I can't thank Bunney Hutch enough (and our girl Angela) for their wonderful donations. Angela was responsible for the fat quarter and the charm squares in each gift bag, along with lots of other prizes. It really made a difference. Thanks Angela, Amber, and Jean-Marie. And props to Mary Carbajal (aka "Prize Patrol") for her saucy humor while handing out presents and announcing the games. Thank you Kay Zellmer and Randy Miller for lots of back-up, and to Darlene Fong for sending vendor donation letters. And I definitely thank the vodka fairies -- you know who you are.

The white elephant exchange was fun; it had a little different twist as we played the right-left game and passed the presents back and forth as those words were heard in a little ditty about Randy Miller, Sonia, and a carload of quilters venturing about town. Everyone came out for the ice cream social on the patio... nothing like ice cream sundaes, with your choices of toppings on a hot Saturday night. And the treasure hunt at the Quilters' Coop in Old Town Temecula was great fun... we received a pen and a fat eighth from the owner when we arrived, and then she had us search through the store for the five hidden thimbles. Thimble finders received a cute little gift... and we all received a 10% discount on our purchases. Our thanks to the owner for showing us a fun time.

So start thinking about next year now... the retreat will probably be in August, with Ann Leibovitz organizing it, but she'll be telling you all about that. Just hold the thought for August 2010 and don't get left out!

One final note: Ann Leibovitz ended up with an extra ruler, so if you're missing one, contact her and she'll bring it to the guild meeting.

Thanks all, Cat

Intraguild Report for March 2009 Kayleen Leone

The Guild Basket is currently taking orders for cardigan sweatshirts with our embroidered logo. Depending on the quantity we purchase the cost is expected to be around $30 to $35. We require a deposit of $20 to accept your order. Final payment will be due upon delivery. Contact Brandi Kelly-Contreras at 714/374-1782 or email her at: [email protected].

We have a challenge for everyone participating in this year’s block of the month quilt, Kaleidoscope of Kolor. We’ve selected the general meeting in May 2010 as the Show and Tell month for everyone to display his or her quilt. It will be lots of fun to see how similar or dissimilar the quilts will be. So, if you are participating in the BOM program don’t procrastinate. Get your quilt finished in time for a group Show and Tell. We’re also looking at several options for a BOM quilt program for 2010.

2010 Opportunity Quilt Kasey Egelus and Carol Jarado

The fabric has been selected and there will be a workshop on September 5, 2009 at Scott’s Sew and Vac, LTD. from noon to midnight. We will work on the blocks until Sew So Late starts. For those who want to keep on working, we’ll continue

during Sew So Late. We have a date scheduled with the church and are hoping that there will be enough volunteers to get the top done in one day. The appliqué on

the sides and bottom has been assigned to appliqué volunteers so this just leaves the piecing in the center. The top needs to be done by the end of September so it can

be quilted in October, then postcards and tickets printed. If we can stick to this timeline we will be ready to show the quilt and sell tickets in January. We are also taking suggestions for names for the quilt. You can phone or e-mail Kasey at the following if you have any suggestions for names, sign-up to piece the quilt on

September 5th, would like to volunteer for taking the quilt to other guilds or quilt shows: (H) 562-404-3976, (w) 323-586-6464 (both numbers have voice mail), [email protected]

President’s Corner Sonia Das

I hope all of you enjoy the ice cream social and the presentation by The Batty Lady this month. I shall not be there because I will be in San Diego for the State Bar Convention taking continuing education classes.

The August Retreat in Temecula was a wonderful weekend and we all had a great time getting to know fellow quilters better, being inspired by beautiful projects and fabrics, stuffing our faces (especially with the plethora of munchies and the ice cream social), winning prizes, going shopping in addition to actually quilting. Many, many thanks to Cat Harris and her friends for organizing a marvelous retreat!

The Young Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Corona came to QBS in August and received donations in memory of Ruth Padilla. Renee Noflin, Guild Founder, spoke about the guild and three of the children (who are in Young Piecemakers) showed some of their quilts. They received $355 from guild members in addition to 10 boxes of fabric donated from Ruth’s estate and Community Relations of QBS. A huge basket of books and quilting notions from Ruth’s estate was also donated.

Quilters were also extremely generous with school supply donations. Local charities were delighted to receive the huge boxes of supplies for children in need.

September is also the month for the Community Relations workshop. All workshop participants will get free patterns for attending and free fabric will be available for making philanthropic quilts. Please come and spend the day for a worthwhile cause.

See you all in October!

If you have questions or concerns, please call me at 562-429-4477 or email me at [email protected]. El Tigre

Community Relations Randy Miller

This is going to be a big month for Community Relations. We will be having our annual workshop on Saturday, September 12 at 9:00 a.m. The workshop will be held at the Church in the regular “workshop” room. We will have kits available as well as fabric and patterns for those who prefer to choose their own. As in years past, we will have a pattern sign-up sheet and we will eMail patterns to anyone who wishes to have them for their own.

Edie Harbour, from La Mirada High School, will be visiting our September meeting and is bringing some of her students. We will be presenting them with the sewing notions and fabric that we have collected for their use. If you have something to bring for the school, please bring it to the September guild meeting.

Sonia and I sorted out all the donated school supplies and filled six 16” x 16” x 16” cartons to the top. We delivered two cartons each to For the Child, New Life Beginnings, and The Long Beach Women’s Shelter. We also took five quilts to For the Child and will be taking some quilts to New Life Beginnings.

Because of the workshop on September 12, we will not be meeting at the Bunney Hutch this month.

Thanks to everyone for all the donations.

Good Neighbor Festival and Family Picnic 2009 Sonia Das

On Saturday, September 26, 2009, the City of Long Beach 5th Council District will hold the 3rd Annual Good Neighbor Festival and Family Picnic at El Dorado Park Community Center (Studebaker and Willow) from 10am to 3pm.

In 2008, Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske honored QBS with the Good Neighbor Award for its philanthropic work. QBS was nominated again in 2009.

QBS has been asked to participate in the festival again this year; we will have a table displaying our Opportunity Quilt for 2009 as well as other quilts. We will be selling Opportunity Quilt tickets and distributing guild brochures. Other community groups will be present with food and entertainment available to enjoy.

QBS needs volunteers at this event to sell tickets, distribute brochures and flyers in addition to promoting the guild in general. If you can spare a couple of hours helping out QBS at the festival, please contact Sonia at 562-42-4477 or [email protected].

Quilt Guild Bingo Quilter Cathy Busch provided this “quilty” version of bingo to Fons & Porter and they published it in their September/October 2006 issue.

We will be playing this game at our December meeting so start making your “bingo” quilt blocks now. These blocks will be your “bingo” cards

so make a lot - the more you make, the better your odds at winning. Feelers have been put out to see if the guild’s button supply is still

around but if we can’t locate it, you will also need to bring your own buttons to use as markers. Just make blocks; they will be turned in to

Randy after the game. Community Relations will be joining them into quilts for donations or setting up kits.

Game Card Instructions Each fabric must be chosen from one of the following categories: batik, holiday, dot, leaf, floral, metallic, geometric, novelty, heart, paisley, plaid, solid, star, stripe, or 30’s. Use black for the center square. Each fabric can represent only one category - in other

words, use 25 unique fabrics, no duplicates. Materials for 1 card (10 1/2 inches)

5 - 2 1/2” squares assorted yellow and orange prints 5 - 2 1/2” squares assorted red prints 5 - 2 1/2” squares assorted blue prints 5 - 2 1/2” squares assorted green prints 4 - 2 1/2” squares assorted pink and purple prints 1 - 2 1/2” square black print/solid

Block Assembly 1. Referring to the sample, join 5 yellow/orange

print squares to make 1 column. In the same manner, make 1 red, 1 blue, and 1 green column.

2. Join 2 pink/purple squares. Make 2 pairs. Join one pair to each side of the black square.

3. Join columns, placing pink/purple row in the center to complete one Bingo Game Card block.
