Render Unto Caesar

How many times have we heard the expression, “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and render unto God that which is God’s”? Today’s Gospel gives us the origin of that phrase. The Pharisees, who have been attempting to trap Jesus for some time, have joined forces with some of their opponents, the Herodians, to pose a tricky question: Is it lawful to pay the census tax? Since the Pharisees didn’t believe it was lawful and the Herodians did, no matter what Jesus answered, someone was bound to be angered. Jesus’ answer shows his acumen and wisdom. Instead of giving a direct reply, he first calls out the Pharisees for trying to trap him. He understands their motive is to find a reason to kill him, and he lets them know that he recognizes that. Then he very carefully gives the reply we are familiar with, saying that some things belong to God and some things belong to Caesar. It is our responsibility to see the difference and respond accordingly. This can be quite the challenge for us who live today in an increasingly secularized world. Many want to see how far they can push the limits and have us render unto Caesar that which belongs rightly to God. We must be ready for the test and continue to render unto God that which is God’s while still being actively engaged in the secular domain with the good news of the Gospel. Not an easy task by any means, and one that can be accomplished only with the grace of God himself.

During the month of November,

we remember and pray for our faithful departed. Each family in

our parish will have a page within our book to list the names

of deceased family and friends

they would like remembered. These pages will be available

in the narthex. If you have previously filled out a page,

you will be able to remove it from the book and add new

names. The Book of Life will

be placed by the tabernacle, and all of the faithful departed will

be prayed for at every Mass in the month of November.

Book of Life

You are invited to join with us in praying

The Rosary on Sundays at 9:15 a.m.

before Mass.

Catholics Care. Catholics Vote. As Catholics it is our responsibility to participate in the civic square: To engage in the processes at the local, state and national

levels that determines how our towns, state and nation are governed. The staffs of the diocesan web site and the North Texas

Catholic News Magazine have created a variety of resources to assist Catholics of the Diocese of Fort Worth by applying Catholic

Social Teaching to determine who to vote for in the upcoming election. This is what the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishop

describes as “Faithful Citizenship.” The information includes columns by Bishop Michael Olson who explains why it is our moral

responsibility to participate in the electoral process.

The resources are at: https://fwdioc.org/faithful-citizenship-for-all-catholics

Early voting is occurring from Tuesday, October 3, 2020 through Friday, October 30, 2020.

Election day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020.

While there are many moral issues before us, every issue is not equal. Issues that directly affect human lives - such as abortion and euthanasia -are fundamental and demand serious consideration.

Our Constitution heralds religious liberty in the First Amendment, yet increasingly people of faith are having to fight to retain this basic right.

There is a move in the nation to redefine marriage. The marriage of a man and woman is the foundation of the family and an essential core element of nourishing society.

The growing disparity between rich and poor means most of the world’s resources are in the hands of a small percentage of its people. The federal budget is a moral document and must prioritize the poorest and the most vulnerable among us.

The millions of undocumented persons living in the United States deserve our compassion. There is an immigration problem, and we need a humane solution to it.

War, terror, and violence have caused thousands of lost lives. We must work for just solutions to conflict in the Holy Land, throughout the Middle east, and beyond.
