    For one Wyndham Vale mother, waking up at 3am and calling for her son to get her medication while shes lying on the floor, unable to move, is an almost daily occurrence.

    Glenda Dyson was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease 13 years ago, aged 34.

    Her condition has got progressively worse, and when the 15 tablets she takes every day start to wear off, shes a prisoner in her own body.

    Her son Luke, 15, has become her carer, balancing high school with his mothers needs.

    What makes the situation even more painful for Ms Dyson is the fact that an operation could almost rid her of the symptoms of the disease, which affects the control of body movements.

    Ms Dyson is a candidate for deep brain stimulation, an operation that could improve her condition by 90 to 95 per cent.

    But because the single mother cannot afford the $50,000 needed for the operation, shes being forced to spend up to two years on a public waiting list.

    Im deteriorating fast, Ms Dyson says. If go down the street Ill get stuck, because

    the medication wears off and I cant walk any further. Ill have to wait for this operation, but Ill probably be bed-ridden by then.

    Ms Dyson said she had lost all quality of life and sometimes dreaded waking up in the morning.

    Parkinsons Victoria is organising a fund-raising walk for sufferers of the disease on Sunday, August 31.

    The annual event in Melbournes CBD raises awareness and funds for services and research to improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinsons. For more details, visit www.parkinsonswalk.com.au.

    A learning and employment network fears it will be unable to help young people in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay find work or training programs beyond next year if the state government doesnt commit to ongoing funding.

    The government last week said it would provide Victorias 31 Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs) with $8 million to allow them to continue operating next year.

    As reported by Star Weekly, LLENs faced having to close their doors after federal funding was cut in this years budget. WynBay LLEN had its budget slashed by $2.3 million.

    Labor has promised to provide LLENs with a total of $32 million over four years if it wins Novembers state election.

    But the state government has committed to providing funding for only one year, saying it will seek new funding arrangements for 2016.

    WynBay LLEN chairman Barry Harvey said the governments decision left the networks future in doubt.

    The network fears about 16,000 students in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay will lose access to education, training and employment programs in the next 12 months if the state government doesnt commit to providing more money.

    Funding for only one year creates uncertainty for us and for the young people we advocate for, Mr Harvey said.

    Wyndham residents who smoke or are overweight are being urged to get checked by their GP, as the Heart Foundation warns that many residents may be unaware they are at high risk of heart disease.

    Heart Foundation research has found that while only 15 per cent of people living in the western suburbs have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, many more people are at risk.

    The foundations cardiovascular health director Kellie-Ann Jolly said the number of Wyndham residents who smoked was above the national average, while 53 per cent of the population was overweight or obese.

    Heart Foundation research also shows 43 per cent of Wyndham residents dont get enough daily exercise.

    There are a lot of ticking time bombs. People dont know theyre at significant risk of heart disease, Ms Jolly said.

    We are alarmed by the number of people who are walking around with these risks and not realising it.

    High blood pressure and cholesterol are silent problems. They dont have symptoms, so its important to get them checked to monitor your risk of heart disease.

    Ms Jolly said people could reduce their risk of heart disease by introducing more exercise into their daily routine and lowering the amount of salt and saturated fats they consume.

    Wyndham housing, education and employment services gathered to voice their concerns about the federal budget last week.

    Opposition finance spokesman Tony Burke was in Werribee on Thursday to talk with about 20 organisations, including Wyndham council.

    Mr Burke said that all the groups raised concerns about Wyndhams unemployment rate of 8.8 per cent, 2.4 per cent above the national average.

    The strongest thing that came from today for me was that these people are dealing with the most disadvantaged in the community one of them described it as a perfect storm, Mr Burke said.

    Things need to get better, yet they are getting worse in a big way.

    Health, with a particular focus on mental health, housing and job support programs were also regarded as major issues.

    Mr Burke said a national jobs plan was needed to stop Wyndham from falling further behind national standards in a number of areas.

    Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said the day was a good opportunity for the Wyndham community to pass on a strong message to a front-bench politician.

    Im pleased Tony was able to hear first-hand from our local services about the budget impact, Ms Ryan said.

    Im certain he will recount the local impact back in Canberra when Parliament returns in a couple of weeks.

    This budget rips out vital money needed for roads and community facilities needed in this high-growth area.

    Prisoners will soon move in to a new 100-bed unit at the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Truganina.

    The Billingham unit part of the first stage of a $65 million expansion and upgrade of the maximum security remand centre was opened by Corrections Minister Edward ODonohue last Friday.

    Mr ODonohue said the expansion would play a critical role in managing some of the states most difficult offenders.

    CCTV, drug and explosive detection booths, a biometric security system, under-vehicle searching, perimeter detection systems and electronic movement passes will all be used to maintain a secure environment.

    The expansion builds on the prisons status as one of Victorias most secure facilities, which uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure the safety and security of the prison, Mr ODonohue said.

    Work on the unit started in May last year and finished earlier this month.

    Construction of a second 100-bed unit, expected to open in January, is already under way. It will increase the prisons capacity to 1005 prisoners, making it Victorias second-largest jail.

    The first stage of the expansion created 34 prison officer jobs. A further 38 positions will be created when the second unit opens.

    High-tech jail unit opens

    Julie Minehan is the first to admit that shes not an accomplished cyclist but shes not letting that stop her from riding 500 kilometres to raise money to help fight childhood cancers.

    The Westbourne Grammar School teacher is taking part in Octobers Great Cycle Challenge to raise money for the Childrens Medical Research Institute.

    Her inspiration for taking on the challenge is a pupil at her school, 10-year-old Rafael Moraes, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of four.

    Rafael has regular chemotherapy in a bid to reduce the solid tumor cancer of his sympathetic nervous system.

    Rafael has an amazing smile; hes just so happy and so strong, Ms Minehan aid. When I first met him, his cancer was in remission.

    When I found out the cancer was back, I couldnt believe it because he didnt let it stop him. He was out playing soccer and didnt let the cancer change his personality.

    Ms Minehan has set herself a target of raising $1000. Already, she has received $700 in donations, with her martial arts club, Martial Journey in Point Cook, sponsoring her $1 for every kilometre that she rides during the month.

    Ms Minehan says reaching 500 kilometres will be challenging, given she has never ridden her bike on roads.

    Im scared of the unknown, she said. I grew up in the country so Im used to snakes and that, but riding next to cars is a bit scary. Ill just get up on October 1, though, and give it a go. Its for a good cause.

    Joshua Munn collapsed when he was reunited with his American bulldog, Tiny, 57 days after the dog was stolen from his Brooklyn home.

    A Brimbank council ranger responding to a lost poodle reported in St Albans last Wednesday said he recognised Tiny from a photo published in Star Weekly on June 4.

    Mr Munn was summoned by the ranger to a house in Main Road, but having received many false sightings he was wary of raising his hopes.

    When Tiny saw his owner, he ran straight into his arms. I collapsed on the ground and he ran straight over to me and just licked me half to death, Mr Munn says.

    Mr Munn thanked friends Jenny McDonald and Narelle McKenzie, who set up a Facebook page, Help Find Tiny Please.

    I had over 1300 hits on that [Wednesday] night alone, Mr Munn said.

    As soon as I put up that I found him and everybody just went berserk.

    Mr Munn said he was also grateful for those who encouraged him when it seemed as though hed lost his dog forever.

    He said Tiny was in good health and hadnt left his side since his return.

    Mr Munn said the St Albans couple provided varying accounts of how they came to have Tiny, ranging from buying him online to finding him on the freeway.

    As reported by Star Weekly, a next-door neighbour said they saw Tiny being grabbed from the driveway of Mr Munns Brooklyn home on May 17. The theft has been reported to police. Three attempted dog thefts in Spotswood were reported on social media the same week Tiny went missing.

    Hobsons Bays Inspector Richard Paterson said police were not aware of those cases but were investigating the thefts of a Staffordshire- cross and two Maltese shih-tzus from Laverton in April and an

    attempted dog theft in the same suburb in May. He said no dog thefts had been reported to police in the past month.

    Wyndham SES has received new equipment, including first aid kits and a drill, following a donation from insurance company AAMI. The unit was one of 35 across Victoria to receive new equipment as part of the SESs annual equipment handover program. AAMI has been providing the volunteer organisation with equipment for 12 years and Wyndham SES members Timothy Smiley and Daniel Smith (pictured) said the new equipment made a difference. Mr Smiley joined the unit five years ago because he was looking for an opportunity to help people in need, while Mr Smith has been volunteering for seven years. They encouraged other members of the community to join the unit if they wanted to challenge themselves, learn new skills and meet new people.

    Dog fight a false alarm for copsBy Xavier Smerdon

    Police were called to a Point Cook house last week following reports a man had beaten a dog to death with a broom stick.

    A witness to the incident told Star Weekly that about 8.30pm on Monday, August 11, she heard what sounded like a dog being attacked by a man at a house in Campaspe Way.

    But Wyndham polices Inspector Damien Christensen said the man was actually breaking up a fight between two dogs.

    The incident involved two dogs fighting over some food, Inspector Christensen said.

    One dog was severely bitten and the incident was reported to the RSPCA. There was no further police involvement.

    Inspector Christensen said the dogs involved were both pitbulls and the injured one was rushed to a local vet for treatment.

    The tool used to break up the dogs was an aluminium broom handle, he said. The action taken was probably necessary to ensure the other dog wasnt killed.

    One witness, who did not want to be named, said he was worried about whether the dogs would be safe in future.

    There was a whole lot of noise and you could tell one of the dogs was in a lot of pain, the witness said.

    I dont know if those breeds of dogs should be kept together in a house if that is how vicious they can be. Just imagine if one of them got out and attacked a local child.

    With the West Werribee Dual Supply Scheme nearly completed, houses in parts of Wyndham Vale will soon be using recycled water.

    The $127 million scheme will supply residents in the Manor Lakes, Bluestone and River Walk estates with recycled water for use in home and garden and will secure Wyndham Vales water supply for many years to come.

    City West Water commissioned the construction of two water storage tanks as part of the project, at a cost of $20 million.

    The tanks, 50 metres in diameter and 15 metres high, are on Ballan Road.

    One tank will be used to supply drinking water.

    The other tank will supply high-quality A-class recycled water through a dedicated purple pipe system for use in almost 20,000 homes for toilet flushing and garden watering.

    Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the supply of recycled water to Wyndham Vale was one step closer now the tanks had been completed.

    This investment ensures that water supply infrastructure keeps ahead of development and that residents will be able to use the right water for the job he said.

    The supply of non-drinking water will begin next year.

    Guy told Star Weekly the state government had chosen East Werribee as the name for the largest commercial precinct to be created on government owned land in Victorias history.I think thats the name were going

    to settle on, East Werribee, Mr Guy said.

    e council wanted Werribee; the MPA [Metropolitan Planning Authority] had some other ideas but I think for now thats a sensible mid-way.

    As late as October last year, Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said he didnt like the name East Werribee.I think East Werribee describes the

    area well, but perhaps we could use a bit more innovation and imagination, Mr Napthine said.A public competition was held to

    nd a name for the area, but Mr Guy said nothing better than East Werribee had been suggested.To be honest, the best thing that

    came through was East Werribee .It [East Werribee] is accurate and it gives recognition to where the site is.

    ere was a range of names, but they probably didnt suit the site.Wyndham councils sustainable

    development director, Dean Rochfort, said the council supported the announcement. e state governments decision

    to formally adopt the name East Werribee is in line with Wyndham

    Citys submission on the suburb naming, Mr Rochfort said. e name East Werribee highlights the close and complementary relationship the employment precinct has with the Werribee City Centre.But Wyndham residents were not as

    happy with the chosen name.If thats the best name they could come up with then I dont think they were trying very hard, Stuart, of Hoppers Crossing, said.I think something completely

    di erent would have been better.

    e name Werribee brings negative connotations that it would have been good to avoid.Susanne said: I live in Werribee and

    I like it, but the name is not the best. ere are so many other things they

    could have called it. East Werribee is not the most original name, plus we already have Werribee South.Daniel, of Werribee, said he liked the

    name.It makes sense to call it East

    Werribee because thats where it is, he said. People are always trying to get rid of the name Werribee for some reason, but we should be proud of it.

    Just by changing the name to something else doesnt change the fact that you live here.
