    A Wyndham council push to encourage residents to undertake more physical activity has been recognised by the Heart Foundation.

    At the foundations local government awards last month, the council was highly commended for its commitment to planning for more open space in the city.

    The latest health statistics reveal that 52.5 per cent of Wyndham residents are overweight or obese, while 30 per cent dont do enough physical activity.

    Heart Foundation Victoria chief executive Diana Heggie said Wyndham council had shown a commitment to improving the health and well-being of the community.

    One of Wyndham Citys latest initiatives has been the Saltwater Reserve recreation facility, which includes sports grounds, parks and courts, she said.

    The council reports that the new facility has seen an increase in formal and informal recreation levels among a broad section of the community.

    Council well-being portfolio holder Bob Fairclough said addressing the complex factors that impacted on community health was a priority for the council. [The Healthy Communities Initiative] has had a very positive effect on local community health, through development of community kitchens, vegetable gardening workshops and Heart Foundation walking groups, he said.

    Fitness pushgets a tick

    The first stage of one of the key missing links in the citys arterial road network was opened in Wyndham Vale last Thursday.

    Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the opening of this stage of Armstrong Road would provide much-needed relief for frustrated Wyndham Vale motorists.

    A two-kilometre connection between Ballan and Greens roads, the $22.8 million Armstrong Road project includes a bridge over Lollypop Creek, a three-metre-wide off-road shared path and traffic signals at the Ballan Road, Greens

    Road and Manor Lakes Boulevard intersections.The road will also provide safe access to the new Wyndham Vale station bus interchange, a taxi rank and commuter carpark. The station is part of the $4.8 billion Regional Rail Link.

    Trains are expected to start operating on the 47-kilometre railway line between West Werribee and Southern Cross station from April next year.

    The road is named after Elliott Armstrong, a former British cavalry dragoon, who arrived in Werribee in 1846 and operated a ferry across the Werribee River until a bridge was completed in 1851. Mr Armstrong operated the Bridge Inn,

    later renamed the Racecourse Hotel, where the first meeting of the Road District Board a forerunner to the council was held. The first school in Werribee was established in a shed on the grounds of the inn, where students were taught by Mr Armstrongs daughter, Ellen.

    Cr Maynard said: This project is the first stage in creating an arterial road link to Ison Road and the Princes Freeway, meaning that residents will eventually have an alternative to Ballan Road and Werribee Street/Cottrell Street by about 2018-19.

    The project was completed jointly by the council and Regional Rail Link.

    Three weeks out from the state election and the battle lines have been drawn.

    Last week, Wyndham council released its Call to the Parties, an election wishlist urging the major parties to respond to the citys community and infrastructure needs.

    A 2013 Auditor-Generals report found Wyndham had an infrastructure funding shortfall of between $975 million and $1.3 billion.

    The councils wishlist calls for the parties to commit to arterial road upgrades, the removal of railway level crossings, improved bus services, ongoing funding for schools to keep up with population growth, a Wyndham crisis intervention and accommodation hub, and increased respite services, particularly for children with disabilities.

    Star Weekly provided Liberal Western Metropolitan MP Andrew Elsbury and former Tarneit Labor MP and current Werribee candidate Tim Pallas the opportunity to respond to the councils wishlist and outline their policies on some of the citys major issues.

    On roads and transport, Mr Elsbury said the Coalition had already delivered a record number of bus services to Wyndham, including new routes at Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes, with work under way on the Sneydes Road interchanges at the East Werribee employment precinct.

    Mr Pallas said Labor, if elected, would remove 50 railway level crossings, including Werribee and Cherry streets, and put $1 billion towards

    upgrading outer suburban roads, and while Labor would conduct a feasibility study into a Bay West port between Werribee and Geelong, Mr Elsbury said the Coalition was committed to building a second container port at Hastings. He said Bay West would overload Wyndhams transport corridors and decimate recreational fishing in Port Phillip Bay.

    Education proved a key battleground, with Mr Elsbury saying the Coalition was already building and rebuilding schools across the city, and Mr Pallas promising Labor would provide $10 million to upgrade Tarneit P-9 College and $7 million for Werribee Secondary College.

    Labor would also open one of its proposed tech schools in Wyndham to allow secondary students to learn hands-on skills alongside their regular studies.

    On health, Mr Elsbury said the Coalition was spending $34 million on a new 54-bed mental health unit at Werribee Mercy. Mr Pallas did not release details about Labors plans for health in Wyndham.

    Wyndham councillor Gautam Gupta said residents were fed up with being overlooked. We may not be a marginal seat but why should our needs be largely ignored? Governments need to govern for the whole of state, not just marginal seats, he said.

    A man in his 40s was taken to hospital with burns to his arms after a unit fire in Werribee last Friday afternoon.

    Emergency services were called to the blaze in Market Road, near Werribee train station, soon after 2.30pm.

    Three fire crews fought the fire, with police blocking Market Road and Manly Street, stranding buses at Werribee station.

    Werribee CFA Lieutenant Paul Ryan said the unit was already well alight when crews arrived on the scene. The man, who was the only person inside at the time of the fire, is

    believed to have been asleep in a bedroom at the rear of the unit when the fire broke out.

    Lieutenant Ryan said the blaze most likely started in the bedroom before quickly spreading into the roof, causing an estimated $80,000 damage.

    The cause of the fire has yet to be determined but Mr Ryan said it was a timely reminder of the importance of having smoke alarms.

    The man was released from hospital on Saturday.

    Half the residents of Wyndham are either overweight or obese and only 2.5 per cent eat the recommended two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables a day.

    These are the findings from the most recent Victorian Population Health Survey and alarm bells are sounding at the council.

    This is the third-lowest consumption rate of fruit and vegetables in Victoria despite Wyndham being one of Melbournes most important vegetable production areas.

    A report on Wyndhams food system was endorsed by councillors last week, with recommendations including an investigation into the viability of setting up a regional fruit and vegetable market to both support local growers and increase the availability and variety of fresh produce to residents.

    The report also proposes that council explore opportunities to amend planning regulations and reduce the density of fast food and takeaway outlets in Wyndham, while promoting outlets that sell fresh fruit and vegetables.

    Greater support for local and commercial ventures that give residents better access to healthy, affordable food was also cited in the report as an important initiative, as was decreasing or eliminating the advertising of unhealthy foods at council facilities.

    The imbalance between healthy and unhealthy food options [in Wyndham] is a particular challenge, the report stated.

    It urged the development of a citywide food policy based on community needs and attitudes

    to food, which can then be used to advocate changes to state and federal policies.

    There are large food desert areas, where people simply have to travel too far to access fresh fruit and vegetables, the report found.

    Evidence indicates that the cost, quality and lack of culturally appropriate food prevent residents from eating the foods they want.

    Also, social attitudes and beliefs, combined with large-scale marketing and media, are significant influences on peoples choices and behaviour.

    Lukar Thornton, of Deakin Universitys School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, applauded the councils stance on reducing the spread of fast food and takeaway outlets across the city.

    On the outer fringes of Melbourne theres an oversupply of fast and takeaway food, particularly the big chains, Dr Thornton said.

    And its important councils are recognising this is a problem.

    Personally, I would like to have some scope in the planning guidelines to restrict these outlets from opening in areas councils believe are inappropriate, such as close to schools.

    Theres a long way to go, but its pleasing to see councils such as Wyndham are taking the first step towards creating a healthy future.

    Whats your connection to the local community?We came to live in Werribee in 1976 and now live in Westleigh Gardens.

    Ive played acoustic guitar since the age of seven, and toured Italy with Esprit Choir. I joined Wyndham Theatre Company (then Werribee Theatre Company) in 1990, with lead roles in South Pacific, Bye Bye Birdie, My Fair Lady, and many plays.

    Im president of Wyndham Theatre Company and was musical director of the Werribee singers, until they retired. Ive also performed at Werribee Park with Melton, Werribee and Australian airforce bands.

    Im a member of Crossroads Uniting Church resources committee and, through the church, I am an active Kids Hope mentor, mentoring a pupil at Werribee Primary School.

    I also assist Werribee Secondary College with their theatre productions, including set building and lighting.

    What do you like about your neighbourhood?Were close to the beach at Werribee South, the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula, and only 26 minutes to the city.

    Were also close to the country, including places such as Ballarat. Weve got everything we need, such as a decent shopping centre and Avalon airport nearby.

    What would you change?Infrastructure and traffic are a real issue. We need to improve public transport.

    Health services need more funding, as places such as the Mercy Hospital have long delays

    What do you remember being in Wyndham thats no longer there?I miss the country town feel from back when we arrived in the 70s. Its not as easy to get around any more.

    When we moved here there were paddocks behind our house and I could walk the dog there now its housing.

    Theres a great mix of cultures now that didnt used to be here. When we came, the churches were full of Aussies and now theyre Koreans and Sudanese, which adds to the richness of the community.

    Whats you favourite eatery or place to get coffee?We have dinner with the family at Jacksons on K, its quite nice there.

    Theyre lots of good coffee shops in Werribee. I would like to see shops and restaurants along the riverfront. Wyndham Cache is great for Devonshire tea on Sundays or brunch or lunch.

    Clients of Wyndhams only respite centre have a new backyard to explore, thanks to the generosity and hard work of Laverton-Point Cook Rotary.

    The group spent weeks making over the garden at Basecamp 3030, transforming it from a vast, empty space, to a colorful garden with seating areas and play spaces.

    The new garden also includes a trampoline, a swing set and a pergola offering clients much-needed shade.

    Basecamp 3030 provides respite care for people with disabilities.

    Co-ordinator Sue Wild said the revamped space would make a difference to people visiting the house over summer.

    Kids in particular will have somewhere to enjoy themselves and relax, she said. The clients love the garden and cant wait to use it.

    Rotarian Chris Woods said the club, along with Masters and Grevillea Nursery, had jumped at the chance to help Basecamp 3030.

    It gives you a nice feeling when you see something like this completed, he said.

    A Tarneit primary school principal who stole more than $30,000 in school funds to fuel her gambling addiction walked free from Werribee Magistrates Court last week. She pleaded guilty to one count each of theft and obtaining property by deception. She was convicted on both charges and sentenced to nine months in prison, to be served in the community as an intensive corrections order.
