• Bucknell competes in the Division I Patriot League, along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. The Bison return two starters and six letterwinners from a team that fi nished 16-16 and won the Patriot League Tournament to earn Bucknell its second NCAA tournament appearance in school history.

• Bucknell is located in Lewisburg, Pa., a town of about 6,000 nestled along the Susquehanna River. Lewisburg is approxi-mately an hour’s drive north of Harrisburg, an hour east of State College, and 25 minutes south of Williamsport, home of the Little League World Series.

• Perhaps Bucknell’s most famous alum is baseball Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson. Known as a gentleman and a scholar, Mathewson is buried only about 100 yards behind the school’s athletics facility, and Bucknell’s football stadium is named in his honor. He played basketball, in addition to football and baseball, at Bucknell.

• Current head coach Kathy Fedorjaka was an assistant coach for the Bison for three seasons from 1990 to 1993. She spent one year as head coach at Connecticut College and three campaigns at nearby Bloomsburg University before returning to Lewisburg prior to the 1997-98 season. In 11

years at the helm of the Bison her record is 173-146. She has amassed 240 victories in her 15-year head coaching career. Fedorjaka is married to Bucknell’s men’s lacrosse coach, Frank Fedorjaka.

• Bucknell qualifi ed for the postseason for the third time in program history last year. The Bison faced North Carolina in the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament. Bucknell advanced to the WNIT in 2007 and the NCAA Tournament in 2002. • Bucknell Athletics has dominated the Patriot League over the years, winning 14 Presidents’ Cups in the 18 years of the league, including seven in a row from 1998 to 2004. The Presidents’ Cup signifi es overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League.

• Bucknell moved into brand new Sojka Pavilion in the winter of 2003. The 4,000-seat arena has provided a tremendous home court advantage for the Bison, who are 45-26 (.634) in the building.

• By winning its second Patriot League Tournament champi-onship last year, Bucknell became the only team seeded as low as fi fth to win the title. The Bison also became the second team to win more than one Patriot League Tournament title.

Bucknell Bison AthleticsSetting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fi elds. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released in the fall of 2006 by the NCAA and reported on by the Associated Press and The Chronicle of Higher Edu-cation, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was high-est in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1996-97 and 1990-2000 academic years. Bucknell was one of four institutions to graduate at least 90 percent of its student-athletes who enrolled during that four-year period. Bucknell posted a 93-percent rate, followed by Davidson (90 percent), Duke (90 percent) and Georgetown (90 percent).

Bucknell has claimed 112 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91. That is more than twice the next-highest total.

A total of 344 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2007-08 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 244 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2008.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2008.

In addition to the 116 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans pro-duced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 254 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 20 in 2006-07.

With fi ve more Patriot League championships in 2007-08, Bucknell has now earned 70 crowns in 18 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 90 conference players of the year, 78 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 456 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & fi eld, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 14 times in the 18-year history of the affi liation, including 10 of the last 11 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup standings in 2007-08, when the Bison teams won fi ve Patriot League titles. It was the 11th straight year and the 14th time overall, that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2007-08, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, women’s indoor track & fi eld, women’s basketball, women’s rowing and baseball. Additionally, the women’s soccer squad collected its second consecu-tive regular-season crown.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the fi nest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Buck-nell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offi ces for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison AthleticsA National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal

Bucknell Athletics is fi rst and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their fi rst priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is desig-nated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the con-course level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfi tted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Com-mittee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and dissemi-nating information to the student-athlete body.

OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identifi cation of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

2008 PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS2008 PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS

Th e Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fi elds and in the classroom. With 14 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 18 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 116 Academic All-Americans in 37 years and 112 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 18 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

Th e 2003 addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the fi nest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intra-mural and recreational sports off erings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus com-munity, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Th ree primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pa-vilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipi-ents, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offi ces for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

Th e facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957

Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. Th e new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison vol-leyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; and the spacious West Fields Complex, which encompasses Depew Field (baseball), Varsity Softball Field and the adjoin-ing Graham Field (Astroturf for fi eld hockey and women’s lacrosse) and Varsity Soccer Field (natural grass) venues that now feature a brand new stadium/press box facility.

A closer look behind the walls of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center:

RAMER SCHAFFNER

MEMORIAL HALLRamer Schaff ner Memorial Hall greets guests as they

enter the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center. Th e entry hall features the busts of 2nd Lt. George H. Ramer and 1st Lt. Dwite H. Schaff ner, Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, and provides access to Gerhard Fieldhouse and the Krebs Family Fitness Center on the ground level. Guests may proceed to the second level to enter Davis Gym, administra-tive offi ces and the Hall of Fame, which celebrates Bucknell’s Patriot League championships and other notable feats.

KREBS FITNESS CENTERPromoting lifetime wellness, the Krebs Family Fitness

Center contains state-of-the-art cardiovascular and strength conditioning equipment. Th e 16,000-square-foot center in-cludes over 175 positions for equipment within three distinct areas. Th e fi rst-level cardiovascular and pin-select equipment is open for student, faculty and staff use at all times. Directly above, the mezzanine also contains cardio equipment, with scenic views of the campus and natatorium.

Th e third area, the Berger Family Weight Room, sits on the former site of Freas-Rooke Pool, and is used for instruc-tional free-weight training and varsity workouts.

KINNEY NATATORIUMKinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard

Olympic class pool, which accommodates four varsity pro-grams — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. Th e pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur simultaneously.

Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 specta-tors, restrooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and con-cession stands.

Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. Th e facility has also served as host of the 2003, 2005 and 2007 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium.

Th e facility has proven to be quite a home pool advantage for Bucknell, which became the fi rst institution in league his-tory to capture both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships in the same season in 2003. A total of 20 meet records and 16 league marks fell that weekend.

SOJKA PAVILIONSojka Pavilion provides the Bison men’s and women’s

basketball programs with one of the fi nest arenas in the East. A “fi rst-class” venue capable of seating 4,000 spectators for sporting and other campus events, the pavilion has walk-down access to all seats and unobstructed views of the playing surface or concert stage for all spectators. Th e seating bowl features approximately 1,500 fi xed seats and 2,500 retractable seats, enabling an “expandable” open fl oor area with suffi cient space for three basketball courts for recreational activities and varsity practices. Th e spacious upper-level concourse includes two concession areas, restrooms, handicapped seating and several suites that overlook the fl oor.

Behind the scenes, on the fl oor level, Sojka Pavilion provides a green room for performance acts and other func-tions, a catering kitchen for special events, ticket windows, locker room space for home and visiting teams and offi cials, and a loading dock capable of accommodating team buses and production trucks for televised events.

More than a dozen nationally televised basketball games have been aired from Sojka Pavilion, including the ESPN2 broadcast of the 2006 Patriot League championship game and an ESPN360 airing of the Bucknell-Villanova men’s game that drew a school-record crowd of 4,433.

Whether it is the varsity student-athlete, the intramurals participant or the fi tness buff looking for a nice workout, members of the Bucknell community benefi t from a wide array of fi rst class athletics facilities. Th e completion of the Kenneth Langone Athletics & Recreation Center in 2003 highlighted a facilities boon at Bucknell. Sojka Pavilion, Kinney Natatorium and the Krebs Family Fitness Center are the centerpieces of the sparkling indoor facility, nicely complementing the renovated Davis Gym and Gerhard Fieldhouse, all of which lie under the same roof. Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium is the largest of the outdoor facilities, with 13,100 seats surrounding the FieldTurf playing surface and recently resurfaced 8-lane track. Th e West Fields complex also has a new look with the recent installation of Graham Field, featuring an AstroTurf surface for fi eld hockey and women’s lacrosse, and its neighboring Varsity Soccer Field, a two-year-old natural-grass facility constructed with a modern drainage system. Recently dedicated Holmes Stadium is an impressive covered grandstand featuring all chair-back seating, along with the accompanying support facilites (locker rooms, athletic train-ing room, press box, concession/merchandise stand, etc.) that service both fi elds. Th e next phase of the West Fields improvement project includes similar stadium venues for baseball and softball. Also located on the western end of campus are numerous grass fi elds for intramurals and recreation, as well as Bucknell’s own highly regarded 18-hole golf course. Th e Bison rowing team has its own boathouse located about 10 miles south of campus, along the scenic Susquehanna River. Th at is the only athletics facility that is not located within a short walk from the center of campus. Th e quality and location of these venues makes Bucknell one of the most sports-friendly campuses in the nation.

One of the most integral components in the success of Bucknell’s department of athletics and recreation is the strength and conditioning area. Th e fi ve-person strength and conditioning staff has a 16,000-square-foot center available at its disposal. Th e entire fi tness center consists of two distinct areas. Th e fi rst is the Krebs Fitness Center, which contains state-of-the-art cardiovascular and strength equipment. Th is part of the facility is available for use by students, faculty and staff , as well as student-athletes. Th e generous hours make it easily accessible and a great place for a workout. Th e second part of the facility is the Berger Strength Training Center, which sits on the former site of Freas-Rooke Pool, and is used for instructional free-weight training and varsity workouts. A portion of the Berger Strength Training Center is a dedicated workout space for only varsity student-athletes under the supervision of a strength and conditioning staff member.

PATRIOT LEAGUE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE

Lori Houck, a graduate of the Class of 2000, ended a brilliant career for the Bison by earning the Patriot League’s Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete Award and adding the overall Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. She became the fi rst Bucknell women’s basketball player to earn the award in her sport and the fi rst Bucknell female ever to win the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

Houck was a four-year starter who averaged 15.8 points per game as a senior, leading the Bison into the Patriot League championship game for the fi rst time in the League’s 10-year history.

Her greatest accomplishments, however, were in the classroom where she graduated with a 3.60 cumulative grade-point average as an accounting and mathematics major.

THE CHARLES WHITE MEMORIAL PRIZE

As a sophomore in 1997-98, graduate Lori Houck was named the 1998 recepient of the annual Charles F. White Memorial Prize at Bucknell. Th e award is given to Bucknell student-athletes who, at the completion of their sophomore year, have exhibited excellence in scholarship and promise and achievement in athletics.

Houck completed her academic career with a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 as an accounting and mathematics major. A candidate for Academic All-American honors, Houck was also named to the All-Patriot League Team each of the four seasons she competed.

NCAA POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

K.C. Vlah, a 1996 Bucknell graduate and former three-time captain for the Bison, was a recipient of the prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. Th e scholarship is a national award given annually to 10 women who show interest in pursuing a career in intercollegiate athletics. Vlah deferred the scholarship for a year, and returned to her alma mater in 1997-98 to pursue her master’s degree while serving as a graduate assistant with the basketball program.

A member of the fi rst-ever regular-season Patriot League championship team, Vlah fi nished her career with 312 steals, just four shy of the Bucknell record. She ranks seventh in school history in career assists with 268 and totaled 750 career points.

2008 PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS2008 PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS

Once again this winter the Bison Sports Net-work is the home of Bucknell women’s basketball action. Radio broadcasts of all 27 Bucknell regular-season games, as well as the Patriot League Tourna-ment and beyond, will be carried live on the Bison Sports Network.

For the fi fth consecutive year Bucknell’s stu-dent-run station, WVBU-FM (90.5), will serve as the home of the broadcasts.

Th e broadcasts also have a worldwide audience over the internet, in partnership with SportsJuice.com, on the Bucknell athletics & recreation Web site — www.BucknellBison.com. Fans can also hear the games over the phone through Teamline at 800-846-4700 ext. 1668.

Live streaming video of all home games and Patriot League road contests will also be available for a small subscription fee.

Ryan Unger, a member of the 1380 WMLP and 1070 WKOK high school sports broadcast teams, will serve as the main play-by-play voice for the con-tests. Back for his third year calling Bison women’s basketball, Unger is a Senior Program Analyst at SEDA-COG and is active in several area organiza-tions, including the United Way, Susquehanna Valley Young Professionals, Degenstein Library and the Sunbury Rotary Club.

Doug Birdsong, who is in his ninth season as the “Voice of the Bison”, oversees the Bison Sports Network. A 1987 Marshall University graduate who called play-by-play for college and high school athletics for 17 years before coming to Lewisburg, Birdsong was named Radio/TV Coordinator and Marketing Specialist at the University in July of 2000.

In addition to calling all the action for the Bison men’s basketball team and some for the women’s squad, Birdsong is the play-by-play voice of the Bucknell football team, and he also broadcasts numerous events from nearly all of the university’s varsity sports programs.

Birdsong has broadcast a number of NCAA Tournament contests during his tenure at Bucknell, and his call of the fi nal seconds of the men’s bas-ketball team’s 2005 upset of Kansas was repeated on a number of national outlets. He has also called NCAA action in women’s basketball, baseball, men’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer.

When Birdsong ar-rived at Bucknell he be-came just the second full-time “Voice of the Bison,” replacing Bob Behler, who held the position for more than 13 years before leav-ing to go to the University of Massachusetts.

Birdsong helped initi-ate and served as host of Bison Live!, a weekly hour-long radio show performed before a live audience. That program has been transformed into Bison Now!, a tri-annual event that highlights Bucknell’s in-season coaches and

student-athletes. Birdsong came to Bucknell from AVC Commu-

nications in Cambridge, Ohio, where, as the Sports Director, he managed the play-by-play crews on fi ve radio stations for 12 years. He called play-by-play for Muskingum College football, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball, and also handled the same duties plus baseball for area high schools. Birdsong was also responsible for writing and pro-ducing 11 daily sportscasts focusing on the six area high schools and Muskingum College.

For his last fi ve years at AVC, Birdsong coordi-nated advertising and posted an outstanding record, increasing sales by at least ten percent each year.

Prior to his experience at AVC, Birdsong worked at WTCR in Huntington, W.Va., after graduating from Marshall. While he was a student at Marshall, he worked for WMUL as its Sports Director and called football, basketball and baseball for the Th un-dering Herd. In addition, Birdsong produced and hosted a weekly one-hour sports talk show.

He has won numerous awards, including citations from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters for “Best Local Sporting Event Cover-age” two years in a row. Birdsong has also won four Outstanding Sports Operation for Play-by-Play citations from the Associated Press in Ohio, and two from the Associated Press in West Virginia. In 1999, he was chosen as the Eastern Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Media Person of the Year.

ON THE RADIOBucknell’s fl agship radio station for every

Bison women’s basketball game, home and away, is WVBU-FM 90.5 in the Lewisburg area. Ryan Unger will call all the action.

ON TELEVISIONTh e Bucknell women’s basketball team will

have three games broadcast on television with a possible fourth coming later in the season. Th e matchup between Bucknell and Penn State on Dec. 9 will be shown on the Big Ten Network. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m.

Th e team returns to television when it hosts American on Jan. 14 and Lehigh on Jan. 28. Both games will be produced by SPORTSfever TV. Bison faithful should check their local listings for broadcast times and stations.

Bucknell also has the opportunity to play on national television during the Patriot League Tournament. Should the Bison advance to the championship game on March 11, Bucknell can be seen on ESPNU at 6 p.m.

ON THE INTERNETTh e Bison Sports Network audio feed of every

game, home and away, can be accessed free of charge on BucknellBison.com via SportsJuice.com.

For a small subscription fee, fans can watch every home game live on Bison Vision. Game highlights, interviews with coaches and players and more are also available on Bison Vision free of charge. Visit the Multimedia tab on Bucknell-Bison.com to get connected.
