What do you Know about that country?

Page 3: Ireland

During its first decade, the newly formed Irish Free State was governed by the victors of the civil war. When de Valera achieved power, he took advantage of

the Statute of Westminster and political circumstances to build upon inroads to greater sovereignty made by the previous government. The oath was

abolished and in 1937 a new constitution was adopted.[48] This completed a process of gradual separation from the British Empire that governments had pursued since independence. However, it was not until 1949 that the state

was declared, officially, to be the Republic of Ireland.

CultureIreland's culture comprises elements of the culture of ancient immigration and

influences (such as Gaelic culture) and more recent Anglicisation andAmericanisation as well as participation in a broader European culture. In broad terms, Ireland is

regarded as one of the Celtic nations of Europe, which also includes Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Mann and Brittany. This combination of cultural influences is visible in the intricate designs termed Irishinterlace or Celtic knotwork. These can be seen in the

ornamentation of medieval religious and secular works. The style is still is popular today in jewellery and graphic art,[141] as is the distinctive style of traditional Irish music

and dance, and has become indicative of modern "Celtic" culture in general.
