Find out how a barometer works, and

present your findings. You could do a

PowerPoint presentation, poster, write a

speech or a podcast.

Task 3: All about isobars

Hint! Isobars are to do with air pressure.

Download a weather chart showing isobars,

from the internet. Your job is to annotate it, to

help someone else understand about isobars

and what they show. So you will need to add

notes explaining:

What an isobar is

The kind of weather you get when

isobars are close together

What counts as low pressure

What counts as high pressure

What wind is, and which way it will

blow

Week 4:

Task 4: Build a rain gauge

Using the instructions below build your own rain gauge, you will need to collect your materials, build

your gauge and upload a picture of your rain gauge onto google classroom or bring a picture into

Task 6: Display and describe your findings

Use your data to make a graph showing the temperature and rainfall of your week. Write a short

description of what your graph tells you about the weather (½ side A4). You should include the

average temperature for the week and average rainfall.

Check you have completed all the homework tasks and your project is ready to be handed in. Your

project should be presented creatively. This should be electronic or on paper. Marks will be awarded

for the creativity of your presentation.

Example graph:

Set your graph out like the one below.

Your graph can be done electronically or on graph paper – see your teacher for graph paper.

Did I complete my second project on time?

Day

Temperature

should be a red

line

Rainfall should

be displayed as

blue bars

You might

want to use

different units

for

temperature

and rainfall

depending on

the data you

collect. Make sure you look at the correct axis of the graph when plotting your data. You

should have temperature on one side, Rainfall on the other and the date at the

bottom.

Include a key and title:

For example:

A graph to show the temperature and rainfall in __*insert location*_ between

__*insert date*__ and __*insert date*__

Science Project Task: Christmas Conundrum

Use this IDEAL success ladder to help you:

Task:

Your friend’s family have been setting up their Christmas tree and they

have found that the lights don’t work anymore. They have tried to fix

them but have given up and decided to buy a new set. Your friend’s dad

doesn’t want to spend a lot so he wants to buy some cheap lights that

are wired in series. Your friend’s mum says that she can remember

something about parallel circuits being better but she can’t remember

why.

Explain why lights in parallel would be a better buy.

Date due in: __________________________

I Draw a series and a parallel circuit using symbols.

D Describe the differences between series and parallel circuits in terms of how bright the bulbs are and what happens if one blows

E Explain how the ‘electricity’ travels around both types of circuit

A Use the idea of electrons to explain what happens to them in a circuit

L Give examples of where parallel circuits are used and why series circuits are not used.

Motion and Forces Task

Use this IDEAL success ladder to help you:

Modern Cars Safety

Modern cars are very good a moving people from place to place in comfort but they are also getting better and better at stopping and keeping people safe if disaster happens and they have a crash. Find out how crumple zones, airbags and seat belts use forces to keep people as safe as possible in the event of a crash and design a poster which explains how these features work in modern cars

I Describe what happens to seatbelts, crumple zones and airbags when a crash happens.

D Draw diagrams which show the size and direction of the forces are acting when a car is speeding up, travelling at a constant speed, slowing down gently and doing an emergency stop.

E Explain how the safety features absorb the energy and forces during a crash and how the stopping distance is affected by the speed of a car

A Identify the factors that affect the stopping distance of a car and explain how they can affect the stopping distance

L Find out how passive and active safety features help to keep modern cars safe.
