“Responsibility to save every drop of water”
RESCUE: The Ilembe District Disaster Management Centre was officially opened on Thursday, 6 August 2015
Continued from page 1
An integrated and co-o r d i n a t e d d i s a s t e r management policy that focuses on preventing or reducing the risk of disasters, mitigating the severity of d i s a s t e r s , e m e r g e n c y preparedness, rapid and e f f ec t ive r e sponse t o disasters and post-disaster recovery; the establishment of national, provincial and m u n i c i p a l d i s a s t e r m a n a g e m e n t c e n t r e s ;
d i s a s t e r m a n a g e m e n t volunteers; and any other matter that re lates to e n h a n c i n g D i s a s t e r Management efforts.
The opening of this centre, according to Dube-Ncube, could not have come at a more opportune time as the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is in the midst of its worst drought in 21 years.
“We have not had much rain in the past two years and this has created a host of problems for us which
include the risk of wild fires as vegetation is much drier than in previous years,” she said.
The new centre, located in KwaDukuza, houses state of the art rescue equipment and world class communication systems which enables residents from the furthest reaches within the entire District municipality to report any incidents resulting in a speedy response.
In her address to guests at the official opening, Dube-
N c u b e s t r e s s e d h e r department's commitment to the establishment of centres across all districts in the Province.
“We have so far officially opened these centres in eThekwini, uMkhanyakude, Harry Gwala and uThukela, we are working hard to ensure that the remaining districts all have their centres up and ready as soon as possible.
“We are also completing the construction of the main centre which will be in Pietermaritzburg. This centre will be linked to all the other centres across the province and provide disaster crews with immediate information whenever needed.”
The MEC also called upon residents to use water sparingly as the drought currently facing the province is getting worse each day.
“We have a collective responsibility to save every drop of water since our dams across the province are running dry. Water tankers are dispersed daily to bring water to our communities that have been severely affected by the drought,” said Dube-Ncube.

Stalwart attorney passes on
It was a very sad day for citizens when well known and respected member of the community, Mr Jay Prakash Pundit, a stalwart attorney passed away at St Augustine's Hospital o n M o n d a y a f t e r n o o n a f t e r u n d e r g o i n g extensive surgery.
According to his daughter, Nishana, his resilience finally gave up days ago, “after combating cancer coupled with the compounding effect of age as well as a struggling heart that could not man up to his robust and unwavering spirit.”
Jay Pundit, as he was popularly known, was born in Durban on Tuesday, 27 April 1943. He matriculated at the then Stanger High School, presently Stanger Secondary School.
He studied for an Attorneys Admission Diploma and served articles of clerkship with a reputable firm of attorneys namely Messrs. RP Singh and Associates in Victoria Street, Durban.
He teamed up and married fellow attorney, Priscilla Pundit (Singh) in 1969.
He commenced legal practice on his own around 1970 under the name and style of Jay Pundit and Company in M a h a t m a G a n d h i Street. He then studied further balancing full time practice, a family and was admitted as a Conveyancer.
He was an attorney for 47 years and was still practicing in a three way partnership with his wife and eldest daughter; at the age of 72 years old.
He was committed selflessly to several community projects like the Lower Tugela Hindu Veda Dharma Sabha and was a Trustee of the Stanger

“His selfless actions and c o m p a s s i o n a t e h e a r t sculptured him into a true gentleman whose altruism shone through his years as Judge, attorney, mentor and dear companion to many,” said Nishana.
He leaves behind his wife Priscilla; five children: Ashok, Nishana, Ishana, Shiven and Priashni, 11 Grandchildren, one brother and five sisters.

In the auspicious time of Women's month, Rhirandzu Ndlovu; a 10-year-old learner in Grade 4 at Dinuphozo, congratulated her school Principal for rising to the occasion despite difficulties in the past, describing her as a women with “gri t and determination.”
“There were so many challenges in the past. We d i d n ' t h a v e w a t e r , sanitatio

“The women who had the tenacity to face the music were no other than our principal, Miss PP Vilakazi. Now we stand here today, tall and proud. Our new school, our new Dinuphozo Primary,” she said.

Citizens of KwaDukuza have accepted load shedding, like the rest of South Africa, as a way of life.
However some ratepayers called the Xpress Times on Thursday, 7 August crying foul claiming that some areas did have electricity when load shedding was declared.
We spoke to member of KwaDukuza Munic ipa l i ty Executive Council (EXCO) and Ward 19 Councillor: Sandeep Oudhram as to why this happens.
By Xpress Reporter
An employee from a local newspaper has allegedly been arrested and charged with conspiracy to murder. It is alleged that the woman approached two men and offered them a sum of money to kill her husband, allegedly a Pastor.
The men allegedly approached the husband after church, and requested a lift. They then allegedly attacked him in the vehicle, and the victim fought them off.

Woman arrested for hit on husbandcommunity spotted the culprits with blood on their clothing, which was allegedly acquired from the victim's injuries. They then allegedly beat up the two suspec t s who were l a t e r hospitalised.
Following their discharge, it is alleged that the victim identified one of the culprits in town. Police were alerted and the suspects were apprehended and questioned before they allegedly revealed the victim's wife as the mastermind behind the attack.
The suspects are due in court this week.
Load shedding, not selective…
“The community need to understand in this time of electricity demand on the grid coupled with the drought there are technical issues that we must face,” he said.
He said that reservoirs that bring water to citizens are powered by pumps which use electricity.
The councillor stated that if all of KwaDukuza was subjected to load shedding then “all of KwaDukuza would also have to face water stoppages at the same time.”

outside the Dladla's Tavern in Groutville on Saturday at about 8pm. They were approached by a local youth who did not speak to either of them but simply clouted her and seized her handbag containing R300 as well as personal documents. They appealed to the culprit to return the items and he refused. They made their way to the police station and reported the incident. Police arrested Sithembiso Mzoneli (28). He was remanded in custody pending a bail consideration on a charge of robbery.
BeliefsA 42-year-old man is in custody
after an attack on a Lindelani family. Winile Khanyile alleges that she was awoken at 8pm by her daughter shouting for help. She opened the door and noticed her daughter being pursued by a man. When Khanyile questioned the man about why he was attacking her daughter, he struck her with a boulder on the head resulting in her losing consciousness and being treated at hospital. He
accused the family of being responsible for the death of his parents and wanted to kill them as revenge for his loss. Richard Xulu (42) has been remanded in custody pending a bail investigation.
Breaking the lawA security official appeared in
court on a charge of kidnapping and attempted murder. According to David Hadebe, he was approached by a van and vehicle. As the security official was known to him, he accompanied the group who demanded he accompany them and initially refused. They drove to a spot in the New Guelderland area where they quizzed him about a television set. As he denied knowledge, the group took turns in assaulting him with a sjambok. They poured petrol on him and set him alight before speeding off. Police arrived and he was hospitalized and recently discharged. Dennis Govender (38) was charged and released on bail. He is due back at court on 4 September.

To our dearest loved one. We can shed tears that he is gone or we can smile because he has lived. We can close our eyes and pray
that he will come back or we can open our eyes and see all that he has left. Our hearts can be empty because we can’t see him or we
can be full of love that we shared. We can turn our back on tomorrow and live yesterday or we be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. We can remember him and only that he is gone or we can cherish his memory and let it live on. We can cry and close our
mind, be empty and turn our back or we do what he would want, smile open our eyes, love and go on. You will forever be
cherished in our hearts.

SILVER TONGUE: First, second and third place winners from the African Bank Inter School Poetry competition held at Stanger Manor Primary School on Wednesday, 5 August 2015 seen
with judges from (L-R): Vernon Pillay and Thandeka Ngidi (Insika Reading and Writing Club) and Ms R Ismail-Nakooda (Senior English educator: Stanger Manor Secondary)
Inter school poetry, standards trump last year
Teacher awards over expenditure, should have funded schools
The R6.5 million National Teachers awards over expenditure should have funded text books, desks and chairs.
Minister Angie Motshega has disclosed that R22 million was spent on March 2015 National Teachers Awards (NTA) ceremony held at Gallagher Convention Centre, Johannesburg.
Teachers are the backbone of our education system and their efforts and successes must be celebrated. This is an unacceptable, extravagant waste of state resources, of which South African schools desperately need instead. This could have funded approximately 23 000 mathematics text books, 43 000 school chairs and 11 200 hundred school desks.
However the Democratic Alliance will not let this go unscrutinized. The tenders that went out will definately be scrutinized and monitored.
However, we are sure that the teachers will agree, the many millions especially in over expenditure, spent on this one night only awards ceremony could be put in better use in upgrading school infrastructure and the
provision of much needed basic learning materials such as text books, desks and chairs that will last for years to come.
This is purely another party funded by you, the taxpayer. Who cares about the school children and their future?
The Democratic Alliance believes: Eliminate corruption such as cutting back on salaries to superfluous departments and linking salaroes to performance. This would free up fourteen billion which is well in excess of the twelve billion requored. Supporting a long term vision to create an environment that stimulates the economy, thereby creating jobs for more people.
The fundamental cornerstone of creating a vibrant economy is education.

Lieutenant J Roopchand (third from left)
Why Women's Day celebrated on 9 August
Have we ever wondered why we celebrate Women's Day on the 9th August in South Africa? It has nothing to do with honouring women just because we need another “Mother's Day”. This day commemorates the 9 August 1956 when women participating in a national march petitioned against pass laws, a legislation that required African persons to carry a document on them to “prove” that they were allowed to enter a “white area” during the apartheid regime.
On this day, over 20 000 women of all races and ages from every corner of South Africa marched towards the Union Buildings in Pretoria, in protest against the pass laws that p r o p o s e d e v e n f u r t h e r restrictions on the movement of women and delivered petitions to the Prime Minister's office of JG Strijdom's.
Women throughout South A f r i c a s i g n e d p e t i t i o n s indicating their anger and frustration of having their freedom of movement restricted by the hated official passes.
The women sang freedom songs such as Nkosi Sikeleli Africa, but the anthem of the march was another freedom song, namely:
'Wathint abafazi strijdom'When you strike the womanYou strike a rock
TENACITY: Leaders of the 1956 Women's March (from left to right: Radima Moosa, Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph and Sophie Williams) before delivering protest petitions to the then South African Prime Minister JG Strijdom (pronounced as Stray-dom)

“This is a time to recognise the power that women possess. We stand together and demand equality and appreciate how far we have come. To the young girls out there, do not underestimate the power you have as a woman. There is nothing you cannot do.”

You will be crushed (You will die)
As politics is not everyone's cup of tea, or coffee, may we escape to a lighter topic, I hope. Women fought the system without a weapon and they won the battle. Our women are brave as lions. The abuse of women must come to an end. Our freedom was not fought by our men alone but also by the mothers of our nation too. We all support that women must have the same rights as men. In addition to women being brave people, some also claim that they are better than men, as without them, we men won't be in this world and vice versa. We
salute the four brave women who led this march, namely Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, Sophie Williams and Lilian Ngoyi.
W e a c k n o w l e d g e w i t h sinceri ty the tremendous progress that women have made in all walks of life. Their swift advancement in poli t ics , education, male-dominated professions yet never neglecting their tender love and care in family and social matters.
We cannot do without one another so let us continue to coexist in peace and harmony. God loves us all.

Warriors Sport's continued their winning streak last week when they stunned the more illustrious KSST counterpart to solidify their position at second in the KwaDukuza Volleyball Association EZE's Electrical Premier League in the league game played in front a capacity crowd at the association courts last Thursday.
All eyes were on KSST who, with a victory, would have been guaranteed the runner up spot behind runaway log leaders, Grove End. They started their first set in a very business-like way, pounding the ball all over the place. Warriors, who beat Randsons a forthnight ago, played chase throughout the set as they succumbed 19-25 to the formidable KSST attack. The writing was on the wall for Warriors, or so the
Warrior Sports jubilant after victory over KSST
pundits thought. A severe tongue lashing from manager
Rajiv Mathapershad at the break seemed to do the trick for Warriors as they came firing on all cylinders in the second set finding KSST in sixes and sevens as the wheels of their bus fell off. Sherwin Adyappa spearheading the attack force and assisted by Daniel John, Sigen Kistnan and Nolan Govender made up for their lack lustre performance in the first set as they set the courts on fire with their thunderous attacks. Warriors raced to a humiliating 25-10 win in the second set to level the scores and send the game into the final decisive set.
The final set was a real humdinger that brought the huge crowd to its feet. There was nothing separating the both sides as
they fought ruggedly for superiority. At 15-15, KSST pressed the self distruct botton as they failed to retrieve two simple at tacks thus handing victory 17-15 to Warriors, much to the delight of their supporters and manager.
Manager Mathapershad was over the moon and full of praise for his young charges who have shown their never-say-die attitude and fighting spirit in their last two ventures.
Meanwhile Grove End have but sealed the crown with a comprehensive 25-20, 25-20 over their rivals R a n d s o n s w h i l s tSunbrook extended their lead at the top of the leader board in the KDVA Division I league with a hard fought 25-21, 22-25, 15-12.
Warriors winning streak continues… Maphumulo hosted the iLembe District
Golden Games that took place at Sabuyaze Sport Ground last week when iLembe selected its squad from local municipalities, namely KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Ndwedwe and Maphumulo for the Regional Golden Games that will take place in September.
The selections were made in 11 codes which namely Pegging, Ring the stick, brisk wall, Passing the ball and kick, Ball relay, passing the ball, Duck walk, Dress up, Yuskei, Soccer and Rugby ball throw.
All the sport codes will be represented in the regional games this year. iLembe have won th i s reg iona l tournament 3 t imes consecutively.
