municipality rural areas has become a passage of volatility after violent protest action almost every week since a few months ago.
The latest actions by Ntshawini locals have seen an escalation as to the extremes residents of rural KwaDukuza can go.
B u r n i n g t y r e s , boulders, tree stumps and rubble used to blockade roads reached a n e w l e v e l o f destruction as three sugar cane trucks were allegedly stopped by rampaging protestors then torched.
A c c o r d i n g t o KwaDukuza SAPS liaison officer, Inspector Johannes Khoza, the incident happened on Friday morning, 13 May 2016.

The residents of the Nkobongo, mostly youth, took to a peaceful protest which was undertaken at the Weldon Industrial node, on Wednesday, 11 May 2016.
According to Ali Ngidi, the community leader, the purpose of the march was to create awareness among industry that the large youth populace within Nkobongo needed training and were unemployed.

The recent spate of theft with regards to the Ilembe smart water meters across Kwa Dukuza especially, has left ratepayers with a quandary in terms of the cost of replacement and who fits the bill.
According to Ilembe Communications Director, Zee Nqala, the matter is usually investigated and there are processes that need to be adhered to.
“For example obtaining case number or written affidavits that will assist in the municipality being able to claim from insurance. Municipality then fits the meter at its cost,” she said.
She added that should there be more findings, the consumers will be contacted and their account will be debited in accordance.

The KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) did respond by saying they are aware of these activities and that this exercise was highly condemned.

placed at risk. Historically, those who have been at the wrong side of the law, have faced the music for their action; a number of perpetrators in the past have been charged and we are doing whatever we can to curb illegal activities in public roads.
“We have rolled out a special programme called Social Crime Prevention which speaks directly about illegal activities in public spaces and law enforcement,” said KDM Corporate Communications Director, Sifiso Zulu.

41-year-old Thulani Nzama appeared in the KwaDukuza Regional Court on 12 May 2016 and was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for raping a 24-year-old woman.
