Hit men ambush taxi boss

15 alleged hit men were the latest victims of taxi related violence that took place at Primrose Road in Stanger Manor on Wednesday at approximately 6:30am.

According to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) SAPS Media liaison officer Colonel Jay Naicker, a security convoy (in which the taxi owner was in) was proceeding through Stanger Manor when they were ambushed by unknown assailants in an alleged drive by. It is alleged that a group of 10-15 men opened fire on the convoy injuring three members of the covey. The security officers returned fire and one of the suspects was fatally injured.

“Two of the injured who are security officers sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. The third who is a taxi owner died on his way to hospital. The suspects fled the scene in their own getaway vehicle. Police recovered the getaway vehicle in the Darnall area,” he said.

It is alleged that the deceased taxi owner's security detail then allegedly stormed the local Stanger Hospital with heavy artillery type weapons looking for him.

The Xpress Times asked the hospital how it allowed armed men in the premises. We were r e f e r r e d t o t h e K w a Z u l u - N a t a l Department of Health.

The MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo condemned the violence which then led to the closure of the casualty ward.

“What has happened here is totally unacceptable. Our province comes from a history of violence and we've worked very hard to ensure that our people live in peace. It's worse now when frail people can't even access health services due to such senseless incidents,” he said.

He added that every patient and visitor to the hospital was screened

in order to “confirm their bona fides.”

Naicker also said that it was too early to speculate on the motive for the attack and said that they have called in re-enforcements from the surrounding police stations into KwaDukuza to assist in stabilising the area and to “discourage further occurrences of this nature.”

The Hawks took charge of investigations with an appeal to the public for information on the suspects whose getaway vehicle was found in Darnall.

Police are on the hunt for suspects that were involved in the death of an infant in the Mbitane area in Maphumulo.

The local SAPS received a report on Friday, an hour before midnight, of a shooting and proceeded to the household.

alleged firing upon two men in a white Toyota Yaris on Sunday, 11 January 2015 at 11am were arrested by Durban Organised Crime on Monday.

As reported by the Xpress Times: “Community leader shot by taxi security” (16-01-15), local community leader Imam Hanif Pandor and Moulana of the Stanger Jamia Masjid along with his out of town brother-in-law, Farook Randera (50) were leaving the Dawnside Area after their desired mechanic was closed.

According to an eyewitness account the

lifeless body of a one-year-old boy.“It is alleged that the family was

attacked by unknown suspects who tried to set the house alight but failed. The suspects fired shots at the house fatally wounding the one-year-old and injuring his 12-year-old brother. The motive of the attack is unknown at this stage. The father of the children who is a rank manager at the KwaMaphumulo Taxi Rank was not at home when the attack took place,” said Colonel Naicker.

Double troubleA security officer who was suspected of theft

now has two cases to answer to. Jacobus Muller contacted police after receiving information of his stolen property being in the possession of a guard at a construction site of his at Ntshawini. Police recovered various building material items from his premises. The guard also had a fire-arm license in his permission. When officers visited his house the weapon was concealed under his mattress. Micheal Dube (50) has been charged with theft and failing to safeguard a fire-arm. He will appear in court this week for a bail consideration.

Fortunate victimWhen Suresh Maharaj

and his family were returning home they noticed a known youth carrying a bag and tried to stop him. The youth fled on arrival at their home. They noticed items which usually lay about missing. On entering the house they noticed that a window had been broken, entry gained; and a cellphone, takkies and a gas cylinder missing. They strongly suspected the fleeing youth who police placed under arrest after questioning him. Preshaan Duwarkah (22) will seek bail at his next appearance later this week.

Bitter endTwo friends who enjoy each other's company

Man fatally shot in NewarkBy Xpress Reporter

A driver was allegedly shot and killed on the R102 near Newark on Monday, 19 January 2015. According to Newark SAPS Liaison Officer, Malusi Ngubani, the 41-year-old received multiple gunshot wounds.

“According to his Identity Document, the deceased is Jabulani Moses Gumede. Anyone with information must assist the police by contacting us on 032 457 0320,” said Ngubane.

He added that the suspects are still at large and an investigation is underway.

What water crisis?Last Thursday I contacted my local councillor to

report a water leakage. My neighbour called the call-centre. Lo and behold no-one responded. I contacted the councillor again and he assured me that someone known as Vim was going to attend to the problem. No-one came to attend. In the meantime the quantity of water oozing out of this broken pipe is increasing. I then contacted yet another councillor and he too assured me that the matter would be reported and attended to. I phoned again on Monday and was told that the plumbers had attended to the problem.

Shame on you people for ignoring the cries of a citizen who takes time to bring problems to the attention of the authorities at his cost.

Shame on the Mayors of KwaDukuza and iLembe for lip service for not ensuring that these concerns and challenges are addressed.

A week later and still no measures have been taken to address this issue and by the way, four months ago, a local newspaper highlighted building rubble dumped in a residential area and still no resolution. Honestly what does one need to do to get a basic service?

iLembe Chess wins gold at National tournament

With the festive season comes the hub of chess activities as most National tournaments take place during December and January.

The 2014 season was no different as iLembe District had 3 teams representing KwaZulu Natal at the Tops Schools National Tournament that took place in Tshwane (Pretoria) from 8 to 16 December 2014.

Umhlali Prep had their U13 team representing KZN in both the girls and mixed division and Melville Primary represented KZN in the U15 girls division.

iLembe did not disappoint KZN

WINNERS: iLembe Chess did KZN proud at the National tournaments

as the U13 Umhlali Prep girls team scooped gold whilst the U13 mixed team won bronze with all nine provinces represented. This is 3rd year running that Umhlali has done iLembe and KZN proud by winning medals in the National Tournament. This success must be attributed to the dedication and hard work of coach Spha Nkosi and manageress, Mrs. V. Murugen. They also receive the full support from the staff and principal, Mrs. Russels.

M e l v i l l e P r i m a r y w h o represented KZN for the first time ended up a surprising 5th and they

were the only girls team to beat Gauteng and draw against Western Cape. According to coach Mr. W.M. Gwamanda, the 5th positions went beyond their expectations.

iLembe were once again invited to the JZ Foundation to the annual JZ chess open held at Nkandla on 19 December 2014. iLembe was represented by the Mandeni Local Municipality with the aim being to provide all local municipalities within the district. In 2013, KwaDukuza won the tournament. However were placed 4th overall competing against 12 districts. The iLembe team was represented by learners aged between 8 and 12 in the U15 division and their 4th place must be commended.

In January 2015, iLembe Chess Association rewrote the history books as they participated in the South African Junior Chess Championship that took place in Kimberley

from 2 to 7 January. Although the Association tried in vain to secure a sponsorship of R160 000 from the iLembe Municipality and the Department of Sports and Recreation for the provision of t r a i n i n g , k i t , t r a n s p o r t , accommodation and meals for the 60 member team, the parents, working community and sponsors managed to raise R140 000 to make the dreams of these kids come true. There is still a deficit of R20 000 to be raised to cover the costs. Anyone wishing to assist can still contact the chairperson, W.M. Gwamanda on 072 484 7835 or could deposit whatever amount into the iLembe Chess Association bank account at FNB (Stanger Branch) in account number 6248770235.

The iLembe Chess Association would like to thank all parents, well-wishers and sponsors, iLembe Chamber of Commerce,
