G4S Security Officers apprehended a suspect in Manor Drive, Stanger Manor after receiving a call from a client in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to Officer ME Mhlongo, the client alleged that a suspect was inside their Toyota Tazz on their premises.

“We jumped over the fence and apprehended one suspect who was handed over to SAPS,” said Mhlongo.

Mhlongo also said that another suspect was arrested in Stanger Manor after breaking into two vehicles. “Two vehicles were broken into on Saturday in Manor. The suspects, who fled, were described to us and they were arrested on Monday morning,” he said.

Educators back to school after department interdictBy Xpress Reporter

eThekweni North Region or members from the Ilembe District, together with the Alliance, “war” of attrition with protests against District Director of the Ilembe Region: Thembinkosi Vilakazi proving futile after almost two weeks.

The ruling party in the African National Congress (ANC) Greater KwaDukuza Region and its local alliance partners, (the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) have also thrown their weight behind SADTU.

On Monday the Department of Education (DoE) secured an interdict which will enforce the “no work no pay” caveat if SADTU members continue with the strike.

“A court interdict was granted yesterday and Miss Vilakazi remains the district director in Ilembe,” said Muzi Mahlambe (DoE).

SPOILING MOM: The learners of the Buzz Montessori “Grade R” class with their mothers at the schools Mother's Day Breakfast; held on

Wednesday. Parents helped their kids put together a photo frame and then their kids

served them tea and biscuits thereafter

Concurrent to the interdict being issued on Monday was the announcements by local SADTU executives at the District Office (opposite the Fire KwaDukuza Station).

A SADTU executive thanked members for “keeping the spirit” and said that they are “in a war.”

SADTU Greater KwaDukuza Region Chairperson and local COSATU Chairperson: Buhle Khuzwayo told members “not to be demobilized by the media.”

The City Press article: “Sadtu selling principals' posts in exchange for cows, sheep and goats” this past week was cited in the gathering. The controversy and anger stemmed from the following as per the City Press: “Investigators appointed by Motshekga to probe the jobs-for-cash racket run by union officials, which City Press exposed last year, have found that Sadtu members have 'infiltrated that department and run a complex patronage system' in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Sadtu's provincial secretary, Dolly Caluza, said the protests at Ilembe and Ugu had nothing to do

with positions.'There are issues our

leaders are raising with the department and some of them date back to 2011. We are protesting about norms and standards and the allocation of teachers. Teachers are overworked and there is animosity because teachers are overworked,' she said. Caluza accused Vilakazi of failing to attend meetings to resolve labour issues. She denied the protests were about positions.”

Civic bodies said that democracy itself was being “held ransom” and referred to the Constitution handbook on the Bill of Rights (Page 14) regarding Education in te rms of learners and educators r ights being “stifled.”

DA comments and concernsEmployee Related CostIt is more than R36 million

f rom the p rev ious yea r (2014/2015). In 2014/2015 council employed 1034 workers on permanent basis and now proposes 1153 in the 2015/2016 budget. Simply put we want to employ 119 more people. The DA is concerned that while overall as reflected indicate 25% the reality minus electricity bulk purchase it stood at 44% in the 2014/2015 year. We cannot move our eyes from this reality. There needs to be thorough r e v i e w i n t e r m s o f a l l departments on needs based employments and filling of critical posts. At the same time m o v i n g p e o p l e a c r o s s departments based on the necessary skills to execute their duties could save council millions. Have we calculated outsourcing like electrical work to contractors repairs and maintenance in some instances streetlights etc which was previously done in house. If ones considers the cost to the existing employee cost it would push up the overall employee cost. This exercise must be carried out to determine real employee cost.

Determination of RatesThe DA believes R130 000 be

exempted from property value across the board and not only as proposed for R100 000 for some properties. We must avoid double standards and apply fairness to ALL residential properties. With the new valuation on properties with or

If the recent disruptions in education is stressing you or your child out, you need to read on.

The main issue is that learners must not lose out on syllabus coverage during the school disruptions. Master Maths doors will therefore be opened from 11am to 7pm from Monday to Friday and from 9.00am to 1.30pm on Saturday to allow their

without improvement should be capped at 6%. Have we c o n d u c t e d a u d i t o n a l l households including townships where values of property exceed R130 000. Are we bringing them into the rates net regardless of what that contribution is in the number game that will enhance our rates base and make service delivery sustainable for ALL the people.

consultation - IDP/Budget with communities ward needs are ignored in the budget despite projects identified by the ward councillor/ward committee and the community. The DA appeals to management of various depar tments to cons ider prioritised projects by wards. All wards should benefit from projects. It would be interesting if an exercise is carried out since the new administration came into being since 2011 as you would see anomalies are glaring. Let's rectify this.

Cost Containment MeasuresIn the 2015/2016 budget these

measures must be enforced and this information must be cascaded to all departments. This will build confidence between the municipality and communities. We need to build trust with communities that their monies are not spent lavishly. Areas to monitor would be c a t e r i n g , e v e n t s , m e d i a (advertisement) and consultants etcetera.

Capital BudgetAsset management requires

council to allocate 40% of the capital budget to renewable of existing assets. Is this the case? Furthermore 8% or more should be allocated to repairs and maintenance of councils Plant Property and Equipment (PPE) against 7% in the draft budget. Do we have a management plan to ensure the ongoing health of t h e m u n i c i p a l i t y ' s infrastructure?

We further reserve our rights to make further comments and seek clarity when the tariff and budget will be adopted before June 2015.

Please clearly state what you have done for the community and provide motivation on why individuals should mark the ballot in your favour?

Cultural Unity Festival promotes

harmony KwaDukuza Municipality

(KDM) Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu has applauded stability and peaceful social co-existence exercised by the people of Shakashead.

Council, on Sunday, launched the “Cultural Unity Festival” in support of the re-integration process of foreign nations who fell victim to Xenophobic attacks recently.

Mthembu said he was happy about the fact that most victims have moved back to their communities and social co-existence and unity has been restored.

He had a one on one with some immigrants who said that they were also happy about the re-integrated process. Mthembu also learned that the victims had safely gone back to their living spaces a n d t h e c o m m u n i t y h a s welcomed them as equal citizens with rights as well.

The activities follow the spate of violent attacks against foreign immigrants in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal recently.

He described the exercise as a mechanism that will help bring

back the dignity that the people of Shakashead deserve. “The Freedom Charter holds true that South Africa belongs to all who live in it. As the people of KwaDukuza, we owe it to ourselves to ensure we value the objectives contained in the Freedom Charter and the aspirations, legacy and spirits of our fallen heroes. Our local heroes stood for freedom, peace and unity, let us not compromise the dignity we deserve, we have travelled a long journey to be where we are today.”

Mthembu had previously spoken out against instability in the area. “We cannot allow instability through human action, claim supremacy of our fledgling democracy.

“As the dust settles against attacks directed to foreign nationals in the country, we would like to first thank the government for its firm approach in dealing with these senseless attacks. I also welcome the smooth integration of people from various countries. We applaud the people of Shakashead for working together in winning

the fight against the evils of Xenephobia,” said Mthembu.

The event was also convened to engage the community about service delivery improvements and infrastructural development.

IRRESPONSIBLE EDUCATORS

Schools in the Ilembe District are closed as SADTU KwaDukuza wants the Department of Basic Education's Ilembe District Head of Office "removed".

Has SADTU not heard of fairness, due process, and the right to be heard? If the governing body or educators or parents or learners are dissatisfied with an educator for whatever reason (incompetence, absenteeism, violation of rules, etc), can such an educator be "removed" by mass action without a disciplinary hearing? One of the leaders of our local SADTU branch himself only received a slap on the wrist for a major violation of education legislation after he faced disciplinary proceedings. He did not face mass action by SADTU. In fact SADTU KwaDukuza "rewarded" him by keeping him in office.

Did SADTU follow protocol before embarking on a strike? Did it exhaust all the remedies? available to it?

The right to strike is legally entrenched, but it does not give carte blanche to strikers to behave irresponsibly by forcing the closure of schools, wielding knobkerries, and engaging in unlawful conduct. I recall having seen a photograph in a local newspaper with educators "proudly" displaying a poster with the word 'KILL" on it. Those educators are inciting violence, they must be identified, and charged. Is such behaviour a good example to learners in our crime-ridden society reeling from the recent xenophobic attacks? Civil society has no place for such people.

So SADTU has a bone to pick with the Department's local head, but who suffers? The learners of course, especially grade l2 learners whose very future and university admission depends on their performance this year, even their performance in the June exams. If SADTU had the interests of learners at heart and not their personal gripe, it would have permitted grade 12 lessons to continue at schools in our district.

A national strike over wages is also looming imminently, which means that grade 12 learners will be even more disadvantaged. Why can't wage negotiations and wage strikes not take place at the beginning of the year?

Think again SADTU, think of the learners, think of their parents who have made great sacrifices and whose hopes rest on their children. Strike responsibly without behaving badly and without prejudicing grade 12 learners.

FAIR PLAY

Comments concerning SADTU disruptions in the Dolphin Coast

Both COSATU and SADTU are operating outside their jurisdictions in this matter. While their role is to make representations on behalf of educator concerns, they can in no way demand the dismissal of anyone prior to a proper investigation being conducted, and apart from the proper channels.

The basis for SADTU's strike, that teachers are blaming the regional director for Ilembe's poor pass rate holds no water. It is myopic, to say the least, for SADTU to assume that the pass rate of four municipalities rests solely on a single individual. Various other contributing factors, including incompetent educators, should also be taken into consideration.

The behaviour of striking SADTU members at Umhlali Preparatory School and Ashton College is perhaps an indication of how unscrupulous and unruly the organisation itself really is. It's an understatement to call SADTU members, who are qualified educators by the way, professionals. SADTU should scrap its code of conduct which it consistently violates.

Educators are supposed to treat pupils and schools with dignity and respect. Educators should act responsibly and in a manner that maintains the honour and dignity of their profession. Unfortunately these so-called educators, clearly SADTU members, were acting like uncivilised Neanderthals on Wednesday when they disrupted learning and enforced the closure of the Umhlali Preparatory School, and they became aggressive, rude and

racist at Ashton College. Their naïve attempt to disrupt Ashton College

shows how uninformed this organisation can be at times. Ashton is a private institution and none of its educators belong to SADTU. What logic SADTU used in attempting to strike outside Ashton College baffles me, and I know that it probably baffles their own members just as much.

Even the disruption at Umhlali Preparatory School was unnecessary. After all only four teachers from this school are SADTU members. The school may be partly state-aided but the bulk of its funding comes from fees paid by parents. So SADTU must respect the rights of the parents and governing body of this school. These schools have a right to continue learning even in the face of SADTU strikes.

It is paradox that, in taking a stand against bad education results, SADTU has to disrupt education in the process.

Councillor Nel SewrajAfrican Christian Democratic Party (ACDP)KwaDukuza

Priority is service delivery - Not removal of statues

I believe defacing colonial era statues and renaming streets and institutions is vengeful. I so wish that service delivery could get priority as is the case with the removal of the statues. Fellow South Africans, we have come a long way. Let us not allow anyone, regardless of their political status, to influence our minds and take away our morals, values and history. I believe the current blaming mob psychology about colonial statues is a relevant debate but the manner in which it is being carried out is wrong. There are so many opportunists in between the gaps created by this situation. It is so opportunistic of the 3 rd force to instruct its sheepish members to lead this unlawful act of downing statues. Remember, you can remove the statue, but the story behind them remains. Why doesn't the state security arrest those who publicly deface or bring down statues? How do you and I feel if this happens to our freedom fighters' statue (example Nelson Mandela)? Therefore I am saying the way to go about it is to leave the statues standing and erect our own. You can put a statue of a liberation fighter at Rhodes University but it won't be relevant to the institution. We live in a democratic country. Let's tolerate each other by remembering the past and the future. God bless South Africa.

Community Activist Roy Naidoo Darnall

Ilembe's impressive reaction time

With all the negative criticism that is usually levelled at Ilembe District Municipality, there are also instances when commendations are due.

I personally experienced phenomenal and efficient service last Saturday when a main water pipe supplying my building in King Shaka Street sprang a massive leak spraying water 3 metres into the sky. My personal assistant immediately called the Ilembe call centre. She was pleasantly greeted by Siyabonga Zondi who acknowledged the urgency and promised to send plumbers out instantaneously. Mhlaba Omusha Plumbers were on-site in under 5 minutes and expeditiously attended to the burst pipe within 30 minutes.

Well done to Siyabonga Zondi and the plumbing team. As citizens, this is all we expect from our municipalities - professional and efficient service!

Peacemaker attackerA late night drinking session turned

ugly when liquor once again ruined the fun. According to Luthando Mnyama he and a group of friends were drinking at about 9pm on Sunday night. One of his friends got into an argument with another person and he went to separate. To his surprise, his friend's attacker was joined by another person and they began hitting him with sticks. As a result of the attack he suffered a broken arm as well as abrasions to his body. Zola Mavela (33) and Musawenkosi Mabhena (21) are due back at court on 30 June 2015.

scenes have led to the arrest of Scelo Nkabinde (28). Nkabinde who was in custody on a charge of armed robbery had his fingerprints taken for that case. The computer system linked him to a housebreaking case in March 2007 when he broke into a house owned by Jeethlall Behari and stole electronic equipment and jewellery. He was also linked to another housebreaking where he stole electronic items and jewellery valued at R15000 and was l i n k e d t o a b r e a k - i n a t a policewoman's house in North Street where a firearm was stolen. He will formally apply for bail this week but his chances of being successful are remote.

Syndicate bustedPolice believe they have made a

breakthrough in their fight against organized shoplifting. Last week, police stopped an NRB registration Golf and found a variety of clothing stuffed into kit-bags. Their suspicions were raised as the clothing still had hangers on them. The driver claims he was hired by the female occupant. She alleges the clothing was given to her by a relative. Police will be visiting the various stores to determine whether the clothing was stolen or sold. In the

A bad Worker's DayBlessing Mchunu will not ever enjoy

celebrating Worker's Day again. He alleges that he and a group of friends were celebrating by having fun with alcohol. They were joined by another friend whom Mchunu ran to greet and welcome to the gathering. To his surprise he was struck in the face with a beer bottle. He approached his friend to find out the reason for the attack and was hit for a second time in the face with the bottle resulting in a deformity of his nasal passages. Zithulele Bhengu (35) is due back at court on 25 June in connection with the incident.

Night of insanityA 14-year-old Grade 9 learner has

become the victim of her own immaturity and stupidity. She alleges that on 26 April at 11am, she and a group of friends attended a function at Groutville. She consumed various types of alcohol until 6pm. Her 25-year-old boyfriend of one month joined them and she left with him and his friends in a vehicle. They purchased more liquor and she shared some with him and his friends before going to his place of residence. The friends left and he allegedly raped her several times during the course of the night. The culprit even showed her pictures of his two children and made various promises of expensive gifts to her. The following morning, she was dropped off near her house. When questioned about the incident, she told a relative that she was going to a rally. W h e n q u e s t i o n e d a b o u t f o r whereabouts, she informed the aunt that she was kidnapped and raped by unknown persons in a bakkie and walked home after the incident. She finally confessed that she had spent the night with her boyfriend who raped her. A 25-year-old taxi conductor was arrested and remanded in custody. He is expected to apply for bail this week.

Parasaraman of the River Nonoti area of Darnall, the Lord Shiva deity has ashes coming out of its right eye.

“My wife went to the temple one morning and found a whole heap of ashes at the Lord's feet.

She called my daughter Vineshri and asked her 'why she made a mess?' But my daughter did not,” he said. He added that he removed the heap of ashes and kept it in a brass prayer container.

Parasaraman went on to say that his family found more ashes the next day. He claims that the ashes started “accumulating since the start of Shivarathri.” The Shivarathri observance was on Thursday, 16 April this year.

The Xpress Times, upon the request of Parasaraman, visited his home in which the deity is housed in his outside temple.

Parasaraman at one point was thinking of installing surveillance cameras to investigate but was told that it was disrespectful.

The temple has since become a shrine for Hindus who visit from KwaDukuza and parts of Durban. The visitors receive the ashes from the family.

The Most Beautiful Thing in the Worldby Ella Kennen

“I am bored," announced the queen. Her advisor pressed his fingers together. "Some music, your majesty?" The queen gave a slight nod. But when the court musicians started playing something she had heard a dozen times before, she sent them away.

Her advisor tugged at his moustache. "The court acrobats, then?" The queen nodded again. But their flips and turns did not raise her spirits. "What you need," said the advisor, "is a true diversion. A contest, perhaps." The queen sat a little taller. "A contest, you say?" Then she sank back into her throne. "Whatever of?" Her advisor furrowed his brow. "New music, perhaps?" The queen waved her hand. "A baking competition?" The queen frowned.

Her advisor started to sweat. "I know! A contest of the best portrait of Her Highness.”

The queen chortled. "Please. I already know what I look like. Besides, the hall is brimming with portraits." She rose and started pacing. "I am tired of all this," she said, gesturing to the room. "I need a different sort of beauty. Something that can take one's breath away.”

She gestured to her scribe. "Let everyone know that the Queen is holding a contest for the most beautiful thing in the world. And the prize," she paused, "the prize shall be this crown.”

Her staff gasped. The queen's crown was pure gold, s tudded with magnificent gems. There was no treasure like it in the whole country. The announcement was made. Before long, a constant line of hopefuls formed. People showed their poetry, their daughters, even their animals. After several days, the queen had a pounding headache. "This is hopeless," she muttered. "Not quite hopeless, Your Majesty." The queen sat up, wondering who dare contradict her. A bearded man stood behind the palace guards. "I can put an end to this madness, Your Highness." He waved towards the long line of supplicants behind him.

The queen raised an eyebrow. "You have brought me the most beautiful thing?”

The man laughed. "Not I. Nor anyone here. I have stood in line for two days as your faithful servant to tell you that you seek that which cannot be brought to you. You must go to it." The man gave a deep bow. "That is all." The queen paused, astonished. When she found her voice again she asked "Whatever do you mean?" But the man was gone.

The queen's advisor twisted his hat. "Do not bother yourself with the prattle of a madman, Madam," he said. But the fever of an idea had struck the queen. "Send the rest home," she ordered of

the people still waiting in line. "I must prepare for a trip." The advisor nearly dropped his hat. "A trip? Where?" The queen smiled as she had not done since she was a child. "Elsewhere!" A Royal Trip, even one as odd as this, doesn't just happen. Wardrobes and food wagons must be prepared. Soldiers, footmen, and ladies-in-waiting must ready themselves. But after several days of bustle, the royal procession was ready. By now, the Queen was cured of her boredom, and almost delirious to see what awaited. Crowds gathered as the entourage made its way out of the city. The Queen leaned out the carriage window and held her crown high. "To the most beautiful thing in the world!" she cried.

"To the most beautiful," the crowds cheered back. The fever had caught, and spread.

The queen was not sure what she was seeking, or where to find it. But as her entourage rounded a hill, she looked back to her royal home and felt something stir within her. Between the glow of the setting sun and the gleam of the white towers, the scene looked like something out of a storybook. "Why," she wondered, "have I never seen my home this way before?" The queen

spent weeks travelling. She saw beauty in the peasants coaxing life out of the dirt. She saw it in the birds taking one last flight before roosting for the night. In a newly born calf. In the stars twinkling at night. But what was the most beautiful thing?

One day, the queen sailed a lake. In the middle of the water, she realized that she was at peace - and that she had been for many days. Suddenly, she understood. With all her might, she tore a piece of her crown off. She tossed the fragment into the lake and watched it slowly sink. "I am ready to return home," she announced. As she journeyed back, the queen left a piece of crown at a small country church. She left a piece at the root of a centuries-old tree. She placed a piece at the bottom of a lush valley and the top of a snow-capped moun ta in . When he r procession stumbled upon a spring, bubbling water from the ground, she added a piece there. She dug a piece into the newly turned dirt in a field. She threaded a piece into the mane a fine filly. Little by little, the queen's crown got smaller until nothing was left.

She had found the most beautiful thing. It was the world.

Get Down to Hi-Q Stanger for a battery Check up

The garage that services your car should check that clamps and connections to the battery are secure and free from corrosion, but there are a few simple tips you can follow to reduce the chance of your battery letting you down in the depths of winter;

If the battery is more than five years old and there's any sign of it struggling to start the car, get it replaced.

If you mostly do short journeys or leave the car standing for days at a time, invest in a modern battery conditioner/intelligent charger.

Check that everything electrical is turned off when you park up – even an interior light, boot light, can kill a battery when it's cold.

Switch off everything electrical and dip the clutch to reduce the load on the battery when you start a cold car.

TYRES EXHAUSTS SHOCKS BATTERIES BRAKES

In Need of a ServiceFirstly check the inner and outer edges of your tyres for uneven wear in the form of reduced tread depth. If there are any irregular tyre wear patterns or your car drifts to one side on a flat straight road, come in and have a qualified Hi-Q technician see to the problem before too much tyre damage is caused, unnecessary expenditure incurred and most important your motoring safety is compromised.

Safety TipsHave your vehicle's wheel alignment checked at least once a year, dependant upon the mileage you travel and the road surface conditions. Over time normal driving conditions takes it toll on a vehicle's steering and suspension, which could have an adverse effect on wheel alignment. Ask the technician to check your vehicles wheel alignment this ensures that all four tyres are in alignment and run together smoothly.

Voted retailer for 5 years running. No.1 tyre (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014)

is the adjusting of the wheel’s angles relative to the road surface

& the other wheels on your vehicle.

In order to ensure safe motoring &

reduce tyre wearit is imperative that your tyres

are properly aligned.

During winter months, keep abreast of weather reports in your area. If snow is predicted, make plans to leave early or arrive later. An alarm clock set to an earlier time can be a good friend in h e l p i n g y o u a v o i d difficulties.

If you can move a night trip

PRECAUTIONS: Warming up a car prior to travel is a common practice, but most engines don't need more than a minute at most to circulate oil to all internal parts. Check your vehicle's owner's manual for information about your engine.

Winter Driving tipsto daylight hours, do so. Not only is visibility better, but if your vehicle is stalled, you are more likely to receive prompt assistance during the daytime.

Prepare your vehicle for winter driving; use this checklist:

1. Check windshield wiper

blades to make sure they work properly. In some areas, snow blades are an effective alternative to conventional wiper blades.

2. Have your mechanic test the anti-freeze/coolant to provide the correct level of protection required in your driving area.

3. Make sure your tyres are properly inflated. Under-inflation can reduce the gripping action of tires because the tread will not meet the road surface as it was designed to do. Over-inflation has the same effect.

4. Keep your gas tank at least half-full. The extra volume can help reduce

moisture problems within your fuel system. It also adds helpful weight to your vehicle.

6. In rear-wheel drive vehicles, extra weight in the trunk may be helpful. Use care-- unsecured weight can shift while you are moving or if you have to stop suddenly. Bags of sand can provide weight and, if sprinkled on the ice, sand helps provide traction.

You and your passengers should all use safety belts.

· To make sure other drivers see you, always drive with your lights on. At night, in fog and heavy snow conditions, low beams may be more effective than high beams.

· Keep a light touch on the brakes. Even with anti-lock

braking systems (sometimes called ABS), apply light pressure to avoid locking the brakes and causing a skid. Pumping the brake pedal should be smooth action, going from light to firm. Tip toe to slow is a good motto for winter drivers.

· Keep your vehicle s t o c k e d w i t h s i m p l eemergency equipment in case you do get stalled or have an accident. Consider keeping these items in your vehicle: blanket or extra c l o t h e s ; c a n d l e w i t hmatches; snacks; beverages (never alcohol); flares; cellular phone; a small s h o v e l ; f l a s h l i g h t ;windshield scraping device; tow rope; bag of sand or cat litter for traction; long jumper cables.

It doesn't matter whether you're a recent graduate with your first real job or someone other than the first-time car buyer, the car-buying process is never filled with as much uncertainty as it is the first time. To that end, we've come up with some tips to help with the process. First, a little history: Car buying began in parallel with the first car sold. And despite credit given to Karl Benz for the automobile's invention, we've not been able to find its first-time buyer. We've compiled this list as a Top Ten tips on what to buy, how to buy it and where to buy it.

1. Establish a realistic budget: This figure is generally based on what you can afford per month. The ideal is to pay cash, but in most instances when considering a new (or just newer) car, the nature of the transaction price often requires

the leverage of financing. So, look at your cost of living in all the more important areas, like shelter, food, health insurance. Once those are calculated, the remainder could be spent on a car payment, fuel, car insurance and for cars without a warranty mechanical maintenance.

2. Know what you can spend monthly: Your level of indebtedness is different f r o m y o u r m o n t h l y commitment. Neither one for a first-time buyer should be out of balance in comparison to your other assets. Again, this is the base obligation; insurance, fuel and periodic maintenance are above and beyond this.

3 . E s t a b l i s h y o u r transportation needs: A MINI Convertible or Fiat Cabriolet may be the car of the moment, but is it going to work for you as a day-in/day-out piece of transportation? Conversely, you may think you need a minivan or pickup for ALL OF YOUR STUFF, but on those occasions when you're moving to a new apartment or, uh, moving home, you can rent a van. Given the cost of fuel, insurance and in many cities monthly parking, don't buy what you don't need. And perhaps consider renting what you need, only when you need it.

4. Identify and prioritize your wants: The first-time purchase doesn't need to be y o u r b e - a l l / e n d - a l l

Tips for first time car buyersacquisition, but you should still pay attention to your want list, as this isn't a process you need to repeat every 18 months.

5. Do your research (it's never been easier): There is an amazing amount of both information and perspective on new cars and their late-model alternatives. Once you've digested it all, balance it with your gut instincts or those instincts of someone whose gut you trust. And be proactive; if you see someone with a car you have an interest in and they're not doing 175km per hour stop and ask them about their ownership experience.

: For most of car-selling history the act of buying a car for the first time has run akin to getting a colonoscopy for the first time: Come in, lay down, you're not gonna' feel a thing. But despite our almost inherent misgivings, the salesman on the showroom is closer to a normal person than you might think. Most of the abnormal ones we've heard from reliable sources end up selling something less precious; let your parents worry about them. And while new and late-model cars have never been more reliable, they still need attention and that attention should be easy to access. Compare dealer locations and, if all other things are equal, showroom environments. We tend to stay away from dealerships where two-thirds of the sales staff is sitting or standing at the front entrance.

7. Take a test drive:Nothing is more important in your decision process than

how you feel behind the wheel. And so many variables come into play seat height, wheel adjustment, steering feel, throttle tip-in, outward visibility, control layout, etc. that you simply must spend a reasonable amount of time driving the car. And that time should be more than five minutes on someone's idea of a stop-and-go test route. Take at least half an hour, while trying stop-and-go, freeway merging and freeway speeds. And if your sales rep you know, the normal guy trying to make a living doesn't have the 30 minutes, find a time when he or she does, or take the time to find another dealership.

8. Determine the proper purchase price:Once you've decided what you like and have already

established what you can afford it's time to arrive at a purchase price. A credit union should also be able to provide you with perspective, and may have a contact on the showroom floor. An important note regarding referrals: Get the referral before taking another salesman's time for a walkaround and demo. Most of these people work on commission, and commissions are notoriously small. If you plan on working with a referral, start with a referral. Finally, when discussing what you want to pay, don't reveal a "per month" number; that's the oldest trick in the book. If you're thinking you can budget R50 000 and you're looking at a R55 000 car tell them R 50 000. You can always work up...while it's much harder to back up.

9. Secure financing, or know your options:Financing issues are somewhat like the purchase price;

there has been an exponential growth in the number of resources. That, however, is mitigated by your lack of credit history or, in an increasing number of instances, marginal credit history. The last thing you want, however, is to be in a room with an F&I (Finance and Insurance) rep, and he or she is holding all the cards; the deck if you will is stacked

against you. Better to talk with your credit union, bank or insurance provider (many have the capability and desire to finance your purchase), and line up your financing in advance. You can always go with the dea l e r op t i on i f i t ' s competitive, but never approach it as if the dealer is the only money game in town.

10. Enjoy the processBe stimulated by the sheer

variety of options available, and the genuine creativity that goes into today's automotive menu. With low financing rates and literally hundreds of great cars to choose from, your options have never been better (especially in the "entry-level" category) and car ownership never more rewarding. Take your time in the process, and you'll be delighted with the outcome for at least the first 48 (or 60) monthly payments.

Grove End trounced Frendz in straight sets (2-0) to book their place in the final of the Caminamix Services Corporate K.O. Cup final.

quarter of their semi-final clash against Frendz, trailing 2-7. But, once they got their act together they pressurized their rivals into umpteen u n f o r c e d e r r o r s .Despite the two regulatory time-outs Frendz buckled under pressure going down 17-25 in the opening set.

Frendz started the 2nd set in similar fashion, hoping that the change of sides will swing the pendulum in their favour. But, once again they led 7-2

and hit yet another stone wall. They battled to outwit the veteran Manor campaigners, who stood solid as a rock and picked up every missile thrown at them.

Manor cruised into the final with a fluent straight set victory (2-0) after clinching the 2nd set (25-16). M

Meanwhile, Teachers, who have yet to beat Grove End in the corporate ranks, were all at sea in their semi-final clash. Their below par performance

was underlined by the superiority of Preggie Pillay, who scored nine points in a row with his wicked, curling over-arm service.

Teachers suffered a 25-13 loss in the opening set and merely went through the motion of the game after slumping to a 25-14 defeat in the 2nd set.

Officials are expected to put up the "full-house" signs tonight well before the 8pm kick-off. Grove End beat Manor in their Pool A round robin clash a fortnight ago and are sure to start favourites going into tonight's final.

They have been virtually invincible in the past two years and are expected to take a power of beating. Grove End will be pinning their hopes on Pillay, Bevlin Thaver, Raj Naidoo and Neven Baldeo to lead them to honours.

But, write off Manor at your p e r i l ! T h e s e v e t e r a n campaigners love the big

stage and will be hoping to avenge their defeat on Wednesday night. It promises to be the biggest clash in the corporate ranks and definitely not for the faint-hearted.

To whet the appetite of volleyball enthusiasts, Frendz and Teachers will contest the curtain-raiser in the playoffs for 3rd spot at . Teachers are expected to test the resolve of the Frendz outfit.
