Thursday, October 3, 2013 6 MICHIGAN K.I.D.S. | WWW.DNIE.COM Tiger Time October is baseball playoff time, and once again, the Detroit Tigers are to be in the race. At Yak’s Corner press time, we didn’t know whom the Tigers would be playing in the American League playoffs. The regular season ended with some fun Tiger Tales. Did you hear about any of these? • Prince Fielder stopping to have a nacho snack from a fan during the game. • A record crowd at the games, with more than 3 million attending this season. • A wild comeback win in the 12th inning over the Chicago White Sox. What are you doing to show your Tigers pride? Email us at [email protected]. Presidential Permission Alanah Poullard is only 5, but when it comes to getting a note for missing school, she knows whom to ask. The kindergartner was visiting the White House in a special tour for Wounded Warriors and their families. The event was for armed services members that were hurt in battles. She asked President Barack Obama for a note that excused her from school – and he wrote one. That’s what White House Press Photographer Pete Souza tweeted. The Washington Post noted that it’s not the first time the president has written a school excuse note. Penguins Galore Get ready, penguin fans. There will be plenty of penguins in the Detroit Zoo’s future. The Yak already loves the Penguinarium, and now the Detroit Zoological Society said they have received a $10 million donation to help build The Polk Family Penguin Conservation Center. The center will allow visitors to see a close look at deep- water dives with views above and below. What penguins will you see there? The same species you can see now in the Penguinarium — rockhopper, macaroni and king with the addition of the gentoo, a species that will be new to the Zoo. Knitted Stegosaurus The Yak headed out to the Cranbrook Institute of Science for a Sunday walk and what did he see? The long-time stegosaurus statue decked out in knitwear. The story of the knitted dino is quite a yarn (excuse the pun) that has been making national news, from television to newspapers, including the Washington Post. The Associated Press reported in the Post that the museum was surprised on a Monday morning to find the stegosaurus all decked out. A letter with only the name “Jenn” said she knitted the project to thank the museum for inspiring her love of science. In her letter, Jenn said that Steggy gave her a place to be herself. “As a girl, I was teased for liking paleontology and wanting to play dinosaurs with the boys,” she wrote. The Yak will be back with more on “Steggy.” Stay tuned!
