DIARY OF A STONE AGE CHILD
Dear Diary,
Today was the most incredible day of my life. Shall I tell you what I did?
I woke feeling cold and looked up to see my younger brother, Stoat, leaving. The fire had
gone out and the deer skin that my mother, Fennel, had draped carefully over me last night
had fallen off, so my bare feet could feel the chilly autumn breeze blowing in. It was time to
get up. Emerging from the tipi, I looked out at the hills beyond our camp to see the sun
slowly rising. I had jobs to do that morning but first I had to help my brother to gather some
breakfast. We took our rabbit skin bags to the edge of the wood where the blackberries grew
and filled them up to the brim. We couldn’t resist gobbling a few berries as we picked,
because the hunters had not had a successful day out yesterday.
Returning to camp, everyone was glad to see us and we sat around the freshly-built fire to
eat. My father, Willow, gave people jobs for the day as we filled our bellies. Since
midsummer, my brother and I have been learning how to make and sharpen flint tools. It
was hard work at first, but I have made spears, hand axes, hammers and arrow heads for
myself and my family. We need tools to hunt and build our houses with. Each tool is better
than the last.
After I had finished making a flint spear for my eldest cousin, Fox, I took it to him proudly.
He was obviously delighted and exclaimed, “Otter! What a sharp edge. I shall take this out
to the hunt later and I hope that you’ll join me.” What could I say? I had never been
hunting before as I am only nine. I dashed to ask my mother, who was cleaning animal
skins, and she agreed that I was now old enough to join the elder men and hunt.
Unfortunately, we had to wait a while until the sun was lower in the sky as the animals
could rarely be seen when the sun was high. Feeling excited and nervous, I followed ten men
a long distance from home. When I looked behind us, our camp was out of sight. There
would be plenty of meat tonight!
When we returned to the camp, the younger children had made nettle soup with the women,
just in case there was no meat. My mother rushed up and gave me a hug. “Well done Otter,
you brought them good luck in the hunt! We shall eat well tonight. Let’s have a feast!” she
laughed happily. I gulped down some soup and smiled. As the sun set, we sang old songs
and rejoiced with a dance around the fire. Suddenly, I needed to sleep, so I crawled into my
bed by the fire and tucked my toes under the deer skin. What an amazing day!

Monday 27th April Action: Add detail using an adverbial phrase
Choose a main clause, and add detail using at least one adverbial phrase from the
table above.
Remember:
Phrases can go before or after the main clause.
Make sure your sentence makes sense.
Add a capital letter and a full stop.
Put a comma after each phrase and the main clause (except the last one – that’s
where the full stop goes!)
Here is an example:
Later on, the children were lost, in the dark forest.
Challenge! Make up your own adverbial phrases to go with one of the main clauses
above.
Adverbial Phrases Main Clause
Time – when? Place – where? yesterday evening in the morning later on as soon as possible at break time during lunch in a few minutes before long after school within seconds quite slowly at first tomorrow night
in the park at school in the field outside in the hall around the corner on the playground from the castle in front of the fountain lying in bed in the dark forest beside the lake under the ground
we walk the dog John eats breakfast tidy your room I went to the park it will be time for PE he cycled to school Jake hurt his finger Emma got told off she runs away they are going to the cinema the children were lost they formed a plan Jenny played football
Task 1: Identify whether the sentence is in the past or past present tense. Then rewrite the sentence changing
the tense. For example:
Julius ate all of his dinner. Past Present
Julius eats all of his dinner.
1) Rupert wanted to go outside and explore. Past Present
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) The two black cats guarded the stairs. Past Present
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Rupert’s family thought the ice cream was tasty. Past Present
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Task 2: Can you change these sentences from the simple past tense to the present perfect tense? Remember the
present perfect tense uses the word ‘have’ or ‘has’ in its sentence. The present perfect connects the past to the
present. An example of the present perfect tense:
Has lived: She has lived here all her life.
Has done: He has finished his homework.
Have been: We have been to Canada.
1. I drove to work today.
2. Sam ate the last piece of cake.
3. Dave travelled to Dover for a meeting.
Stone Age Boy
By Satoshi Kitamura.
An amazing thing happened to me. I was wandering in the wood when I
tripped and found myself falling down, down, down. When I woke up, I was
in a cold, dark place. I could see day light and I stumbled towards it. Outside,
everything was different. I realised I was lost. Completely lost. So I walked
and walked and walked.....
Then, to my relief, I saw someone – a girl. She was about my age, but she
didn’t look like any of the girls I knew. And I don’t think I looked like any of
the boys she knew. She took me home to meet her family – and what a family
it was! They looked very strange, but they were kind to me and gave me some
stew. I couldn’t understand anything they were saying, though I worked out
my new friend’s name was Om. Then I must have fallen asleep.
The next morning, Om showed me round the camp. Everyone seemed busy and
had a job to do. Over the next few days I saw so much I’d never seen before.
Om’s people had no knives and forks, no plastic, no metal even. Everything
they had was made of wood, stone, animal skins or bones. I saw
them.....making tools, using tools, preparing and cooking food.
One afternoon we went to the river. The little ones picked berries and nuts, but
Om and I watched the men fishing. They held their pointed spears high and
stood as still as trees. Then, suddenly, swoosh!
As the days became weeks, Om and her people taught me many things. I was
very happy. Then one day Om took me to a special place. We walked a long
way until we came to the mouth of a cave. Om struck flint stones together to
make fire. She lit a torch and we went in. WOW! It took me a moment to
realise the animals were only painting. In the flickering light of the torch they
looked real, as if they were running all around us. Om went over to the tools
and paints the artists had left and began to draw. Suddenly, I saw something
move in the darkness. It was a bear, a big furious cave bear! I shouted at Om
to run and turned to face the bear with my spear. I felt very small.
Suddenly the ground gave way........and I found myself falling down, down,
down. When I woke up the bear had gone. So had Om. I rushed outside. The
air felt........different. Warmer. I walked a long way, calling for Om. But I never
found her. Instead I found I was back home. When I told my family what had
happened, they didn’t believe me. They said I’d only been gone a few hours
and I must have fallen asleep and dreamt it.
Years passed, but I never forgot my friend Om. I am an archaeologist now
[that’s me in the glasses]. Everywhere I go, I look for signs of Om. And I never
stop learning from her and her people. Was it a dream?
Maybe.........................Maybe not.
