TERM TOPICS COVERED

1 Introduction to Drama. A brief reminder of the rules and expectations in these lessons. Ice breakers to positively begin the year.

Roald Dahl’s Characters. A moment to celebrate and explore the diverse and fantastically brilliant characters, created by this genius!

Exploring monologues and duologues. Developing advanced performance skills. Prepare for Shakespeare in English (T2); utilising Rob John’s Living With Lady Macbeth.

2 Elysium. An introduction to physical theatre and stylised performance skills.

Arabian Nights. The students explore extracts from Dominic Cooke’s RSC adaptation that celebrates the power of the imagination and storytelling, told through a mixture of song, dance, puppetry and illusion.

Play skills. Preparations for The Leaver’s Show.

CHEMISTRY

TERM TOPICS COVERED

1 Patterns of behaviour (the reactivity series) Extracting metals from their ores. Revise oxidation/reduction reactions in this context. Revision of key topics. A range of scholarship papers from the different schools are used throughout the term, either as preps or in the lesson and the pupils are taught how to analyse the questions before answering them.

2 Targeted revision using past exam questions: chemical reactions: types of chemical reactions (oxidation/combustion reactions of metals and non-metals, thermal decomposition reactions, physical changes, no reactions, neutralization reactions), the limestone cycle, how mass is conserved when chemical reactions take place. Acids and bases. Elements, compounds, mixtures. Separating mixtures. Mock exams and feedback. Again the scholarship group works on a range of past papers, whilst continuing to carry out experiments to reinforce learning and for those sitting a practical examination.

3 Targeted revision using whole past exam papers (emphasis on exam technique).

The scholarship group works on extension topics and carry out practical investigations.

BIOLOGY

1 Living things in their environment (food chains/webs, the carbon cycle) Health and disease. Variation. (8S also revise the heart’s structure and function, including the 3 types of blood vessels) A range of scholarship papers from the different schools are used throughout the term, either as preps or in the lesson and the pupils are taught how to analyse the questions before answering them.

2 Structured revision of the main topics (these will be targeted at each group and can be different from year to year according to what children find more difficult; usually there is time to revise most of the year 7 work: cells, classification, photosynthesis, nutrition and digestion, respiration and breathing) with emphasis on exam technique. Mock exams and feedback. Again the scholarship group works on a range of past papers, whilst continuing to carry out experiments to reinforce learning and for those sitting a practical examination.

The pupils will start the term by studying three stories of how Jesus behaved towards outcasts in his society. These will be the stories of Zacchaeus, Levi and the women who wiped Jesus’ feet. The rest of the term will be spent researching the lives of modern day disciples of Christ who lived out the Gospel message in their own lives. The pupils will produce a short biography on any one of the following people, with guidance from the teacher.

‘Hazard Hunting’ in the DT workshop & classroom. Extending knowledge of electronics – identifying components & understanding circuits. Developing soldering skills to assemble a timer circuit. Business challenge – in teams, develop a commercial product incorporating this timer circuit and make a prototype. Pitch ideas with costings to potential customers. Sustainability – aluminium as a material – the Alupro/Alfed Design Challenge. Introduction to CADCAM. Design a patchwork square using 2D computer drawing software. They will use the sewing machines to accurately make their patchwork design.

2 Developing skills – accurate cutting, finishing and forming acrylic, including using a jig; introduction to brazing to join metals. Investigating abstract designs, including the work of Alexander Calder, to inspire their designs for a mobile or 3D sculpture. They will work individually, or as part of a group, to design and make a sculpture or mobile to display in a public space in the school.

1 Sport: SAQs – Speed Agility Quickness drills. Skills developed: Developing coordination, balance and core strength through a series of fun, dynamic exercises.
