Writing• Ensure she proofreads all work; ideally out loud, to

ensure that her work is accurately spelled, punctuated, paragraphed, appropriate for the reader etc.

• Encourage the use of a dictionary/thesaurus • Encourage her to use her reading to support her

writing. She could look out for vocabulary, characters etc. and adapt them for her own writing

Year 8 MathematicsStudents are set in classes from 1 – 5 based on their mathematical ability. All students are stretched and challenged in every lessons.

Year 8 Mathematics

The new GCSE focuses on Mathematical fluency (the ability to connect or apply different areas of mathematics) and the ability to problem solve.

Therefore, your daughters Maths lessons will incorporate these elements.

HeaderThe Curriculum

• In Year 8 students are taught in mixed ability form groups.

• They will develop their understanding of Biological, Chemical and Physical concepts (studying modules of each). Assessment takes the form of end of unit tests and specific assessed activities throughout the module.

• All assessment including an end of year test will be used to work out which set is best for her ability in Year 9.

• Spend 10 minutes reading through previous work with your daughter.

• Have high expectations of your daughters work and progress.

• Ensure that your daughter completes homework and practises examination questions given in class.

• Read and discuss science in the news. Try the BBC website or the BBC magazine ‘Focus’. Another good magazine is ‘How it Works’.

Year 8 Aims for the Year

• Attendance – At least 96% attendance to school is ideally required alongside being punctual to school and to lessons.

• Behaviour & Work Ethic – Correct uniform, organized with the correct equipment for lessons, meeting homework deadlines, and demonstrating high levels of engagement and quality of work in the classroom.

Subject Setting……

Science & English are not set, they are taught in Tutor Groups during Year 8.

Maths are set in groups from 1-5, and this remains fluid throughout the year depending on Mathematical ability.

• Students will choose their options this academic year.

• 3 year KS4 with Year 9 being a transition year.

• The year group will be given a KS4 Option booklet and Curriculum booklet.

• Students will choose 4 GCSE options alongside the Core Subjects.

• Parents Evening – 15 March (x-side) & 22 March (y-side)

• Options deadline – 26 March followed by 1:1 interviews for final confirmation of choices.
