YEAR ONE SPELLING TERM 2

JOLLY GRAMMAR

Dear Parents/ Caregivers,

Welcome to Term 2! This term we are focusing on sound blends in our spelling program.

Our spelling program is based on the concepts taken from the Jolly Grammar program. Each Monday your child will receive a list of words. The children will practice these words at school and at home. The list of words are based on sound blends. Each weeks focus blend will be used for the Friday spelling test.

The Friday spelling tests will consist of words from the list that they received for homework plus some unseen words using that sound blend. This will show if the children are learning about using the sound blend rather than just memorising a list of words. By using this approach, we hope to see students spelling strategies improve.

An example of this would be the homework list has –at words. The list might be cat, rat and sat. The children will be tested on some of these words plus an additional 3 or 4 words that they have not seen before that use this blend like mat and that. This is a new approach for the Year Ones so we will be teaching the children about this in class over the next few weeks.

At the end of the spelling test there will also be 3 dictation sentences. These sentences will be created using basic sight words and the sound blend words. This will show the children’s understanding of using the words correctly in the context of writing. This is a holistic approach to learning about spelling in the context of writing.
