The Yinger Singers (From “Twelve Yinger Singers Notable Chorus: Uniting Sextette, Quartettes andDuos Long Popular for Organ-like Harmony and Sparking Versatility.”

When the late Rev. George D. Yinger was pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Quincy, MI, hebegan to train his four oldest children with rare directing ability. Their ages then ranged from five to ten,the youngest being able to carry the melody in four part harmony with accuracy and skill. The “YingerJuvenile Quartet” was immediately popular. It caught the ear of the manager of a small Chautauqua, and sand in a regular lyceum circuit that first summer. This original quartet, through the years sandtogether before hundred of audiences—in evening concerts, on the great Methodist Centenary programin Columbus, in the cantonments during the war—and one year its members were enrolled as freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior in Albion College, during which time they sand in 133 concerts throughoutthe middle west as “The Yinger Quartet of Albion College.” They were noted for exquisite harmony andcharm.

When this older quartet left home to go to college, a unique situation still prevailed. There remainedat home four more children so nearly counterparts of the older four that strangers hearing the youngerquartet were astonished that the Yinger children had changed so little. Building on the experience of theolder group, these children perfected many difficult musical arrangements.

In 1928 the two older boys married talented girls who, combined with the original quartet formed theorganization known as the “Yinger Sextette of Boston University.” There three young men and threeyoung women all attended Boston University as regularly enrolled students, defraying expenses byconcert singing in 99 different programs in New England communities. The quartet also sang regularly onSunday mornings in the First M. E. Church of Boston. The following year the Sextette traveled from coastto coast, singing to large and enthusiastic audiences.

During the school year of 1933-34 another combination was formed. The third son had married a youngwoman talented not only in music but in chalk artistry. This couple, with the three youngest boys of thefamily entered DePauw University and became known as the “Yinger Singers of DePauw University.”

These various groups have received plaudits from musicians, governors, bishops, outstanding clergymenand laymen from one end of America to the other.

In later years, the Twelve Yinger Singers Notable Chorus was formed, which included all the Yingerchildren but Paul, as well as four of the boys’ wives, Ruth, Aileen, Alberta, and Madelon.

“The Yinger Yarner” This publication was sent out once a month to members of the Yinger family allover the country. It was a mimeographed newsletter printed by the Yingers. Each of the family branchescontributed news to its columns, saving a lot of time and money in correspondence.
