On Sunday, November 16th, several Yosemite members attend-ed the EuroSunday Modesto, Coffee and Cars gathering, at McHenry Village in Modesto. While the weather was a bit cool, there were a total of 28 cars present, with 26 being euro cars. Porsche dominated attendance with 8 cars present.

EuroSunday meets the 3rd Sunday of each month at McHenry Village from 8:00 am to about 10:00 am. There are other chapters such as Sacramento, Silicon Valley and East Bay. If you haven’t attended, take the time to do so. It’s a fun gathering.

You can check the main EuroSunday web page for event dates and locations, and for Modesto, the EuroSundayModesto Face-book page.

What is EASY?JB: It is an acronym for European Auto Salvage Yard. We have been here ever since doing vintage Porsche parts, dismantling Porsches and doing a little bit component repairs or rebuilding. The bulk of our business is selling used parts from dismantled Porsches. How long have you been in businessJB: January ’78 is when we officially opened the doors. What has changed since you started EASYJB: The Internet changed everything. I have been very slow to adapt. I prefer to do business the old fashion way... face-to-face. It has affected our ability to buy cars. We used to buy a lot of cars at insurance companies salvage yard, but I have not bought a car at an insurance company auction in a few years. I used to buy three or four a month. Most of our sales when we started out were walk in business. Now people just call you on the phone or email and give a credit card number. What attracted you to PorscheJB: I just liked the way they were built. I like the performance. I bought my first Porsche right after I got out of the service. I bought a ’68 912 in 1970. I got it through the business I was working at. It was a recovered theft, so I had to purchase a motor and seats. I drove that for a number of years before I upgraded that in ’73 for a ’71 911. Frankly, I also just like the people that drive them. What cool cars have you ownedJB: My coolest car is the one I still own, which is my ’71 911. I have gradually modified it over the years. It is an R Gruppe hot rod. I have a ’65 356C coupe. It is a fabulous car and I enjoy driving that. I also have a ’62 356B Cabriolet that I restored from a rolled over total back in the 80’s. I have a ’67 Chevelle SS Con-vertible. At one time I had a 356 Carrera 2 sunroof coupe.Which one was your favoriteJB: That is a tough one. I guess my favorite is the one I am driving at the time. I really really enjoy driving the 356C. Overall, I probably get more enjoyment out of driving that car then the rest of them. The 911 is kind of a thrill ride. It is raw bones…

extremely fast and a car you can get in trouble in. The 356 is very balanced and keeps up with modern traffic. So if I had to have just one car... it would be the 356C. Any you regret selling JB: Well, you can’t really look back. My ’58 356 Speedster race car is the one that I would like to have back. It was an absolute ground up nut and bolt restoration. It was a race car all its life. It was retired like in 1969, and I took it from there and back dated it. It has Carrera brakes on it. It is the one car that I probably went further with than anything I have ever done. What is the next fun car you can see yourself owningJB: I think it would be a Cayman. I could see myself getting a Cayman. Last year at the Sonoma Infineon Raceway driving two 911s and two different Caymans, I came away saying by far and away my favorite car was the Cayman S. Then this year I went one step further with the Cayman GTS, and came away with the same conclusion. Air-cooled or Water-cooledJB: I am an air-cooled guy all the way. I grew up with air-cooled cars and in fact in our business we don’t deal with water-cooled cars at all. We pretty much stop at ’89. I do 944s and stuff like that.Opinions on air-cooled vs. water-cooledJB: I think it is apples and oranges. The water-cooled cars have been around a long time now. I think people that have grown up with water-cooled cars, and haven’t dealt with air-cooled cars, probably love their water-cooled just like us dyed in the wool air-cooled guys love the air-cooled cars. They both certainly have their good points and their bad points. I am not going to look down my nose at a water-cooled car. What do you like about your jobJB: I like working with the cars, but more than that the people. I have made lots of friends over the years. We have our cars and coffee here on the first Saturday of every month and upwards of one hundred cars show up. I really enjoy dealing with my clients. What gets you excitedJB: Lately, I probably get the biggest charge out of racing our $500 914 in the 24 Hours of Le Mons races.
