Kritsada YubanyongBA Music, previously studied the International Foundation Year

Music undergraduate and oboist Kritsada came to study Music from his native Thailand, after successfully completing the International Foundation Year at the University. Kritsada says of his time here ‘I now have the knowledge to develop myself further both in terms of musical skills and English language, as well as socially. I aspire to take some of these valuable skills back to my country and inspire others.’

Kritsada has been heavily involved with Music societies since arriving at Southampton, and regularly performs with the student-run Sinfonietta society, which paired with his academic studies has given him confidence as a performer. He says; ‘There are lots of facilities to support students here, and I have taken advantage of many of these. It is an extremely lively and interesting place, and you will learn a huge amount whilst you’re here. I would highly recommend the course to others’.

Composing for Cochlear ImplanteesA cochlear implant (CI) can enable severely or profoundly deaf people to perceive sounds. Although CIs can provide excellent speech perception in quiet environments, current devices are very poor at conveying pitch information and therefore many CI users express dissatisfaction when listening to music through their implant. In this project, through the creative process of composition, CI users and researchers gain a better understanding of how music can be appreciated and enjoyed through a CI. The impact of this research is enormous: it brings music back into the lives of people who have been denied it, sometimes for decades.

Music at Southampton is at the leading edge of research and practice worldwide. We share your passion for creating, performing and appreciating music.

Our award-winning concert hall, Turner Sims

Course structure

We teach almost every kind of music from a wide variety of perspectives. You will be taught by world-leading researchers, composers and performers, and can tailor your degree with additional optional modules to suit your interests and career ambitions. A mixture of styles is positively encouraged.

Individual modules listed in this brochure may vary from year to year, but these examples demonstrate some of the different topics you might explore as part of your degree.

Performance excellence

Performance is our passion. Our student-led societies, from the Southampton University Symphony to the funky Jazzmanix singers, are a key part of the university’s cultural scene, in residence at the Turner Sims Concert Hall and on tour. We offer an imaginative curriculum, flexible course structure and superb teaching from internationally renowned performers and recording artists. Performance at Southampton is about giving you the space to try new things: you will never be tied down to one style. You can choose to focus on solo or ensemble performance throughout your course in any musical style from classical to pop and beyond. There will be many opportunities to perform at Turner Sims and further afield. The university instrument collection includes concert-quality pianos, historical keyboard instruments, several fine violins and bows, historical strings and wind instruments and a fully equipped percussion room. These are complimented by a new state-of-the-art electronic music studio.

Understanding musical worlds

From medieval polyphony to global hip hop, our music degree courses provide a broad musical education covering history, culture and society taught in exciting research-led modules. Our course does not favour one kind of music over another, and our flexible approach means that you can choose modules from any other discipline to complement your music studies. In addition, you can study modern languages, web science, management, mathematics, acoustics, philosophy and many other subjects. You will be taught in tutorials, seminars and lectures by world-class academics: our staff have PhDs from Princeton, New York University, Cornell, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, Sussex and Kings College London. Music at Southampton was ranked in the top two in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Our skills-oriented training will provide valuable transferable skills to prepare you for any career that requires critical thinking, teamwork and writing skills.

Connecting to communities

Our music crosses boundaries. Regional and national outreach projects aim to inspire you as a young musician, providing opportunities for music-making in the community and enabling you to help people benefit from the therapeutic effects of music. Modules in music therapy are among our most popular. We work hard in our local community to give something back to our neighbourhood while enriching your experience and career prospects. Outreach activities include the Southampton University Symphony Orchestra schools outreach programme (‘Baby SUSO’), primary and secondary school placements, our student-led Music in Care Homes project and innovative Cochlear Implant research.

Excellent facilities

Southampton enjoys extensive music facilities incorporating well-equipped teaching spaces and rehearsal rooms. You will have access to 18 practice rooms in addition to larger rehearsal spaces both within the department and at Turner Sims, as well as practice facilities in some of our halls of residence. Our electronic and computer music studios–completely refurbished and expanded in 2014–are state-of-the-art. Our department resources include a dedicated music computing cluster of networked multimedia workstations with internet access and music software. You can also access facilities and expertise at Southampton’s world-leading Institute for Sound and Vibration Research and Web Science Institute.

Study abroad

We positively encourage you spend part of your degree soaking up a different musical culture at one of our growing number of study abroad partners. You can easily study abroad for an academic year or a semester at many universities around the world, including the University of Paris (Sorbonne), the University of Madrid, the University of Venice, the University of Texas at Austin, Chinese University of Hong Kong and Ewha Womans University (Seoul). More partners are added yearly.
