As proud as we are of our past, Bentonville is just as excited about the opportunities for our community that lie ahead. Whether you arrive by plane, train, bus, bike or car expect to be energized by all the remarkable signs of growth our community is experiencing.

Although many visitors originally come to Bentonville for business at the Home Office of Walmart or Sam’s Club, there are many other reasons to mix business with pleasure on your trip. There is time for work and play here and no matter you preferences count on finding the very best of arts and theater, hiking and biking, and a burgeoning culinary scene.

As we enjoy continued growth and prosperity as a community, one of the most exciting projects to date is the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. This premier national art institution dedicated to American art and artist is founded by Alice Walton, daughter of the late Sam & Helen Walton. The Museum houses works from American artists along with galleries dedicated to regional art and artists and rotating exhibits.

The entire Crystal Bridges campus sits on 120 acres of lush forest, and the Museum gets its name from a nearby natural spring and from the unique bridge construction incorporated into the building design. The glass and wood design by world-renowned architect Moshie Safdie features a series of pavilions divided by two spring-fed ponds. Visitors experience not only the museum, but also the park-like setting of a series of urban trails peppered with interactive sculpture and gardens connecting the campus to beautiful Downtown Bentonville.

Founded in 1836 and named in honor of Senator Thomas Hart Benton, Bentonville was the first town established in Benton County, once the leading agricultural region in the state.

The city’s nickname, “The Fruit City,” was earned in part by the fact that Benton County was the largest apple-producing county in the United States – with an unprecedented 300+ varieties originating from Bentonville itself.

Blight devastated the area’s fruit industry in the early 1900’s and forced the community to concentrate on local business which continues to thrive. While strolling the Bentonville Square today, it is easy to imagine a turn of the century bustling community-everything from an opera house and movie theaters to doctor’s offices and merchant shops, all the way to a distillery and more have found a home in downtown Bentonville over the years. The statue in the center of the town square was dedicated in 1908 in memory of Confederate soldiers and is to this day one of the most photographed vignettes in our community.

On a sunny May morning in 1950, a young man by the name of Sam Walton opened the doors to the family business on the west side of the Bentonville Square. It is from that single location with its simple red and white striped awning – which is now the official Walmart Visitor Center – that the Walton’s breathed life into what would become one of the world’s largest retail empires. The rest, as they say, is history.

COMPTON GARDENS479.254.3870 www.comptongardens.org

Compton Gardens and Conference Center are named after Dr. Neil Compton, a noted Bentonville physician, writer, photographer, founder of the Ozark Society, and savior of the Buffalo River. The Conference Center is the re-modeled home of Dr. Compton and now serves as a rental facility for seminars, conferences, workshops, retreats, intimate weddings, and private events. The green oasis that surrounds the conference center consists of 6.5 acres of native woodland which serves as a regional destination garden.

MUSEUM OF NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY479.273.2456www. monah.us

Founder David Bogle invites you to take a walk through pre-historic times in one of the areas most fascinating museums. The facility is divided into five different time periods that will guide you through the constant changing lives of the

Native Americans as seen through their artifacts. Displays feature relics dating from over 14,000 years ago to more recent historic times. Large groups are welcome and encouraged to make reservations. The museum is located at 202 SW “O” Street in Bentonville.

WALMART VISITOR CENTER479.273.1329www.walmartstores.com

One of the most popular attractions in Bentonville is the Walmart Visitor Center located on the Downtown Bentonville Square at 105 North Main Street. It is the original location of the Walton’s 5 & 10, the retail venture launched by Sam Walton in 1950. View everything from the exact re-creation of Sam’s personal office to his favorite old Ford truck as well as many other Walton family treasures. The center underwent major renovations and expansions in 2010-2011 to include more interactive exhibits and displays as well as the Spark Café, a great place to grab a snack and a cup of coffee or latte. More renovations are planned for 2012 to include meeting and gallery space. The Walmart Visitor Center is truly a family friendly museum that visitors enjoy exploring again and again.

PEEL MANSION MUSEUM & HERITAGE GARDENS479.273.9664www.peelmansion.org

Built in 1875 by Colonel Samuel West Peel on the outskirts of Bentonville, Peel Mansion is a marvelous example of Italianate structure surrounded by historic

roses, perennials and native fauna. Inside enjoy rare pine graining, elegant balustrades, Anglo-Japanese mantles, Greek Revival molded trim and more. Observe the authentic period details in the lighting devices ranging from kerosene lamps to chandeliers.

Take the road less traveled with day trips to these nearby attractions:

BOSTON MOUNTAINS SCENIC LOOPCompare and contrast these two very divergent roads that form this scenic route – US 71 and I-540. US 71 – the Arkansas Scenic Byway – forms half the route as it heads south out of Fayetteville. See and feel firsthand the rugged geography of the region as it twists, turns and dips through this part of the drive. Contrasting sharply with US 71, enjoy the smooth, modern composition of Scenic Highway 540 as you seemingly glide over all of nature’s offerings – with a single exception to the rule being a tunnel through a granite ridge near Winslow. If life truly is a “highway,” you won’t want to miss this one!

EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSASWhether you opt to have a soothing mineral bath that has been a part of the intrigue for those seeking restoration in Eureka Springs for centuries or if you simply choose to take advantage of a world class massage at one of the city’s day spas, you will enjoy your short visit to this destination. Located approximately 40 miles east of Bentonville, you can also experience the city’s Historic District or visit local shops and galleries for the day. You can also experience the city’s most haunted spots or visit one of our many art galleries. Find out more about this destination at www.eurekasprings.org.

BRANSON, MISSOURIConsider making the two-hour drive over to Branson, MO and visit what is heralded as the “live music show capital of the world.” It’s home to everything from Silver Dollar City to nearly fifty live performance theaters. Find out more about this destination at www.explorebranson.com.
