When most people think of lilacs, they think of the fragrant, old-fashioned common lilac which blooms for a few weeks each spring, but it’s quite diverse. By selecting carefully, it is possible to have two months of spring bloom, plus some repeat flowering in early fall. For the earliest blooms, choose common lilacs, which offer the longest blooming, largest flowers with the best fragrance.
Common lilacs are natives of chilly zones and require a cold period each winter for their flowers buds to mature and bloom the following spring. Lilacs need a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil and a spot that is large enough to accommodate the mature size of the plant. Early spring and fall are the best times to plant. Many growers prefer to plant lilacs in fall, especially in milder climates. Once established, lilacs need infrequent watering, except during droughts.
Lilacs are relatively low maintenance. Mature lilacs won't bloom if they do not receive enough sun or if they have not been pruned correctly. Young lilacs can take up to 3 years to reach maturity and bear flowers, but once established, they need pruning only to promote flowering, to reshape, and to remove unwanted suckers. Unless they have been long neglected, lilacs rarely need more than regular reshaping in early summer after they bloom. Long-neglected lilacs can easily become gangly monstrosities that flower little and overshadow their environments.
Lilacs bloom in seven colors: white, violet, blue, lavender, pink, magenta, and purple, with many shades of each, and in many sizes, ranging from 4-foot-tall dwarf bushy types to 20-foot-tall common lilacs to 30-foot trees. Florets, the tiny flowers that make up the larger flower heads, may be single (with one row of petals) or double, and vary widely in size and shape as do the clusters.

Springtime in Tokyo Japan may be famous for its cherry blossoms, but springtime in Tokyo brings
an abundance of other flowers and flower festivals. By the end of April, many of Japan’s cherry blossoms have already flowered, but Tokyo’s city dwellers still have plenty of blooming flowers to look forward to. The Nezu Shrine is a quiet place for 11 months out of the year, but by the first week in May, its 3,000 azalea plants burst into a palette of bright colors. The Bunkyo Azalea Festival, or Tsutsuji Matsuri, attracts thousands of visitors during Golden Week, its busiest viewing week. The 300-year-old azalea garden is home to rare varieties, such as the black karafune flower, and is complete with a Shinto shrine, bridges running over streams, traditional Toriii gates, and women dressed in their best traditional kimonos.
Across town is another spot draped in wondrous springtime color: the Kameido Tenjin Shrine. This shrine is home to its famous trellises boasting a sea of cascading purple wisteria vines. The wisteria was planted 300 years ago with the original temple. Visitors can stroll over the shrine’s beautiful red bridge, spying darting koi and lounging turtles in the pond. The wisteria are so alluring that old Japanese shoguns made pilgrimages to visit the garden. Many of Japan’s most celebrated artists have captured the garden’s scenic serenity in color prints.
Garden Club Honoree Congratulations to our resident Juanita Fryer who
was honored by the Bentonville Garden Club on
March 28th
at Peel Mansion. Arbor Day 2017 was
announced by Mayor Bob McCaslin at this event.
A commemorative tree, a Southern Magnolia was
dedicated and planted on the Peel Mansion grounds
in honor of Juanita. She has given countless hours
of work with the Garden Club and to Bentonville,
including the Arbor Day Committee. Juanita had
served as the past president of the Garden Club in
1989 and was 1st Lady of Bentonville in 1992 when
her late husband John was appointed Mayor.

May’s Emerald May birthdays fall right in the heart of spring, and the
emerald is the perfect gem to symbolize and
celebrate this month of rebirth. Prized for its brilliant
and beautiful green color, the emerald is often
favored by the rich and famous to wear as statement
pieces for big events. But this beautiful gem is just at
home in an unassuming pendant as it is in a tiara.
