From Father Jordan

My Brothers and Sisters,

May the Grace of Our Lord remain always with

us!

Looking West leads to the East

Last Sunday a good number of parishioners and

guests were lucky enough to hear our parishioner,

Al Badre explain his book, Looking West. In this

well written book Al explains the journey of

immigration from Lebanon to Albany, NY and to

many places beyond Albany. Al’s explanation of

his book, its development, and how it came to be

published, are fascinating in every sense of the

word. However, there is something much deeper

that is coupled with the narrative of Al’s

immigration.

In a way that can only be the plan of Divine

Providence, Al and his family “Looked to the

West” in order that they may be led to, and that

they may find and acknowledge, the Morning Star,

Christ Jesus and His Holy Catholic Church, that

rises in the East. In a compelling an unabashed

way, Al tells the story of his conversion from

Protestantism to Roman Catholicism. Al lives the

fulfillment of the words of Saint Anselm, Fides

quarens intellectum, Faith seeking understanding.

Intellectually gifted, Dr. Badre was perplexed by

the eternal questions: who is God; why do we

worship Him; what does believing in God mean

and what does it look like? To each and all of

these questions Al found the answers in Plato,

Aristotle and the great philosophers. However, it

was in the study of the great philosopher and

theologian, Saint Thomas Aquinas (just happens to

be a Dominican! ☺ that Al began a journey from

the intellect to the heart. Faith and the practice of

religion is only partially successful unless it moves

from the head to the heart: the longest journey in

the world!

That is the message I wish every person in our

Parish, in fact every person I know, could have

heard last Sunday: intellectual understanding is an

important part of our life of Faith, but it is the

abiding acknowledgment, welcome and presence

of God in our hearts that turns Faith into a lived

reality and not a check the box activity. Faith lived

in our hearts; Faith that acknowledges that Faith

and Good Works lead to salvation; Faith that sees

the fullness of revelation in the Church; Faith that

loves and longs for the presence of Christ in the

Sacraments; in our personal lives and throughout

society, THIS is the Faith that lives in the heart. I

was both moved and humbled to hear Al’s

witness! I am blessed to know him.

First Holy Communion

This weekend fifteen of our young parishioners

will receive their First Holy Communion: this is

the largest class we have had in many years.

The children are precious beyond words. I visited

their class this week to review the First

Communion Song we learned during the Family

Sacramental Retreat: I could have cried as I played

the piano and they sang: angelic is the

only word that describes their voices! May their

hearts be as joyful and pure years from now as

they are on this great day!

Mothers’ Day

Happy Mothers’ Day to all our moms, grandmas,

aunts, godmothers, and spiritual mothers! We

would be lost without you, and we love you! And

today we also honor Mary, the Mother of God and

our mother: may she always intercede for us!

Until we meet at the altar…. O Mary, conceived

without sin, pray for us who have recourse to

The next meeting of the Parish Book Club sill be held on May 29th at 7:00 pm at Denny Roberts house to discuss To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. All are welcome!

Catholic Charity Appeal

Thank you to all who have made gifts to the Annual Catholic Charity Appeal. We still have a way to go to make our goal, but with everyone’s participation, we will not only make our goal, but exceed the goal! Equal sacrifice, not equal gift. Thank you for your great generosity.

Increasing the Opportunities

for Eucharistic Adoration

The gifts and graces of Adoration of the Blessed

Sacrament are without equal. Drawing from the

Spiritual Life Survey taken up during the fall,

there are two opportunities for Eucharistic

Adoration. These times are: Monday – Thursday

mornings from 6:30–6:55; and on Sunday

morning between the end of 9:00 am Mass and the

beginning of the 11:00 am Mass.

BAPTISM Congratulations of the birth of your child!

We require all parents and godparents to attend Sacramental Preparation Classes. Once you have called the rectory to plan for the baptism of your child, we will have someone contact you to set up a special appointment for Preparation Classes. These classes are usually done one on one with each family and are conducted by a couple who are well prepared to teach and assist in Baptismal Preparation.

MARRIAGE Congratulations on your engagement and decision to enter into a Catholic marriage! St. Sebastian Parish will help you in your preparation to ensure that you make this serious and sacred step in your life a holy and happy one.

The day and time of your wedding must be arranged in person by the prospective bride and groom themselves as soon as they feel called to marry. No arrangement can be made by phone or parents. All arrangements should be made nine months prior to the wedding date and done prior to scheduling the reception.

The first meeting with the Pastor may be scheduled by calling the Parish Office at (401) 751-0196.

Spiritual preparation is a key part of this special time. Frequent participation in the sacraments during this time is important, particularly weekly Mass attendance. It is also strongly recommended that you bring yourselves to the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this time of preparation.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION By their word and their example, parents are the first and principal teachers of their children concerning our Catholic Faith. The Religious Education of Saint Sebastian’s stands ready to assist parents in their sacred and most important responsibility.

Should you have any questions about the program please contact Ms. Kristen Gold at [email protected] or Mr. Bob Short at [email protected]

CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD Saint Sebastian’s also offers Level One, ages 3 - 6, of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, commonly referred to as CGS. CGS is a Montessori-based program of faith formation. Please contact Mr. Bob Short, Catechist, at [email protected]
