1333 Friday 7 August Dear Members of the Loyola College Community We have experienced a very busy fortnight with many events and visitors to the College. I am delighted to share with you in this edition of the Ignatian the wonderful fortnight that we have all experienced. Grandparents Mass The annual Grandparents’ Mass was celebrated last week on the occasion of the feast of St Anne and St Joachim who tradition tells us were the grandparent of Jesus. Over 200 students and grandparents attended the Mass held in the St Ignatius Chapel. Monsignor Greg Bennet celebrated the Mass which was followed by a morning tea held in the Function Room. I thank Mr Lynch, Sr Nelia, Mrs Lonsdale, Mr Chirico, Mrs Pritchard and the Canteen team, Ms Chapman and the Year 11 VET Hospitality students for their combined efforts in making the day so successful. St Ignatius Feast Day We were again truly blessed with beautiful weather for this year’s College Feast Day which commenced with a wonderful celebration of the Eucharist. I wish to thank Fr Brian McCoy SJ, the new Jesuit Provincial for being our Principal Celebrant and Fr Terry Keane for concelebrating. The liturgy focused on our theme this year Magis… Many Gifts, One Spirit. I commend the students on their reverence and participation during the Mass and I thank Mr Lynch for overseeing the organisation of the Mass as well as Mr Brown, Mrs Hedger and Mrs Treglia for the beautiful music and choir. The walkathon was very successful and enthusiastically embraced by the students with many students finding sponsors for their House Charities. We hope to announce the final amount raised once all money has been collected. The lunch sponsored by the LPFA and afternoon activities and rides including the traditional talent quest were appreciated by students and staff. Again this year the VCAL class was instrumental in organising the student Talent Quest and I thank them and the staff who worked with them, in particular Mrs Keating. I take this opportunity of also thanking Mr Chirico who chaired the St Ignatius Day Organisation Committee, the Committee members for their contribution, and all who contributed to the success of this wonderful day of celebration.

1333 Friday 7 August Dear Members of the Loyola College Community

LEXSA Reunion Sunday Last Sunday the College hosted our annual combined ex~student reunion to celebrate the classes of the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th 20th 25th and 30th years of graduating from Loyola. It was wonderful to see so many former students in attendance filling the Functions Room to capacity. I thank our LEXSA Secretary Mrs D’Angelis, our College Archivist Mrs Baron and the LEXSA Committee for organising the day.

Transition Information Evening The annual transition evening was very well attended this week and was of great benefit to our students in assisting them to make informed decisions about subject choices for 2016. I thank Ms Donnelly, Deputy Principal ~ Teaching and Learning for organising the evening and all who contributed to its success. I remind all families that the transition packages for the various year levels are due in the coming week. I ask all families to adhere to the timelines set to enable us to make offers to other students wanting to enrol at the College in 2016. Condolences We express our deepest sympathy to Mrs Pola on the recent passing of her father and pray for her family at this time of loss. This week on Saturday 8 August we celebrate the feast of Australia’s first saint St Mary of the Cross Mackillop who was canonised in 2010. There was a special celebration for Mackillop House on Thursday to honour their patron. Like our College patron Ignatius, Mary too understood the need for the provision of Catholic education to form young people in a Christian environment. Both Ignatius and Mary sought to create environments for young people where they could come to know of the love of God and of the need to serve others. They were not afraid to challenge the thinking of their times and were prepared to suffer for what they believed they needed to do in carrying out God’s will. May we be inspired by their courage and example to discover God’s will for each one of us and to live this out in our lives. In the spirit of our recent St Ignatius Feast Day celebrations, let us continue to live out this year’s theme with enthusiasm and a commitment so that we may reach the Magis using our many individual gifts inspired by the one Spirit. FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (IGNATIAN MISSION & IDENTITY)

Grandparents’ Mass On the morning of Friday 24 July Monsignor Greg Bennet celebrated Mass marking the feast of St Joachim and St Anne which tradition holds are Mary’s parents and hence, the grandparents of Jesus.

This event, now in its fifth year, was booked out. Over 200 grandparents and grandchildren prayed together and then shared a morning tea served by the hospitality students. Monsignor Bennet spoke about the importance of grandparents and older people in children’s lives with the wonderful support they offer families, the wisdom they impart, the example they give of living faith~filled lives and the genuine love and interest they show younger people.

St Ignatius’ Day Mass This year’s St Ignatius Day continued the 36 year tradition of a Jesuit celebrating Mass for the Loyola Community. We were honoured by the support of Fr Brian McCoy SJ (L:65~69), the Principal Celebrant and Jesuit Provincial, and Fr Terry Kean, Parish Priest of St Francis Xavier, Montmorency, representing the Diamond Valley Deanery.

Fr. Brian McCoy grew up in Melbourne but has spent most of his Jesuit and priestly life in northern Australia and in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Western Australia, the Northern Territory and North Queensland. He entered the Society of Jesus from Xavier College in 1966, studying at

Loyola, Watsonia until 1969. He was ordained a priest in 1977 and took final vows in 1986. In 2004 Fr McCoy received a Doctorate from the University of Melbourne that focused on the health of Aboriginal men. He holds Honorary Senior Researcher positions at the University of Melbourne, La Trobe University, James Cook University, Townsville and the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, Perth. From 2013, he was Director of the Tertianship Program for the Australian Jesuit Province while remaining the Assistant

to the Jesuit Provincial for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ministries. He assumed the role of Provincial Superior for the Australian Province in August 2015.

Fr McCoy told the students and staff that it was his first visit to Loyola since his student days in the sixties, talked then a little about his work amongst indigenous communities and his recent visit to Cambodia where Jesuit Missions is very active. He then explained that their efforts in raising money for the six House Charities was a real way of bring Christ to and making a difference in the lives of the people each of the House charities assists.

Chisholm House ~ The Caroline Chisholm Society provides free and confidential help to expectant mothers and families.

Xavier House ~ Jesuit Missions support communities in their struggle for opportunity through a just share of the world’s resources.

McAuley House ~ Tikaperu, a Mercy charity that provides training and a means of making an income for people in a very poor area in Lima Peru.

Mannix House ~ The Brosnan Centre (Jesuit Social Services) help young people who are transitioning from a correctional facility as they resume life within the community.

Flynn House ~ St Vincent De Paul Society cares for people from all walks of life in our community who need financial and emotional support.

MacKillop House ~ MacKillop Family Services help families stay together and ensuring children have the security of a warm bed and enough to eat.

The St Ignatius Day Mass was a joyful Eucharistic celebration that reminded us of our call to be companions in Christ and men and women for others. Upcoming Events Class Masses, St Ignatius’ Chapel

FROM JESUIT SOCIAL SERVICES

The following articles have been supplied by Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ known to many Ignatian readers as a contributor to the Australian Catholics magazine. Pope Francis’ Encyclical on the Environment Pope Francis’ Encyclical on the environment ~ Landato Si ~ has won many hearts, not least because it combines concern for the environment and social justice. The Pope writes with authority because of his experience with the poor in large Argentinian cities. There the poor, caught in a society marked by great extremes of wealth and poverty are forced to live in polluted and unhealthy conditions. He has also visited poor villages whose people are vulnerable to the extreme weather events resulting from global warming.

In the Encyclical Pope Francis argues that social injustice and the trashing of the environment have the same cause. This is an attitude that looks to short term gain at whatever cost. It ignores both the bonds that connect us to the most vulnerable people in our society and our relationships to the world around us. It trusts that unregulated markets, always driven in part by greed, will benefit the poor as well as the wealthy. It is also confident we can make use of technology as we wish both to exploit the world and to mend any harmful consequences. The Pope claims that this attitude has a bad track record.

The Pope offers another vision of a world in which all beings are interdependent, so that when we pursue our personal and our national interests we must take into account the impact on other people and on the world of which we are

part. The test of our faithfulness in doing this is to the extent to which we attend to the flourishing of poor and to the flourishing of our environment.

For Pope Francis this is not simply a matter of making vision statements, establishing processes and adopting practices. It involves something more difficult: the changing of hearts and minds so that we see our world and other people as a gift and live with gratitude and respect.

For us at Jesuit Social Services the Encyclical reminds us that the vulnerable people whom we serve are not our clients but our brothers and sisters. It also reminds us that

our own growth and that of the vulnerable young people who we accompany comes through using the good things of our world attentively, whether they be food, drink, technology, exercise and the beauty of nature. We do not have an environment, we are the environment.

Pope Francis reminds us of the constant danger of looking at our lives from the inside without relating them to the world outside us. When we look out we are naturally drawn in compassion to the people who are vulnerable to exploitation by other human beings, and to our natural environment, frail and vulnerable to exploitation.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (ADMINISTRATION AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT)

2015 St Ignatius Day a Wonderful Day of Celebration at Loyola College Founder’s Term is the name given to Term 3 at Loyola College as it is the term in which we celebrate our Ignatian identity and Charism through the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola ~ 31 July ~ the founder of the Jesuits after which the College is named. On Friday 31 July our celebrations again provided the College community with the opportunity to proclaim its core values ~ faith in a loving and compassionate God through the celebration of the Eucharist, a call to express our understanding of the Magis… Many Gifts, One Spirit through our fundraising efforts in our College Walkathon and finding God in all things with an afternoon of fun and celebration.

As with the past 35 years of celebrating St Ignatius Day, our day began with a Eucharistic celebration giving thanks for the life and example of St Ignatius and thanking God for the blessings our College Community enjoys. In accordance with our

tradition, a Jesuit priest was invited to be the Principal Celebrant amongst the Deanery priests to celebrate the

Eucharist and this year the invitation was extended to Fr Brian McCoy SJ, Provincial of the Jesuits in Australia. Fr Terry Kean, Parish Priest of St Francis Xavier Montmorency and school friend of Fr Brian was the concelebrant in our Eucharistic celebration. A clear theme of the Mass and Fr Brian’s homily was Loyola College’s emphasis on service as evident through our focus on the six House Charities.

After a short recess, the students and staff members assembled in House groups in preparation for the 8 kilometre walkathon around the Watsonia surrounds. This year the privilege of leading out the students along the walkathon route was given to the members of the ACS Cross Country squad. In what we have come to call the St Ignatius Gift the first three male student to return were Matthew Carty (12 KSSD) who won from Mark Thompson

(12 XLMC) with Kyle Steindl (11 ASJM) third, whilst the first three girls to finish the course were Shania Murray (11 AJFT), Rhiannon Garraway (10 CPFH) and Erin Fischmann (12

ALEH). This year we have set the target of beating our 2014 total of $34,422.87 in support of the charitable works of the Caroline Chisholm Society (Chisholm House), St. Vincent de Paul Society ~ Diamond Creek Conference (Flynn House), Jesuit Social Services Brosnan Centre (Mannix House), MacKillop Family Services (MacKillop House), Tikaperu (McAuley House) and Jesuit Mission (Xavier House). In recognition of their celebration of their final St. Ignatius Day, Year 12 students were given the privilege of dressing in colourful costumes after the Mass.

The wonderful tradition of the Loyola Parents and Friends Association (LPFA) sponsoring a free lunch for all students and staff members was continued this year. Students returned from the Walkathon hungry and thirsty keen to partake in all that the Canteen staff and parent volunteers had prepared. The lunch offerings were a wonderful smorgasbord which included pizza, pies, pasties, sausage rolls, hot dogs, burgers, souvlaki as well as a number of delicious vegetarian offerings, a variety of drinks and a selection of chocolates.

The College grounds had been transformed overnight into a fun park with students having full access to a number of great rides including Dodgem Cars, the Sizzler, the Cyclone, Riptide, the Cliff Hanger, the UFO and the Wrecking Ball. The two photo booths and the fairy floss stalls also proved very popular.

A highlight again this year was the talent and great sense of fun on show at the Loyola Talent Quest. The judges ~ the Principal, Mr Joseph Favrin and members of the Performing Arts Faculty, Ms Vanda Tolli and Mr Leo Hong ~ were hard at work in ranking the 12 quality acts. Prize winners in the Years 7~9 category were 1st placing being awarded to Larisa Ambrose (7 CAJM) for her calisthenics performance with singing duo of Victoria Mertzanidis (8 KAMM) and Kianna Bartolo (8 KCMG) being awarded 2nd placing. In the Years 10~12 category 1st placing was awarded to singing duo Micaela Wearne (11 ALEH) & Tanya Setiwan (11 MMCB) with 2nd placing was awarded to Laura Cowan (12 CJWP). The Encouragement Awards were presented to drummer Blake Drapper (7 ANJV) in the Junior Division and soloist Milad Pinnone (10 FPTC) in the Senior Divison. This very entertaining event was again co~ordinated by the Senior VCAL students under the leadership of Mrs Elly Keating.

Throughout August the support of all Loyola families is sought in finalising the Walkathon sponsorship money so that students can collect it, bring it to their Mentor Teachers and have it tallied in preparation for presentations to be made to representatives from the six House Charities at our end of Term 3 College Assembly scheduled for Tuesday 15 September ~ Periods 3 and 4. Once all walkathon money is collected planning and preparation will begin in earnest for our 2016 St. Ignatius Day celebrations.

Celebrating our Families in the Life of our Students with our Grandparents Mass

On Friday 24 July Loyola College celebrated the feast day of Jesus’ grandparents Saints Anne and Joachim and the role of grandparents in the life of our students with our seventh annual Grandparents’ Mass and Morning Tea. Two hundred grandmothers, grandfathers and grandchildren gathered in the St. Ignatius’ Chapel to give thanks to God. The Eucharist was again celebrated by Monsignor Greg Bennet, Vicar General in the Archdiocese of Melbourne who reflected how grandparents and grandchildren provide

meaning to our lives and help us gain our bearings as we embark on our life’s journey. The liturgy was beautifully enhanced by musical and vocal accompaniment from our musicians and the Loyola Voices Choir under the direction of Ms Gemma Hedger. At the conclusion of Mass, grandparents and grandchildren gathered in the Functions Room to enjoy refreshments and to share stories. The clear memory of the morning was the wonderful sense of pride and happy faces of all participants. Each year we look forward to this event as an annual celebration of family which is integral to who we are and what we become. A full picture spread of this event will appear in the next edition of the Ignatian.

Loyola College Prepares to Host Father and Daughter Breakfast ~ Thursday 3 September On Saturday 8 August bookings open for the annual Father’s Day Breakfast which this year will take place on Thursday 3 September where our female students are encouraged to accompany their fathers or significant male adults. Our morning will commence at 7.45am with a cooked breakfast prepared by our Hospitality and Canteen staff and served by our VET Hospitality students. At the conclusion of the breakfast we will gather in the St Ignatius’ Chapel for a prayer service to praise God for the blessings that fathers and daughters provide for each other and their families. We anticipate that the prayer service will conclude at 9.00am.

Each year families are disappointed because they miss out on booking their place at this wonderful event even though the date is highlighted in the College Calendar distributed at the commencement of the 2015 academic year. These events are often booked out within the first fortnight of being promoted in the Ignatian. Parents and guardians should note that as with the Mother’s Day Breakfast and the Grandparents” Mass and Morning Tea, numbers will be caped to accommodate guests in the Functions Room and St Ignatius Chapel. As this is a formal event all students will be required to wear winter uniform with blazer.

We look forward to this celebration of family and fatherhood and all fathers and guardians are strongly encouraged to book their places to attend with their daughters as soon as possible. FROM COLLEGE ARCHIVIST

being abandoned in 1986 and was formally donated to Loyola College by the Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Diamond Creek, Fr Bernard Mackin in November 1989.

During the late 1980s the Loyola College Board had considered building a new chapel however it was decided that such a project would be unaffordable. A suggestion was then made by one of the College Chaplain, to relocate the neglected building to Loyola College. So in the early hours of a Sunday morning in August 1990 a police car escorted the old church, loaded on the back of a semi-trailer to the grounds of Loyola College. The abandoned sixty year old church was a wonderful gift as it facilitated the development of the prayer and liturgical life of Loyola College.

Contractors were engaged for the carpentry, electrical, plumbing and plastering works in late October 1990. This work commenced immediately with a vision of painting and landscaping works to take place by the beginning of December of that year. The original altar stone was also incorporated into the new altar. The complete restoration of the chapel was made possible with the support of the College community as well as the donation of furniture by the Loyola Parents and Friends’ Association (LPFA).

FROM ICT MANAGER

A New Act and a New Office to tackle Cyberbullying Under the new Enhancing Online Safety for Children Act 2015, the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner (www.esafety.gov.au) has been formed. The Act empowers the Commissioner to have offensive content removed if social media companies do not remove the content after it has been reported to them. The new Office has also absorbed the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Cybersmart program.

Cybersecurity ~ How does one protect oneself from online scammers? When one engages in online social networking, one may post pictures of oneself, make catch~up plans with friends, and generally chat about what one has been up to and where one has been. But, sadly, it also offers a plethora of unscrupulous individuals and organised cyber crime syndicates an irresistible opportunity to gain access to people (e.g. via Facebook, Twitter, online gaming or via

email) in an attempt to exploit and defraud them of their money.

Scamming is where one person, a cyber thief, pretends to have a legitimate financial need and exploits the generosity and naivety of another in order to obtain that person’s bank account or credit card details, with the ultimate aim of ripping money off that person.

How effective is a home antivirus at stopping electronic scum and villainy such as viruses, worms and trojans from infecting and spying on the home computer and passing personal information back to cyber criminals? The truth is that there is no antivirus software or firewall in the world that is capable of securing personal bank account details on a computer if these details are unknowingly and freely offered to phishing scammers! How? Read on…

Ever gone fishing? One casts out a line and waits for a bite. Hopefully the hook does its job and, hey presto, one gets a catch. On the Internet this is called ‘phishing’ ! same sound, different spelling; one is legal and the other is not, at least in most developed nations. It is what cyber criminals do ~ they try to trick individuals into freely handing over credit card details. No firewall needed here.

What is interesting about this type of scam is that it is not asking for money; actually, it is asking to put money into one’s bank account, to then withdraw it at a later date and possibly leave some money in one’s account as a thank you for being so helpful. But don’t be fooled! If the person is a stranger, then the person is most likely not a friend, but a fiend, intent on convincing one to allow them to basically give away money for nothing, when in reality what they really intend to do is steal money out of one’s bank account. These scams usually originate from organised crime syndicates operating in countries such as Nigeria and Russia, where there are no laws forbidding such practices, meaning there is no way for a person to get their money back!

What should one do if one receives such emails? Add the sender to the email blocked senders list, then delete the email.

There is no substitute for parental involvement in a child’s online activities. Parents and guardians should establish an ongoing conversation with their children about his or her various experiences, providing guidance whenever necessary. Importantly, parents and guardians might consider going online themselves and joining a social networking site or getting involved with friends in a chat room. Parents and guardians should be familiar with the space their children are playing in.

FROM LEARNING RESOURCES

Library resources on the LMS The College’s new Learning Management System (LMS) has now been opened up to parents and guardians. This is terrific news as it will no doubt build on the relationship between parent and guardians, their students and College staff. To this end, parents and guardians can also access the Library’s LMS page.

The resources found within this space are broad, but all target the information needs of our students – be that for their studies or their reading leisure pursuits. After logging in, follow the path outlined in the image below to get to the Library’s homepage: Parental Links > iCentre > Library Resources.

This will lead to the Library LMS landing page. A scrolling banner of upcoming events and promotion is first thing visible. Below this is a list of ‘colored headings’ across the page that can be selected, as per the image below.

These headings lead to the variety of resources that Library staff have collated for students’ use. Some highlights are: the library catalogue (which includes e-books); research databases such as the World Book and EbscoHost; links to subject pathfinders that have been created by library staff to assist students and classroom teachers across a number of subjects and assessment tasks. There are also online newspapers and magazines.

Read takes users to our Book Club and what to read pages, including book reviews and vlogs (video blogs); and Learn provides opportunities for students to learn new information literacy skills. It is here that parents and guardians can see examples of the bibliography tasks and quizzes that Year 7 and 8 Humanities students have been using this year. Learning activities that promote using the library in different, non-traditional ways, such as lunchtimes dedicated to our MakerSpace forums are also featured.

We encourage all parents and guardians to take a look through the Library’s LMS site. We are continuously adding to it – whether it be administrative based, such as a change if the Library’s opening/closing hours; assisting teachers by

adding relevant research resources for our students; or simply by encouraging students to the read tab and/or be using the Library space in some way.

We’re also keen to hear about the reading habits of parents/guardians ~ so be on the lookout for a promotion targeting you in the not too distant future.

And finally, on another important topic, the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s annual Book Week event is fast approaching on 22 ~28 August. The shortlist of potential winning titles can be found at: http://cbca.org.au/awards.htm

This year’s theme is Books Light Up Our World and the Library is organising activities and competitions for students and staff alike. Keep an eye on the Library LMS page for more details.

In the meantime, welcome to the LMS and enjoy exploring our site! FROM DIRECTOR OF SPORT

Next Tour of the College The 3rd last Monday College Tour for the year will be held on Monday 31 August from 9.15am until 11.00am. Bookings are essential on the above contact number or email. Families spreading the word to others about Loyola College are asked to please mention that our annual Open Day will be held on Sunday 13 September from 1.00pm ~ 4.00pm with no booking required. Tours are also provided on this day.

From the Banyule Council The residents of Castlereigh Estate which runs off Bungay Street have contacted Banyule Council regarding the congestion of traffic in their street as a result of our families using this area as a drop off and collect point. The Council have advised our neighbours that their officers will be taking photos of numberplates and issuing fines to the offending drivers.

From the Diamond Valley Deanery The Diamond Valley Deanery Art Sale which started here at Loyola College in May continues with the exhibition and sale of artworks donated by artist Judy Racz, at Bridges Restaurant, 1075 Heidelberg~Kinglake Rd, Hurstbridge. The official Opening will be held on Sunday 23 August from 2.00pm to 5.00pm – RSVP to Nick on 9718 0099. The

exhibition will be held from 18 August until 21 September. This is a further opportunity to own an original artwork and at the same time assist the needy within the local community. There is a wide variety of styles and prices to choose from.

Families of the Week The third Working Bee for the year was held on Saturday 25 July in ideal conditions given the weather earlier in the week. Work continued on the new indigenous garden at the Grimshaw Street entrance. We are very grateful that the following families did their best to finish the required amount of spreading, digging, clearing and levelling in order that the next stage of the garden can begin soon. We are grateful for their generous efforts.
