A photographer’s Fayyaz Ahmed

By Bushra Shehzad

With no f o r m a l training in photogra-phy and a degree in computer

engineering, Fayyaz Ahmed is the name of a burgeoning fashion photographer, rising with the likes of Rizwan Baig. Hailing from Karachi, Fayyaz gave his ca-reer a kick start in 2006 and profession-ally entered into the world of fashion

photography in 2007. Since then he has only gone up, up and up. He has been nominated for the Lux Style awards for best photographer thrice consecutively. His style is distinct, versatile, very dif-ferent from other photographers in the country. He believes in continuous growth and his work is manifest of this constant evolution.

Q- You’re a computer engineer, how did you stray into this field?

A- I got bored of what I was doing

and being a creative soul could not put my heart into a dull management job. There came a time when photography started occupying 90 percent of my head and I couldn’t focus on what I was employed to do. I had to pursue photog-raphy professionally.

Q- Does photography come natu-rally to you? Any specific inspiration that led you into the world of photog-raphy?

A- It does come naturally. I have

I had no idea or intention that I would get into fashion photography. It appeared that fashion photography was just something where you photograph pretty girls and brag about being a fashion photographer. However, I eventually realised that fashion is probably the most creative genre of photography

a good eye. I was always inspired by photos of fast cars but now I find it funny that I never used to think about all the hard work which goes into creating those amazing images and hence I never even thought about photography. It was only when I used to be on my way to my office that I would pass through old Karachi and would be inspired by its architecture and other sights around it. I would click with my eye and im-agine making a picture because I didn’t even have a camera back then. That was when I thought that I could take some good photos if I had a camera, so I got myself one.

Q- Why specifically fashion photography?A- When my love for photography started, I had no idea

or intention that I would get into fashion photography. It appeared that fashion photography was just something where you photograph pretty girls and brag about being a fashion photographer. However, I eventually realised that fashion is probably the most creative genre of photography. Since I am al-

ways interested in making a picture rather than just tak-ing it, fashion photography is the ideal genre for that as I am always creating a fantasy through my photos.

Q- How does it feel to represent Pakistan?A- Feels good to be able to change people’s perspectives

about Pakistan. Mostly, pictures of Pakistan comprise of beg-gars and landscapes and I show a more developed side of Paki-stan and not just in terms of models wearing modern clothing but also in terms of the urban environments where I choose to photograph them. Many foreigners still think we travel on camels carrying klashinkovs. It feels good when they say, “Oh, wow! Is this location actually in Pakistan?!”. And I reply, “Pa-kistan has everything.”

Q- Your favourite photo shoot so far? The most challeng-ing and interesting photo shoot yet?

A- I haven’t shot my favourite shoot yet. My latest shoot is usually my favourite and then I get over it in a few days. The most challenging shoot was when I did a night fashion shoot, which was the first time a proper night shoot was done in Pakistan and the editor was worried if the lights would be ok and if it would be printable at all! I had to do a lot of tests before the actual shoot and all the hard work paid off, as peo-ple still talk about that shoot even though it’s quite old now.

Q- How do you dif-ferentiate yourself from other fashion photogra-phers in Pakistan? Do you think you can learn from others in the field?

A- Even though I have a certain signature, I con-stantly keep doing some-thing fresh. I think that’s what sets me apart. While I never had a photogra-phy teacher, I keep learn-ing every day and from every source.

Q- Which fashion photographer do you admire the most, both nationally and interna-tionally?

A- Internationally, there are so many... But top favourites would be classics like Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon and modern ones such as Jean Francois Campos, Stefano Gulazzi, Camilla Akrans, Mathias Vreins. It’s a never-ending list ac-tually.

Locally, while there are surely those who are doing good work, I have never looked at them for inspiration. Which is why my work is distinct. The good fashion photog-raphers in Pakistan can be counted on finger tips and if they start looking at each other for inspiration, it would result in recycling of the same stuff, not that it doesn’t happen.

Q- What is it that you think is unique in them and there-fore sets them apart?

A- I think visual arts are best left to individual interpreta-

26 I January 16 - 22, 2011

Page 27: 16th January 2010 - Lounge Weekly - Pakistan Today

tions, rather than restricted to a descrip-tion consisting of some words.

Q- When shooting a certain person or an image, how do you make sure that the result of your shoot synchro-nises with the image in your mind? Do you think it is a challenge to achieve this harmony?

A- Creating the image in your mind is the challenge, putting it on camera is easy.

Q- What has been your greatest achievement in the world of photogra-phy so far?

A- I haven’t had my greatest achieve-ment yet, which means I continue to grow, thankfully.

I have worked for big labels like Gul Ahmed, international organisations like the British Council and Cambridge

University and exhibited in places like Redbridge Museum in London. Some of my photographs were published in a German University book as well. And I have been nominated thrice in a row for the Lux Style Awards. Coming to the motion side of photography i.e my new passion of video direction, my first music video (of song “Bachana”) has been reaching number one position on all television charts.

Q- What sort of equipment and software do you use for your pictures?

A- I’m not really a gear head. My favourite software would be Photo Me-chanic, which is just a super-fast brows-er for big files. As far as equipment is concerned, I just use what gets the job done. It used to be different Nikon cam-eras for last 4 years, but I gladly picked up a Canon 7D when I needed to make

a music video as it was a much better option for that.

Q- Do you think fashion photogra-phy has a scope in Pakistan, and some-body merely looking to channel their inner creativity should go for it as you have done?

A- Scope is there, but has been harmed to an extent by hobbyists and bridal photographers who either charge peanuts, or do it for free altogether. While they can’t provide quality they do become the bargaining chip. So to survive in this market, you really have to be on top of your game.

Q- What would be your advice to upcoming photographers?

A- Only do it if you are good at it. And if you are good at it, don’t do it for free.

Only do it if you are good at it. And if you are good at it, don’t do it for free

Na v e e d w o u l d not be a happy man if he only c o n t i n -

ued to joke around about life about his surroundings and about the black situation of the country. His constant black humour, and sarcastic quips especially in reply to his co-actor Mansoor’s patri-otic statements are amusing and laughable, but between the lines, dead serious, paint-ing the darkest picture of a chaotic state of affairs, gone completely out of hand.

The two lead characters hit it off excellently with the audience in January’s first theatre play, called ‘Sabz’. A breakthrough for writer and director Abdullah Farhatul-lah, who has had prior expe-rience in theatre, Sabz was

Drama

a play that swung the social realities of Pa-kistan right in the face, while making it all so funny and entertaining at the same time. In fact Farhatullah says he has attempted to ‘shughal-coat’ the play rather than ‘sugar coat’ it.

Farhat who has been associated with theatre primarily in Islamabad since the last five years, has done many large hits. He was involved in the theatre company called Copy Cats, and while doing his Masters in Philoso-phy from Punjab University, also launched his own company called Hazaar Daastan.

“I have worked with well known direc-tor Sharabeel, in his play ‘Bombay Dreams’ where I was a co-writer, an Assistant Director and I also played a character,” he says. “This play was meant to be for a festival, but it was later changed around and I fit in some music and humour so that the thoughts I am trying to give out were easily digestible.”

Written a year ago, with some help from his friend and the producer of the play Umar Hameed, ‘Sabz’ shows a story of two young men, opposite in temperament and thinking, who are aspiring to work together in the play. The play is about the Pakistani society, but the audience is only given a rough outline of the play within a play. Instead, the subtexts and ‘footnotes’ along with ‘silly’ questions asked by Naveed, a laid back young man, whose

life is seemingly centered around women, send the audience into fits of laughter, while also revealing the theme of the play. Their director is played by Farhat himself, a man haunted by the threat that his play won’t be allowed to run in Rana Sahab’s theatre hall because it doesn’t contain any of the cheap dances which the public loves. To Naveed he is like a teacher impatiently answering the questions of a child in kindergarten, while trying to motivate both of his cast members to ‘feel’ the condition of the society.

Dance numbers on songs by AR Reh-man and Shankar-Ehsan-Loy make the play even better because the music is wonderful, while the choreography by Wahab Shah is absolutely groundbreaking. Shah, who lives in Australia, leapt over several obstacles and then finally came to Pakistan only to have this play done.

“The man is so passionate that he would give anything to take part in and finish a play he is working in, and nationally he is prob-ably the only really good choreographer,” says Farhat.

Meanwhile the actors, who play Naveed (Yasir Hussain) and Mansoor (Muaz Raja), have done remarkable acts. They are estab-lished as characters in the very beginning with Naveed being laid back, cool and calm, questioning and arguing over everything,

40 I January 16 - 22, 2011

Page 41: 16th January 2010 - Lounge Weekly - Pakistan Today

I 41January 16 - 22, 2011

scornful over the Pakistani dilemma of progression, and mad about wom-en. Mansoor meanwhile is scornful at Naveed himself, superior about his love for Pakistan, and contemptuous about Naveed’s constant flirtatious en-deavours with women. While he is the typically patriotic Pakistani, he is how-ever also blind with regard to himself. Naveed on the other hand warily shows his ‘affection’ for his country, but more or less has a habit of looking at himself as a change vector, rather than anyone else.

But later in the play, Farhat has cleverly directed them to change their characters with great subtlety, and this was only possible because both actors were very good. Slowly it was Naveed who began losing his temper when it was announced by a smug, swaggering Rana Sahab that the play would have to be cancelled because of its lack of ‘good’ dances, and a general black mood fell over everyone. At this point, Mansoor changes too, from being the ever lov-ing Pakistani to the cynical one, say-ing that this was how things were done and no one could do anything about it. But Naveed is admanat to make things

work. Rana Sahab, a character played by

Raza Shah, who has also been associ-ated with Ajoka, and is a professional dancer was an anchoring character in the play, denoting the symbol of the in-flexible passivity present in society, and traditional values that have seeped in and are too blind to throw off their skin and move on. His swagger and typically petty bourgeiose attitude almost remind one of the characters Mushtaq (Ali Safi-naz) in TV play ‘Dolly ki Ayegi Baraat’ – a very funny man indeed both in de-meanour and appearance.

It was ironic that this professional dancer who dances in all plays, was actu-ally restrained from dancing at the end of the play. No spoilers here, but the ac-tual theme of the play comes right at the end, when the word Sabz, from the Pa-kistani flag, is given its due importance, not in the religious sense, but as the country’s colour. “It is time, we let our colours show,” says Kamran (Farhat) the director of the play within a play.

Overall the play has done excellent-

ly. Punctuality, strict adherence to not letting in people after a certain time, and the vigilance to discourage the use of crackling chip packets was impres-sive. The fact that some dancers sud-denly started running out from the au-dience made it something very unique, instantly involving the audience and a hundred percent response of some kind or the other was elicited. Everyone was involved in some way or the other. This is not even the least that any other plays by other famous theatre groups are able to do in Pakistan. Audience involve-ment is integral during theatre and if this is not done, then the play could result in boredom, yawns, and even people walking out of the theatre in the middle half. But the more interaction there is, the more significant the com-munication of thoughts becomes, and this is what Farhat has achieved as a writer and director both.

Lounge wishes him good luck for other projects and it would certainly be a pleasure for Lahore to get more thea-tre activities.

“It is time, we let our colours show,” says Kamran, the director of the play

‘10 Things I Hate About You’Nowadays, a teen movie is being released

almost every week, but a quality teen roman-tic comedy is hard to come by. From mov-ies like ‘Clueless’, ‘Never Been Kissed’ and ‘Whatever it Takes’, one movie that stands out is ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ which is a film that elevates this genre. It takes the teen romantic comedy to a completely new level, what with the eccentricities of the char-acters, the mind boggling teenage experienc-es and the complete defying of stereotypes. It has been a decade since ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ was released and it still remains one of the most extraordinary romantic com-edies to date.

The story is based on William Shake-speare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’ and while remaining true to the original story line, renders inimitability to the story through its characters. The story is based on the lives of two sisters, Kat and Bianca where the former is a rebel without a cause and the latter is the social butterfly, who in order to keep up ap-pearances, must have a boyfriend. But their father has one rule only: Bianca cannot begin dating until her sister Kat does. This rule pos-es a problem for Bianca because Kat has no desire whatsoever to start dating whereas Bi-anca herself has been asked out by two boys for the prom already. In order to clear the coast for herself, Bianca pairs up with the shy Cameron and sets her sister up with the local bad boy Patrick. The story unfolds and once Patrick ascertains his own genuine liking for Kat, the taming of the shrew starts.

One remarkable thing about this movie is the inexplicable delivery of dialogues. It is filled with sexual innuendos and double meanings. Julia Stiles’ character Kat stands apart in her dialogue delivery. Heath Ledg-er as Patrick is truly mesmerising and both Stiles and Ledger share an awesome chemis-try on camera. Though the movie tries too hard to get good laughs out of the audience, some aspects such as the attitude of the Eng-lish teacher or the perverted principal are very funny.
