GOD’S GRACE IS ALL POWERFUL

This week we continue with a series of parables from Jesus. He continues to emphasize the dynamic qualities of faith. This is something that I believe most of us struggle to appreciate. Often times, people will say to me, I wish I had a stronger faith, or I wish I could have the faith of such and such a person.

Do we really believe that at the point we recognize faith in another person that we can conclude that they always possessed that level of faith? We do not believe that about a person’s athletic ability, or their artistic giftedness or any other human accomplishment. We may talk about “natural” and “God” given abilities, but we understand that this grace is further honed by years of practice, training and study. We cooperate with God’s blessings to become authentic disciples. Few amateurs would assume that they could compete successfully against professionals the first time they tried and yet we do this all the time with the spiritual life.

Jesus wants us to realize that growth is at the heart of spiritual journey. That which begins as a small seed, a gift from our parents, godparents and other significant people in our lives is capable of tremendous growth and achieve-ments. However, it will take time. Admittedly, we are not a patient people, and this leads to several problems.

First, we do not always recognize the difference between virtue and vice, or in the language of Jesus, wheat and weeds. In our haste to cast out the bad, we sometimes uproot what is good and foundational in our lives. We may be so ob-sessed with ridding our lives of sin that we begin to see sin everywhere. We are so obsessed that we do not want to take the chance that something questionable may become sin, so out it goes. Our concern for perfection adversely affects our progress.

Secondly, growth takes time. Babies need nine months to grow in the womb. A seed needs a predetermined number of days to germinate and bear fruit. If we start a tomato plant in June and expect ripe tomatoes the first week in July, we will be disappointed. If we rip up the tomato plant because the fruit is not ripe and begin with another plant, we may never have a delicious tomato. Likewise, when we keep trying a new spiritual path, a new way of praying, a new confes-sor, a new genre of sacred music to listen to, etc, we do not give any of these resources a time to mature. We are likely not even aware of why something is or is not working. All we realize that it is not meeting my timetable. Cycling through new options only increases our sense of loss and frustration.

Jesus assures us that God’s grace is all powerful. God wants us to love and be like him. He also promises to nourish and sustain us in our pursuit of holiness. Even the smallest expressions of faith hold great power and fruitfulness. Our cooperation will help to strengthen the roots of faith. Our patience will provide God with the window to allow his grace the time necessary for us to receive all that God knows that we need. St. Ignatius counseled that it was wise to not make changes in the spiritual life by ourselves or when we are in desolation. He defines desolation as a disturbance in the soul, moving to lack of confidence, feeling hopeless and separated from God. He teaches to wait to one is consoled in the presence of God to determine what needs to be adjusted. Seems like a wise path to follow. -- Father Phil

CAN YOU IDENTIFY THESE VERY HAPPY PEOPLE?

Our parish family offers sentiments of CONGRATULATIONS to six individuals in our parish whose preparations for full initiation as Catholics were completed this year and who received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at Mass at Holy Martyrs Church, on July 5, 2020!

Emily Morris, baptized in another Christian faith, was fully received as a Catho-lic after 2 years of preparation through a process first begun in Texas, and then completed through our parish RCIA program this past year, when Emily and her husband, Will, relocated to Maine. Emily professed her faith, was Confirmed, and received Holy Eucharist for the first time on July 5.

Katie Rizzo and four parish teens, Carmen & Fernando Gallinas (HM), Adam Tsounis (SG), and Sylvie Anna Zimba (SJ) were Confirmed at this Mass. In the case of our Catholic candidates, a bishop would be the traditional minister for the conferral of the Sacrament of Confirmation. This year, due to COVID-19, our pastor, Fr. Phil, was delegated by Bishop Deeley to confer the Sacraments.

We want to assure Emily, Katie, Carmen, Fernando, Adam and Sylvie Anna of our ongoing prayers and spiritual support as they each bring their own gifted light to our community and to the world at large, in every area of their lives. HOLY SPIRIT, COME!

OUR FAMILY PRAYS: “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Jesus, help us to come as close to you as possible, each day, through prayer, the Gospels and kind acts. Help us to build the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ on earth and work side by side with our neighbors as your laborers. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

GOSPEL BACKGROUND: Matthew 13:24-30 — In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues his farming theme with three parables that include similes. A simile is a figure of speech that compares two different things in an interesting way. For example, Jesus’ 3 similes begin with the kingdom of heaven is like...a man who sowed good seed in his field; like...a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field; like...yeast that a woman took and mixed…’. These statements all show how God offers the world his patient mercy before his just judgment. Through the Responsorial Psalm , we sing, ‘Lord, you are good and forgiving.’

SUMMER SERIES 2020—TRUE STORIES THAT HELP US GROW IN FAITH: Meet the Patron Saints of Farmers - Saint Isidore & Maria Torribia

Isidore and Maria grew up as rural peasants a little over 1,000 years ago, near Madrid, Spain. As a mar-ried couple, He and Maria were models of Christian charity and faith and they promised to serve God, throughout their lives. They shared what they had with the poor, even their meals. They often gave more than they had for themselves. The couple had only one

child who, sadly, died in infancy.

As an adult, Isidore worked as a day laborer on the farm of the wealthy land-owner. He prayed while at work. Because he took the time to go to Mass before work, Isidore often arrived later to work than the other laborers. But he always seemed to have plenty of time to finish his work. The other farmers could not understand this and they thought that other laborers were helping Isidore with his share of the work. They considered him lazy. After the landowner heard the other farmers’ complaints, he decided to see for himself what Isidore’s work habits were. To his surprise, as he watched Isidore work in the fields, he saw two angels guiding the plow, alongside Isidore. So, he did have help but not the kind the farmers had feared! Even when he was at Mass, a portion of his work was getting done! Juan, the landowner, believed the miracle he saw with his own eyes, and he would come to see more in his lifetime. He believed that Isidore saved his daughter’s life. He also believed that Isidore saved the life of a horse that was very important for the farming. Isidore was canonized a saint in the Catholic Church in 1622.

Maria always kept a pot of stew on the fireplace in their humble rural dwell-ing, in anticipation of the hungry persons that Isidore would often bring home. One day he brought home more hungry people than usual. After she served many of them, Maria told him that there simply was no more stew in the pot. He insisted that she check the pot again, and she was able to spoon out enough stew to feed them all. After Isidore’s death, Maria be-came a hermit and miracles from God were attributed to her prayers and in-tercessions. Maria is reported to have had many dream-visions of the Virgin Mary. She was beatified in 1697, the second step of three to official saint-hood!
