THE UNIVERSITY .....

Men's Tower No. 7

Since its founding in 1922 as a state-assisted institution, Morehead State University has developed through the years to stand today as a dynamic, multi· purpose university situated on a beautiful 500-acre campus where the Bluegrass meets Appalachia in the foothills of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Under the farsighted and energetic leadership of Dr. Adron Doran, the school's seventh chief executive, Morehead State University has grown from a tiny state college to an expanding university reaching out to serve Kentucky and the nation. From 698 students at the time of Dr. Doran's inauguration in 1954, the enrollment has increased almost 900 per cent to more than 6,000.

Physically, the university consists of more than 50 major structures on the campus proper with a total value of more than $60 million. Additionally, a 300-acre experimental farm is being developed six miles north of Morehead in rural Rowan County. Almost all of the major construction has occurred since Dr.

Page 5: 1970-71 Basketball Morehead State University

Doran became president. Recently occupied were a 19-story, 512-bed residence tower for men, a 10-story, 400-bed residence hall for women and a $2.8 million renovation and expansion of the Adron Doran Univer, sity Center. Nearing completion is a $1.8 million modernization of Rader Hall, home of the School of Social Sciences. The project, when completed early in 1971, will have transformed the oldest campus structure into an ultra-modern classroom and office building. Construction starts soon on a $3 million technical institute.

Academically, the university is composed of five schools-Social Sciences, Applied Sciences and Technology, Education, Humanities, and Sciences and Mathematics. Undergraduate, graduate and associate degrees are offered and additional credit may be earned beyond the master's degre.e. The faculty numbers more than 350 and about 11,300 persons are MSU alumni.

FIRST FAMILY OF FANS-MSU President Adron Doran and his gracious wife, Mignon, are regulars at all Morehead Stale University l10me basketball ga1~es. Mrs. Doran, an accomplished music ian, performs al courtside of all home games with delightful o rgan melodies. Dr. Doran, a former coach and player, frequently greets visitors like basketball star Leonard Coulter of Danville who came lo Lhe campus last winter. The youngster laler accepted an MSU scholarshi_p and is a member of this year's freshman team.

THE DUTLDDR ..... A demanding schedule and a young but ambitious

squad face Bill D. Harrell in his second year at the Eagle helm.

Gone are six lettermen but returning is last season's great scoring ace, 6-8 Jim Day. The senior forward averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds a game and was a unanimous All-Ohio Valley Conference selection.

Filling the other forward post will be either 6-6 senior Jerry Hueseman, who averaged 8.8 points a game last year, or husky sophomore Alonzo Cole, who stands 6-8 and weighs 220. Cole averaged 16.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game as he led the Eagle frosh to a 13-5 record.

Manning the center post will be either 6-11 Royce Woolever, a sophomore who did not play last season, or Hueseman, who won the job late last season.

The biggest question mark is at guard. The two experienced lettermen candidates include 6-2 Jerry King, who showed flashes of brilliance last year but is a question mark following off-season knee surgery. Also returning is 6-0 junior Eddie Conley who shoots well and has improved his ball handling and speed.

Expected to provide help at guard are newcomers Ray Wilkerson, a 5-10 junior college transfer, and Gary Cress, a 6-3 junior who came to MSU last year to play base ball.

Three sophomore guards may be hard to keep out of the starting lineup. Moving to the varsity are 6-1 Vic Wharton, 6-3 Ike Unseld and 6-0 Bubba Abell. All are fast and shoot well.

Also on the squad are 6-3 junior Ron Abernathy and 6-5 junior Mike Guiler.

Harrell hopes for an improvement over his surprising 1969-70 record of 13-11.

Morehead State helped organize the OVC in 1948. Today the conference consists of four Kentucky state universities-Western, Eastern, Murray State and Morehead State- and four Tennessee state universitiesEast Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech. The conference maintains offices at Suite 321, 3716 Hillsboro Road, Nashville, Tennessee 37215. The telephone is AC615/291-2400.

THE HEAD COACH .. ...

Bill D. Harrell MSU Head Basketball Coach Bill D. Harrell made

the understatement of the year las t spring when he described his first-year record of 13-11 as only a "great" season. Area sports wnters used " fantastic" and "unbelievable" for the winning mark by a team picked to win as few as , even games.

Harrell fur ther strengthened his debut by recruiting eight players described as "probably the best crop of freshmen in Morehead State's illustrious cage history."

Harrell came to MSU after a two-year stint as assistant coach at the University of Nebraska. Earlier, he had 11 years in high school coaching and compiled an envious record of 244 wins and 82 losses. His Shelby County team won the Kentucky state championship in 1966.

The Pike County, Ky. native has a bachelor's degree from Kentucky Wesleyan and a master's from the University of Kentucky. He began his coaching career at Belfry High School in 1952 and moved to Berea High in 1954. From 1956 to 1960 he was director of campus activities at the Methodist Home in Versailles, and returned to coaching in 1960 at Shelby County.

Harrell is the author of "Championship Tested

Page 9: 1970-71 Basketball Morehead State University

...

7

Offensive and Defensive Basketball Strategy," published in 1967, and he coached the United States All Star team in the 1966 Dapper Dan Classic at Pittsburgh.

THE ASSISTANTS ..... JACK BLACK, Freshman Coach & Varsity Assistant

Jack Black's 1969-70 freshman team produced a 13 - 5 record but the second-year assistant says MSU fans may forget that squad after this year's freshmen are through.

Black came to Morehead State last season after five years at Frankfort High

Black School in Kentucky's capi-tal city where he compiled a 85-41 record , including the school's first Central Kentucky Conference title and conference tournament championship. His teams also won three district titles.

The 30-year-old Black, a topnotch recruiter, also had two years as an assistant coach at FHS and one season as head coach at Franklin County Junior High School. He has a bachelor's degree from Campbellsville College where he lettered three years in basketball and baseball. He has a master's degree from Morehead State.

BOBBY HILES, Seoul & Assistant

Hiles

In his first year on the Eagle staff is Bobby Hiles, a 1970 MSU graduate who co-captained last season's team and led the squad in assists while averaging 11 points per game.

An All Stater at Maysville High School, Hiles transferred to MSU from Kentucky and earned three letters at MSU.

Page 10: 1970-71 Basketball Morehead State University

THE SENIORS .....

Day Hueseman

JIM DAY, 6-8, Forward-Center, Senior, Two Letters, Ashland, Ky.

Eagle fans couldn't believe their eyes and ears last December when forward Jim Day scored 39 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as MSU raced to a stunning, 82-73 win over Florida in the first game of the year. The performance was for real, and Day, who had scored only 20 points the year before, matured in the tough Ohio Valley Conference and won unanimous All-OVC honors after averaging 22 points and 11 rebounds per game. He established single-game team highs during the season of 39 points, 13 field goals, 13 free throws and 20 rebounds.

JERRY HUESEMAN, 6-6, Forward-Center, Senior, Two Lel1ers, Dillsboro, Ind. A healthy Jerry Hueseman is a welcome addition

to the Eagle effor ts this season. The team's other senior, Jerry is a clever, aggressive pivot man with good shooting and rebounding ability. His career has been hampered by numerous illnesses and injuries but the hustling Hoosier appears to have shaken the jinx. Hueseman (pronounced "Hughes-Mun") led the 1969-70 Eagles in field goal percentage.

Page 11: 1970-71 Basketball Morehead State University

THE JUNIORS ... ..

King Conley

JERRY KING, 6-2, Guard, Junior, One Letter, Maysville, Ky.

9

If his off-season knee surgery proves successful, this 6-2 speedster is destined for greatness at Morehead State. Brilliant on offense and defense at times last year, King played with a painful injury and missed six games.

EDDIE CONLEY, 6-0, Guard, Junior, One Letter, Jenkins, Ky. A disappointment in his sophomore season, Conley

apparently is improved this year and may become a regular.

Abernathy Guiler

RON ABERNATHY, 6-3, Forward, Junior, No Letter, LouisviUe, Ky. One of two "walkon" members of the 1970-71

squad, this Male High product may see duty when Coach Harrell needs a quick forward .

MIKE GUILER, 6-5, Forward, Junior, No Letter, Owingsville, Ky. Another non-scholarship performer, Guiler got into

five games last season and did a creditable job. He will be used as a backup forward this year and may play enough to earn a letter.

Page 12: 1970-71 Basketball Morehead State University

10

THE NEWCOMERS .....

Cress Wilkerson

GARY CRESS, 6-3, Forward , Junior, No Letter, Salisbury, N. C. A junior college transfer who came to MSU to play

baseball last year, Cress led the Ohio Valley Conference in hitting. He also played basketball at Gaston Junior College and was recruited for the Eagle hardwood this season.

RAY WILKERSON, 5-10, Guard, Junior, No Leller, Danville, Ky. An All-Stater at Danville before going to Phillips

Junior College in Arkansas, Wilkerson led the PJC Ridgerunners to a 21-8 mark last year as their playmaker. He was recruited by MSU for the same job.

Cole Wharton

ALONZO COLE, 6-8 , Forward-Ccnler, Sophomore, No Letter, Flinl, Mic h. This husky, high-jumping sophomore was named to

the All-OVC freshman team last year after scoring 16.3 per game for the Eagle yearlings.

VIC WHARTON , 6-1, Guard, Sophomore, No Lel1er, River Rouge, Mich. He might be called "Vic the Stick" because of his

slenderness but Wharton's shooting and ball handling made believers out of the freshman oppo ·ition last year .

Page 13: 1970-71 Basketball Morehead State University

Abell Unseld

BUBBA ABELL, 6-0, Guard, Sophomore, No Letter, Lebanon, Ky.

11

George Leonard (Bubba) Abell is a streaky basketball player. He can score, handle the ball and lead the offense expertly at times but sometimes is inconsistent. One of the squad's best shooters, Abell may develop this year in to a regular. He averaged 12 points per game as a freshman.

IKE UNSELD, 6-3, Forward-Guard, Sophomore, No Letter, Louisville, Ky.

Youngest and smallest of Louisville's famed Unseld brothers in basketball, Ike is progressing as a ball handler and shooter. He will see limited action because of his size.

Woolever

b ROYCE WOOLEVER, 6-11, Center, Sophomore, No Letler, Kingston, Ohio

Tallest player tq wear the Blue and Gold of Morehead State University in recent years, Woolever could be the key to another surprising season for the Eagles. The 6-11 , 260-pound pivot man is needed for rebounding and defensive play in a league heavy with good, big men. He sat out last year 's freshman season because of academic problems.

THE FRESHMEN .. ... "Probably the best crop of freshmen in Morehead

State's illustrious basketball history" is how one sports writer described the eight young men signed to grants-in-aid last spring by MSU Head Coach Bill D. Harrell and Assistant Coach Jack Black.

The group- seven Kentuckians and a Hoosierrepresents the first harvest of a full recruiting season for Harrell, now in his second season as Eagle mentor. He signed last season's freshmen in a furious, threeweek talent search after being named head coach in late spring.

"We're confident this year's group is the best material recruited by any college in the state last year," Harrell commented. "It will be a pleasure to coach them, " was Black's observation.

Heading the list are high school All Americans Howard Wallen (6-2) of Johnson Central at guard and Leonard Coulter (6-5) of Danville at forward. Wallen scored 1,700 points in his three-year varsity career and was the team's assist leader. Coulter, sought by hundreds of colleges, averaged 15 points per game as a sophomore, 19.5 as a junior and 22 as a senior.

All Stater Eugene Lyons (6-4) of Johns Creek averaged 28.5 points and hauled down almost 23 rebounds per game as a senior. He is rated an exceptionally good ball handler.

John Stacy (6-7) of Breathitt County, another All Stater, produced 18 points and 15 rebounds per game as a three-year regular in high school. Mark Wenning ( 6-7) of Greensburg, Ind. was an All-Regional selection in Southern Indiana with more than 1,000 points in his varsity career and 13.1 rebounds per game as a senior.

Bill Dotson (6-3) of Hazel Green, a defensive standout who also averaged 14.5 points per game, led his team to a 58-6 record in two seasons as captain and to the state tournament in his senior year. ·Joe Stallworth (6-1) of Danville averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game as Coulter's teammate. Lowell Ashby (6-2) of Shelby County, a jumping jack with averages of 14 rebounds and 17 points as a senior, paced his squad to a state tournament berth as its tallest player.

DAY JOINS ALL-OVC EAGLES The emergence of Jim Day last season as a stand

out basketballer was told in balloting for the All-Ohio Valley Conference team. In a league respected nationally for its basketball talent, the 6-8 product of Ashland Fairview was a unanimous choice for the honor squad.

Day, who scored only 20 points in 10 games a year earlier as a seldom-used sophomore, pumped in 529 points in 24 games for an average of 22 per game. He also pulled down 251 rebounds for 10.5 per game.

Big Jim, a business major, became the 13th MSU cager to win All-OVC honors since the selections began in 1957-58. If selected this season, he would be the sixth Eagle to be named twice.

Eagles Ron Gathright and Bobby Hiles were given honorable mention last season in the All-OVC voting.
