Every indication points to this year's team being as out­standing as was las t year's championship squad. We have arranged for a most challenging schedule - one definitely fitting a champion and one which we ai-e confident will provide many thrilling moments for those who are interested in the athletic fortunes of Morehead State University.

Guy Penny Named "Coach of

the Year" in the Ohio Valley Confer­ence and National Kodak District 4 in 1966, C o a c h Guy Penny has l ed M o r e h e ad State University to its finest football sea­sons with one un­d i s p u t e d OVC c hampi onsh ip (1966) and a share in the title (1962).

Penny teams re-corded three winning seasons in a row, some­thing no previous Morehead coach had ac­complished in over 20 years, and had his finest season in 1966 when the team won seven of nine games.

Winning football led to the dedication of the 10,000-seat Breathitt Sports Center stadium in 1965 to support one of the fastest growing football programs in the conference. A sellout is assured almost every time t he Eagles play. Much of the credit for this new era of football must go to Penny and his dedicated staff.

A firm believer in a solid defense and an imaginative offense, Penny fields teams noted for their rock-ribbed goal line stands and pro-wing-T and flanker attacks. Coupled with a policy of intense desire to win and superb conditioning, Morehead's program is conducted on a high level of achievement.

A native of Alabama, the personable Pen­ny played his college football at the Univer­sity of Mississippi as both a guard and full­back. Coach Johnny Vaught calls him "one of the most outstanding students of the game I have had the pleasure of coaching."

His coaching career began with high school stints in Collinsville, Alabama, and Geneva High School in his home state. He moved into the college ranks as an assistant at Martin Branch of the University of Ten­nessee, and came to Morehead in 1959.

In eight seasons at the Morehead helm, he has guided the Eagles to a 35-34-1 record. H~ will begin his ninth campaign this fall with a sh allow backfield and and ex­perienced line which must face the roughest schedule since he has been at MSU.

The 39-year-old coach is married and has three future Eagle cheerleaders - Debbie, Dee and Diane.

Jerry Denstorff Defensive Line Coach

A strong believer in a tough defense, Coach Penny tapped Denstorff to take over the duties last year of coach­ing the defensive line. Much of the season's s uccess can be traced to the fine stands put up by the linemen under his tutelage. Denstorff moved to the defensive line post after two year s as offensive backfield coach.

Denstorff was a highly s uccessful coach at 1\1.itchell (Indiana) High School before coming to Morehead. His team had a 14-1 record in his final two years and was 8-0 in his last season.

A graduate of Evansville College, he play­ed football at both Evansville and Louisiana State University. He had previously s tarred as a fullback at Rockport (Indiana) High School.

Denstorff also serves as tennis coach dur­ing the spring-. He is married and t he father of two young sons.

Jack Harbaugh Def. Backfield Coach

In his first season at More­head, Harbaugh will coach the defensive backfield. He re­places Bill Bowers who re­turned to an Ohio high school coaching position.

The 1961 graduate of Bowl­ing Green University had three years of successful high

school coaching at Eaton and Xenia, Ohio. His 1966 Xenia team had a 9-1-1 record.

Harbaugh earned two letters each in foot­ball and baseball with the Falcons. He was a member of the 1959 national small college championship team at Bowling Green. He made three pass interceptions in a game against Delaware University. After gradu­ation with a B.S. in physical education he played briefly with the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League before joining the coaching ranks in 1961.

He is married to the former Jackie Cipiti of Cleveland, Ohio, and they have two sons, John (4) and Jim (3).

Ron Durby Offensive Line Coach This will be Durby's sec­

ond season as offensive line coach.

Before coming to More­head he coached at Walker County High School, J asper, Alabama, which had a 7-2-1 record in his final year.

Durby is a 1964 graduate of the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the All-Southeastern Confer­ence academic team, and a third team selec­tion at tackle. He was also the recipient of the Jimmy Moore academic award presented to the athlete with the highest academic achievement . He was a standout at Tread­well High School in Memphis, Tenn.

Durby is married and has one son .

Mike Brown Offensive Backfield Coach Beginning his second year

on the Eagle coaching staff is Mike Brown, a 1963 Morehead graduate, who will take charge of the offensive back­field.

Brown was captain of the .. "'-"ft 1962 Morehead team which ~ :; .... ., tied for the Ohio Valley Con-ference championship. He was the OVC de­fensive back of t he year, and All-OVC selec­tion and was awarded three letters. He re­ceived the Sigma Delta award as the out­standing physical education student of his senior year. He starr ed in high school at Logan, Ohio.

On graduation, Brown served as a gradu­ate assistant at the University of Tennessee before accepting an assistant coaching job at Orrville, Ohio.

Tom King-ery Asst. Line & Fr. Coach Moving up from his position

last year as a graduate as­sistant, Kingery will become assistant line coach and freshman coach with the 1967 Eagles.

Kingery came to Morehead in 1966 after five years of high school coaching. He

spent three years as football assistant and track coach at Paul Blazer High School in Ashland.

A native of Madison, W. Va., Kingery is a 1961 graduate of Marshall University. He is married to the former Ann Meadows of Huntington.

1967 Outlook

Morehead State University will field a speedy and experienced first team, but may find a lack of overall depth to be a problem, in defense of its f irst undisputed Ohio Valley Conference football championship.

Coach Guy Penny will have a capab le vet­eran at every position with 20 lettermen returning from the 1966 title team.

The Eagles' speed is epitomized by half­back Tommy Gray, an All-OVC performer and the league's leading scorer last year . Probably the nation's fastest collegiate foot­ball player, Gray has been clocked at 9.3 sec­onds in the 100-yard dash. He was t he Eagles' leading rusher with 598 yards on 92 can·ies, and ran 10 kickoffs back for 304 yards.

Running in the backfield with him is an­other sprinter, Leon Wesley, who was the team's busiest rusher last year. The speedy halfback carried 114 times and picked up 428 yards. The power is furnished by fuJl­back Otto Gsell (4.8 yards on 50 carries) and quarterback Tommy Eads is rated by Coach Penny as a good field general. The only other experienced backs are Mike Mincey and Bill Marston.

Morehead will have a strong line with sea­soned veterans at all positions. Several will be called on to play both offense and defense. Heading t he cast are Paul Conner, Jim Ross, Marvin Hicks, Gary McKinney, Terry Hoff­man, Bill Wamsley, Dave Haverdick, Bill Baldridge, David Moore and Jim Fisher.

Conner was an OVC first team selection last year. Baldr idge was named to the sec­ond team and Hicks and Wesley received honorable mention in the league.

Six members of the 1966 championship team were lost by graduation. Among them were All-OVC linebacker Gary Virden, quar­terback Larry Chinn, halfback Scotty Red­dick, end George Adams, center Lloyd Cum­mings, guard Fred Conroy and tackle Cole Proctor. Chinn and Reddick were selected on t he OVC second team, and Adams and Con­roy were given honorable mention ratings.
