H istoric Jayne Stadium is the home to the Eagle football and soccer programs and in 2009 MSU will be playing its home games on newly installed artificial turf. General Sports Venue of Rochester, Mich., installed new Astroturf GameDay Grass during the summer, replacing the aging surface. The facility also features refurbished locker rooms for soccer and houses the football coaching staff offices.

The facility, constructed in 1964, also features a state-of-the-art electronic scoreboard in the

South end zone. The field is named after donors Terry and Susan Jacobs who supplied the funds for the artificial surface and scoreboard.

The press box structure can seat up to 20 media members including radio booths for the home and visiting teams. The second level houses the Presidents Suite.

In the Northwest corner of the facility is the Phil Simms Weight Training Room, a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center funded by former Eagle and New York Giant star quar-terback Phil Simms.

Ballard is a former head football coach at Union College and assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at MSU.

In his 15 seasons, he has taken an MSU program in transition and ravaged by transfers following the departure of the previous coaching staff and led the Eagles to the four championships and to a school-record nine wins on two occasions. His 20-year career record is 122-101-1 and his MSU record is 87-76.

In addition to his PFL South Division Coach of the Year honors, he has been a National Coach of the Year (1998) for NCAA Division I-AA (FCS) Mid-Major schools and Coach of the Year among NCAA Division I-AA Independents. John Gilliam, a former standout Eagle line-backer, is in his 16th season on the staff at Morehead State University.

The native of Prestonsburg, Ky., currently serves as associate head coach, defensive coordi-nator and linebackers coach and makes all the defensive calls. In the last several years, his defen-sive units have been recognized as some of the

most ferocious and feared in all of the Division I championship subdivision (FCS).

His 2007 Eagle defensive unit led the FCS in rushing defense, and defensive back David Hyland, a two-time mid-major All-American, led the nation in interceptions per game. The 2008 unit finished sixth nationally among all FCS schools in rushing defense and eighth nationally in total defense.

Gilliam was a four-year Eagle letterman (1983-86) during current Eagle Head Coach Matt Bal-lards tenure as defensive coordinator on the MSU staff. After serving as a student assistant coach for the Eagles in 1987, he joined Ballard at Union Col-lege. He spent six seasons under Ballard at Union and returned to MSU with Ballard in 1994.

Gilliam has coached a number of defensive standouts during his tenure at MSU. Earning All-America honors under Gilliam have been line-backer Zac Prewitt, defensive back Charles Byrd, defensive lineman Chris Parker, linebacker Craig Unger and defensive back Kwesi Williams. Twen-ty-five Eagles have been named to the All-Pioneer Football League teams over the past six seasons.

Statistically, Byrd led all of NCAA Division

I-AA in passes defended in 2003. Current senior linebacker Wes McDermott led the PFL in tackles and tackles-for-loss in 2008 and set the MSU single season record for tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Gilliam earned a bachelors degree from MSU in 1987. He added a masters degree from Union in 1990.

He is married to the former Melissa Childs of Fairfield, Ohio. They have a daughter, Caitlin Nicole, and two sons, Austin William and Mason Clark.

In addition to his coordinator duties, he is in charge of the Eagle offensive linemen and assists with special teams.

The Eagle offense under Dunn won national statistical championships in scoring offense and total offense in 2000, and the Eagles have con-sistently ranked among the nations leaders in those categories throughout Dunns tenure. The 2005 Eagles ranked 12th in total offense among all NCAA Division I-AA schools (116 teams ranked), averaging 432.9 yards per game. MSU was seventh nationally rushing, averaging 256.5 yards per game. The Eagles averaged 33.9 points per game, 18th best in Division I-AA.

In his years as offensive coordinator, quar-terback David Dinkins and offensive linemen Jason Fights and Grant Jennings have earned All-America honors. Twenty-one Eagle offensive standouts have been named to the All-Pioneer Football League First Team. Quarterbacks David Caudill and Brian Yost have been named South Division Offensive Player of the Year.

Dunn was a four-year starter and an all-con-

Chris Garner is in his sixth season as an assistant football coach at Morehead State University.

Garner, a former assistant coach at Cumber-land College and at the University of Findlay, will again coach the Eagle defensive line and serve as strength and conditioning coordinator.

Garners defensive line unit has been one of the toughest in the PFL. In 2008, Derik Steiner and Andrew Doan earned all-conference honors and the Eagles ranked sixth in the nation in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision in rushing defense.

Garner played at Aiken High School in Cin-cinnati, Ohio, where he earned all-city honors as an offensive and defensive lineman.

He was a four-year letterwinner and a three-year starter at Findlay, where he earned all-conference honors.

During Garners collegiate playing career, Findlay posted a four-year record of 36-9-2 and advanced to the NAIA playoffs each season. The 1995 squad finished 10-1-2 and won the NAIA National Championship. During his senior sea-son in 1996, Findlay won its first 12 games before losing in the national semifinals.

Following his playing career, Garner spent four years on the Findlay coaching staff, assisting one season with the defensive line and three sea-sons with the tight ends and tackles.

From Findlay, he joined the staff at Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) and

spent two years coaching the defensive line. He holds a bachelors degree from Findlay and
