HEAD COACH Tom Lichtenberg

Following a 5-4-1 record in his opening season, one that saw his Eagles post a 3-2-1 record in the Ohio Valley Conference, Tom Lichtenberg is enthusiastic about the progress of his program.

" We had some good athletes last season , and a lot of them have graduated . But we have had two good recruiting years, and I am looking forward to what the future has to offer. "

During the 1972 and 1973 seasons, Lichtenberg served as an MSU assistant under Roy Terry. After a five-year tenure at Iowa State he returned to assume the football coaching duties last season.

The 39-year-old is a graduate of the University of Louisville and has previously had head coaching positions at William Mason High School in Mason , Ohio, and at Purcell High School in Cincinnati.

During his five seasons at Iowa State he served in various capacities, including offensive coordinator for the Big-S's representative to the Hall of Fame Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.

" I wouldn't have come back here if I didn't have a love for Morehead State University. I know the people here want a football program, and when you want a football program, you want a winner. They didn't hire me to lose."

Lichtenberg feels that the energy of the coaching staff has been a tremendous plus.

" I've never been outworked by anyone. We" II probably make a few mistakes along the way, but we' ll work hard to correct them. With the cooperation we are going to get, we might be on top of things sooner than people think."

2

Page 5: Morehead State University Football 1980

Lichtenberg was encouraged by his second spring practice at MSU.

" I feel we are a much more solid football team than at this point last season. Our fundamentals are much stronger, and we have experienced players and depth at a lot of key positions. "

Lichtenberg is enthusiastic about the Ohio Valley Conference.

" It's really tough each week to go up against the likes of Eastern and Western and Tennessee Tech. People don't realize how tough the OVC is. With the addition of Akron and Youngstown , the league will be even stronger."

The Eagle field boss, active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is married to the former Sue Ann Reding of Mayfield. They have five children.

THE EAGLES

by Mark Maynard, Sports Writer Ashland Daily Independent , Ashland , Ky.

Morehead State University Head Football Coach Tom Lichtllnberg's first season at the MSU helm had to be satisfying.

Inheriting a 2-6-2 squad, Lichtenberg 's Eagles compiled a 5-4-1 mark, good enough for th ird place in the Ohio Valley Conference and equaling MSU's highest league finish since the 1966 championship squad.

How can the Eagles follow the success of 1979? MSU will depend on 31 returning lettermen, several other returnees, and a talented crop of freshmen to provide answers to that question.

For the second consecutive year, the first question that must be asked is " Who's the quarterback?"

Sophomore Don Reeves (6-3, 175) appears the top choice as signal caller, based on a solid spring performance and game experience from last season.

Backing up Reeves will be sophomore Jeff Richards (6-1 , 194) and junior Doug Joiner (5-11 , 168).

The offensive line looks to be a team strength, with size and experience returning at every position. Four or five starters return, headed by senior tackle Charl ie Young (6-6, 255), an AII-OVC performer.

Other returnees include junior guard Mike Ealey (6-2, 241), junior center Keith Watts (6-2, 219) , junior guard Tony Cardwell (6-2, 242) and senior tackle Davey Locke (6-2, 228).

Depth wi ll be provided by the likes of sophomore Dean Copeland (6-2, 220), sophomore Rich Zureich (6-4, 249), sophomore Ray Yates (6-3, 251) and junior Tony Payne (6-6, 273).

Running back also looks both talented and deep as veterans return to fill the ranks.

At fullback, junior Alan Mitchell (6-0, 195) appears to have an edge, but junior Dwight Yarn (6-0, 185), converted from tailback in the spring , should see considerable playing time.

Senior Dorron Hunter (5-8, 185), a legitimate game breaker, has been moved to tailback from wide receiver, positions he alternated last year.

12

Page 15: Morehead State University Football 1980

Backing up Hunter is junior Marcus Johnson (5-1 0, 190), a runner who had impressive freshman stat istics but was slowed by injuries last year.

Wide receiver appears to be biggest o ffensive quest ion mark , as sophomore Todd Curkendall (6-3, 192) will battle junior Bo Chambers (6-1, 174) for the starting flanker position, while sophomore Robert King (6-1, 161) appears to have the edge at split end.

Tight end should be a strength, as senior Tim Devine (6-3, 195) returns. But sophomore Steve Pytel (6-5, 230) could crack the starting lineup.

Defensive losses could be far more critical for the Eagles, as both starting linebackers, two of three down linemen, and f ree safety are gone.

Key among defensive returnees is senior tackle Tim Brewer (6-3, 245), a second-team AII-OVC selection last season. Filling the other tackle slot should be sophomore Tim Duff (6-4, 251), with sophomore Chris Casterline (6-3, 235) , j un ior Bob Whitman (6-5, 250) and sophomore Ken Imhoff (6-4, 230) provid ing back-up strength.

Starters return at both defensive end positions, with sophomore Ken Alexander (6-1, 195) and senior Marc Kessler (6-4, 219) in contro l. Reserve strength shou ld come from sophomore Mike Puthoff (6-2, 193).

With no returnees at nose tackle, junior Ron Hardee (6-0, 235) , a converted linebacker, appears to have the edge.

At linebacker, senior Gary Carmichael (6-1, 197) should get a start ing nod , with senior transfer Rob Smith (6-4, 228) and sophomore Dan Gooch (6-0, 203) battling for the other spot.

Cornerback appears to be solid , as both starters return. Sophomore Bil l Vogt (5-9 , 177) and jun ior Carey Reid (5-11 , 180) should repeat as starters.

Junior Ken Hopkins (6-4, 192), a quarterback last season, will return to the free safety position, a spot he played his freshman year. The strong safety nod should go to sophomore Jimmie You ng (6-0, 179).

Veterans return at both kicking positions, with John Christopher (6-2, 180) handling the punting chores and Nick Rapier (5-11 , 181), doing the placements.

With only eight seniors on the squad , the Eagles should improve rapidly as the season goes along.

OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE

In 1948 five schools - Morehead State, Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Murray State, and Louisville - withdrew from the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) and were joined by Evansville in forming the original membership for the Ohio Valley Conference. They were joined shortly thereafter by Tennessee Tech and Marshall.

The membership has changed over the years. Middle Tennessee joined the league in 1952, East Tennessee in 1957 and Austin Peay in 1962. Louisville became an independent in 1949 and Marshall and Evansville departed in 1952.

Most recently, East Tennessee withdrew, being replaced by the University of Akron and Youngstown State.

In 1955 the National Collegiate Athletic Association formally recognized the OVC as a major basketball conference , giving the league's champion an automatic bid to the post-season NCAA Tournament. At the time, the OVC was only the second six-team conference to obtain major status from the NCAA.

For many years the OVC has been represented in the nation's top holiday and post-season basketball tournaments. The league has also won recognition for its football program, having had representatives in such post-season classics for college division teams as the Refrigerator Bowl, the Tangerine Bowl and the Grantland Rice Bowl.

OVC champions have also been prominent in national minor sports tournaments in recent years, evidencing the strength of its programs in baseball, track, golf, tennis and cross country.

James Delany, former NCAA investigator and a graduate of the University of North Carolina, is the league commissioner.

Delany, who operates the conference office in Nashville, Tenn. , is the fourth commissioner in the OVC's 32-year history.

THE UNIVERSITY ~

:i\ ~ : .

Growth-in quality and quantity-is the continuing theme at Morehead State University.

From a teacher's college I ittle known outside Kentucky, MSU has evolved into a regional university reaching out to serve Kentucky, Appalachia and the nation.

Morehead State stands today on a 500-acre campus in the foothills of Daniel Boone National Forest. With enrollment at more than 7,000, and 900 faculty and staff members, MSU features a 50-structure skyline dominated by the two tallest occupied structures in Eastern Kentucky, 19-story Cartmell Hall and 16-story Mignon Tower.

Academically, the University's six schools-Social Sciences, Education, Applied Sciences and Technology, Humanities, Sciences and Mathematics, and Business and Economics-offer 145 programs of study from the associate degree through a joint doctoral degree.

Administratively , the University operates under a 10-member Board of Regents with eight citizens appointed by the governor of Kentucky and two seats held by elected faculty and student representatives who hold full voting rights. The administrative structure consists primarily of tour bureaus-academic affairs, fiscal affairs, university and regional services and student affairs.

Dr. Morris L. Norfleet, who took office Jan. 1, 1977, is MSU's eighth president. A graduate of Purdue University and the University of Kentucky, he joined the faculty and administrative staff in 1962 as director of student teaching.

Athletically , the University sponsors a full program of intercollegiate sports for men and women conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Ohio Valley Conference, National Collegiate Athletic Association , the Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate Conference and the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. The University's athletic facilities include a 10,000-seat stadium with an eight-lane oval track, a 5,000-seat gymnasium, a nine-hole golf course, a 1,200-seat indoor track, an indoor swimming pool, 14 all-weather tennis courts, a 1,200-seat baseball park and a lighted soccer field.

40

THE ADMINISTRATION

MSU's eighth chief executive has been a member of the university' s faculty and staff for more than 18 years, including the last six months of 1976 as acting president.

Before moving into the president's office permanently, he served eight years as vice president for research and development.

The Pulaski County (Ky.) native was appointed to the presidency by unanimous vote of the Board of Regents.

G. E. (Sonny) Moran Director of Athletics

The foundation for any structure must be strong for the structure to withstand the elements. That's the way athletics at Morehead State University is built on the strong principles of Athletic Director Sonny Moran.

The 53-year-old Moran came to MSU in 1974 from the head basketball coaching position at West Virginia University. He served on the Mountaineer staff for nine seasons, the last five as head coach.

Moran began his coaching career in 1950 at Chamberlain Junior High School in Charleston, W. Va. After serving as head basketball coach and coaching numerous other sports at Elkview and Stonewall Jackson high schools, he became head coach and athletic director at Morris Harvey College in Charleston.

He posted a 148-74 career coaching record at Morris Harvey from 1957 through 1965 before moving to WVU. He posted a 205-141 college coaching record and a 274-156 total career record.

His Morris Harvey teams won two WVIAC basketball championships and participated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national tournament in Kansas City in 1962 and 1964. THE STADIUM

Jayne Stadium, the lighted 10,000-seat home of the Eagles, was constructed in 1964 to replace the 3,500-seat facility which formerly stood on the site of the Laughlin Health Bu ilding.

An eight-lane grasstex running track surrounds the Bermuda grass playing field. The quarter-mile oval was inaugurated in the spring of 1965 as the site of the OVC Spring Championships. The OVC meet returned to MSU In 1973 and 1980.

Dressing rooms, concession areas, restrooms, the football offices, a conference room and equipment storage rooms are located beneath the west grandstand. Additional dressing rooms, concession and restroom facilities are under the east grandstand.

Fans are admitted through five gates, all on the west side, and public parking is permitted south and west of the stadium. A restricted parking lot for University officials and guests is located in the stadium's northwest corner.

Atop the west grandstand is a three-tiered press box which provides facilities for up to 30 writers and statisticians, five radio stations and four film crews.

THE NICKNAME

It was in the fall of 1926 when J. M. Clayton, a Morehead bus inessman, announced he would sponsor a contest to select a nickname for the athletic teams at the town's new state college.

Miss Peaches Ellis, now Mrs. Jack Cecil of Morehead, su bmitted " Bald Eagles" as a name suggestion and won the $1 0 first prize.

" Bald Eagles" was used for a few years but it eventually gave way to just " Eagles" for the sake of convenience.

A painting of the Morehead State University Bald Eagle was commissioned in 1970 and more than $30,000 worth of prints have been sold to finance scholarships.

A popular attraction at home football and basketball games is the " MSU Fighting Eagle," a man-sized mascot resplendent in a colorful and detailed costume.
